OT: ISU's Naz Long out for the season w/ hip injuries

This is a big loss for Iowa State. I hope he has a speedy and full recovery. I've heard from people who have met him personally that he seems like a really good dude.

This was much needed as hasn't been good this year. This will definitely hurt a little but as long as Hallice keeps improving like he has been ISU should be fine.
I wonder how the NCAA look at this red shirt, as he was playing, and didn't reinjure the hip. Yet Iowa state played him for a third of the season, until they could get Burton back.

Ouch. As much as I jab at the Cyclones, I never wanna see a player get hurt as I do like to see all 3/4 programs do well

Also it appears from comments its his decision to shut it down. Not a medical professionals. Interesting.

My nephew had his young daughters at a women's game last year and were getting autographs from the lady's team after the game. They spotted Naz down the hall talking on his cell phone as he was waiting for his girlfriend. The two girls approached him and Naz told the person on the phone he had to go. He then talked to the girls and signed their posters. My nephew told him he didn't need to hang up, and Naz responded that it would have been rude not to. I was there and witnessed the whole thing. He really left an impression on me. I don't think I'm a bad guy, but he certainly displayed more class than me in that simple act.

There's no telling what the NCAA will do, of course. But he meets all the requirements pretty clearly. The fact that he tried to come back from his injury and wasn't able to do so shouldn't work against him. And there's no benefit to the school or to him to keep him out of action the rest of this year if he actually were healthy enough to play -- just the opposite. If he could play, it would be huge for both him and the team to keep him out there.

If I were an NCAA person making the rulings, I'd be a lot more skeptical of the request for a medical hardship for Ernst.

That's a good story. I like to hear stuff like that. I know he, Niang, and someone else visited my mother's school a few weeks ago and Naz made a very good impression on her. And she's a pretty good judge of character. She didn't think as highly of Niang, though. Lol. And yes, she's a Cyclone fan. Graduated from Iowa State a loooooooooong time ago.

It was however, beneficial for the school to play him the first 8 games while burton was out though. If I'm not mistaken, I thought the redshirt would be approved if the medical doctors deemed him unable to play, not if he's not as effective, which seems to be Isus stance here as well. It was interesting listening to Randy Peterson and chris Williams tonight say that they thought this was the plan all along for him, and that they aren't surprised. Weird to manipulate the system this way to get extra games out of a guy. Tough break for Isu this year though, it'll be interesting if he gets it.

Naz has always seemed like a very classy guy in interviews, that story just helps to confirm it. Best of luck Naz, hope you recover fully.

My daughter or I neither one remember which game it was but in a recent game Naz was in a collision and limped away after the incident so he might have caused some damage. I'm sure he wanted to do all he could to play with his fellow seniors this year which probably was not in the best interest of his health. I don't believe he or any player would have played these first 8 games because the team was short on eligible players because there is no guarantee the NCAA will allow him a red shirt.

Naz does a lot of good things off the court, too apparently He recently was named to the short list of All State NABC Good Works Team. The article says, this distinguished award shines a spotlight on a select group of student-athletes who have shown dedication to service in their communities.

I'm sure he will continue his good works but probably will become ineligible for this season as it is just for student athletes.

He doesn't have to be deemed unable to play...Ellingson was granted a RS for last season and he readily admitted to the press he was 100% in February but they elected not to play him.

Didn't Ellingson reinjure it though, and that's why he got the red shirt? I can't remember his sequence of events. I thought he hurt it in the summer, then reinjured it during the beginning of the season. I guess Iowa State could make the case that Naz reinjured it.

I think their wording was there was a "setback" during his recovery. I am sure it doesn't take much to get that season anymore as long as they meet the # of games and when they played portions of the requirements.

The kid from Michigan just retired from basketball for the same reasons. Naz had major surgery and has really never been right this year it's pretty much a no-brainer. He's played in less than the 30% cut off and it's pretty obvious a kid on the number five team in the country isnt going to quit for the hell of it. The NCAA certainly could screw it up but they seem to be pretty good with medicals.

well hopefully for the kid, he can recover, and make some sort of career out of it.

It's the NCAA. Don't expect a logical decision. There seems to be way rhyme or reason to many of their decisions.

An opportunity for Thomas to step up, and a 50/50 chance for another year for him next year when he could be a star.

It will hurt with overall bench play-- and still leave them with 7 players.

But their larger problem is not playing hard each game.

That will burn them like last year if not corrected.

The talent is still there.

I'm shocked to hear he's a good man off the court.

On the court, he struck me as a punk. Always pulling his jersey up after he makes a big shot, talking smack, etc.

I guess my impressions of watching him are not who he truly is. It is good to hear he's a nice person too. I hate to see players get injured and have to miss the games.

He's Canadian, so maybe that has something to do with it....eh?

It wouldn't make any sense for Naz to make up a "re injury" so that he could sit out the rest of the season and play the following season. Everyone knows that this is a much better team than ISU will put on the floor next year. Naz is a nice player but he won't be able to elevate the 2016-17 team much higher than a borderline NCAA team (at best).

Yeah, I think this team is, by far, his best chance to win a NCAA Tournament. Obviously I don't know what kind of pain he is in, but he has been playing and averaging 32 minutes a game. Maybe he ought to dial it back somewhat and see if he improves over the next month before making the decision.

Think longer term.

Any move such as this one without absolute certainty is a risk. Looks as if he is either really hurting physically or he and his advisors (coaching staff, family, others) have decided it is best for him to forego the remainder of this season, come back as completely fit and healthy as possible and play all of 2016-17 with hopes for beyond.

The question is how could a player put in 38 minutes into a game like the match up with Iowa and then state an inability to continue? Unlike the case with the Michigan player (Albrecht) whose minutes on the court were severely limited, Long was able to log significant playing time thus far this year.

One 'idea' is that Long was just one in a line of quality players on the isu squad this season. With possible hopes of someday playing in the NBA, he listened to not only medical personnel but also to Steve Prohm who can claim to have experience with guards going on to play professionally. Sizing the opportunities today (this year) versus following next season, it may have been clear to those most impacted that Long wait out the year and focus all energy on making 2016-17 his season to shine.

He hasn't been playing up to par, though, especially his shooting.
