OT: Brent Balbinot

Good for him! I always thought of him as kind of the 'next man in' for Iowa football or men's basketball, though. I enjoy listening to him and hope to see him back as a Hawk sometime in the future.

Iowa needs to up its radio voice post-Dolph, not lower it. Balbinot, while a strongly supportive voice for the Hawkeyes, just doesn't fit the mold. Talks WAY too much (often answers his own question before giving the interviewee a chance to speak!) with an annoying tone besides. Balbinot would not be an upgrade over Dolph, who is more event host than sports announcer. Without Eddy at his side, his football play by play would nearly unintelligible.

What makes you think Iowa will make the right choice in choosing the successor to Dolphin?

If they put up with the inferior broadcast talent in Dolphin all these years, I have little expectations for who they choose as Dolphin's successor.

I am guessing Balbinot went to Toledo for the football lay-by-play experience primarily so he can come back to Iowa and take over for Dolphin when he retires.

Couldn't stand to listen to the guy. Such a mealy mouth, the guy just wouldn't shut up. Just brutal on the podcasts. Remember 'Good Call'? Glad he's gone. Nothing personal but I hope I never have to hear him again.

He talks a lot (too much?) But when he's actually describing a play, he's better than Dolphin

The guy doing Minnesota (forget his name), will be a candidate when Dolph is done. That will be wierd when that happens. Love him or dislike him, he is such a huge part of the Iowa gameday experience for me for both BB and FB and it will be interesting hearing another voice in that place.

Balbinot will be a candidate as well. He would drop the Toledo job in a second to take the Voice of The Hawkeyes for Learfield.

I found Balbinot an annoying flap-jaw and hard to listen to. I hope he's reached his Peter Principle at Toledo and stays a long time. Good luck to him.

No, I sense a conspiracy! Campbell is from Toledo. Balbinot is now going to Toledo, so that when ISU play by play retires he will take over there. You read it first here!

If that's the case it will need to happen in the next 4 years.

To me it's always seemed like either Mike Grimm or Balbinot will be Dolphin's replacement. With all due respect, it will take many very little time to get past Dolphin once he retires.

Grimm has gained tremendous experience In Minnesota with the Gophers and is clearly the very best out there with any sort of Iowa ties. Is Iowa even an option anymore for him? I think he really has enjoyed his time in MN and his wife is from there too.

Balbinot needs more experience. I like his basketball play-by-play as he's clearly already a huge leap above Dolphin. The football play-by-play is where he lacks experience and he'll start getting that at Toledo.

I am really hoping Rob Brooks is not in the mix for either job one day. Just a low energy guy compared to the other two but he's got the tight Iowa connection and that means a lot for good or for bad.

Mike Grimm. He was down in St. Louis after he left Iowa. Tried to work at the station that attempted to replace KMOX to cover Blues games. That experiment went poorly, so up to Gopher-Land he went. Grimm is good.

I always thought it'd be neat to hear Bob Brooks call a game
Well, I like Brooksie, but if you ever get to see the Ohio St. game with the Hartlieb to Cook pass...It was not televised so when you see it, it has Brooksie's radio call over the video and you wouldn't even know it was an exciting play. His voice sounds dead.

Jim Zabel's call, on the other hand, was crazy.......sounds like he was going to jump out of our radio.

I did not enjoy him as an on air personality. Pontificate is the word that comes to mind. I have not heard him do pbp. The guy has obviously worked hard for this so congrats and best of luck to him.

He was on a radio show in ic for awhile and couldn't hack it. He was better than the other guy but both had video game type knowledge of football.
