OT: Scott Frost going to ruin a star QB?

I gotta give props to Adrian Martinez as a true freshman playing his first college game. He is everything as advertised. Sure, he will make some mistakes and Colorado has an okay defense for a PAC -12 club, so AM showed he belongs. But Scott Frost may ruin the kid with the brutal part of Nebraska's schedule coming in the next 5 weeks. Michigan's defense is still one of the best, Wisconsin's can be mean and stout, and don't sleep on Northwestern. Those are also away games so crowd noise adds to Nebraska's problems. I see three loses at those games for Little Nebby. Wonder if a bounty is put out on the QBs? How much pounding can a young QB take? Nebby's OL is still weaker than Iowa or Nebraska.

Martinez is their leading rusher. Greg Bell is next. Take out Martinez's game from Nebraska's plan and good defense can stop much of Nebraska's rushing offensive game. Martinez's protection looked very spotty. If Frost throw the young man into the lion's den without much help, Martinez could be very banged up before the month of October is over. What is that going to say to recruits about Scott Frost's player management. Win now and worry about the player's health later? My 2 cents.

It always seemed to me that it would've been smarter to start the guy who transferred and hand over reigns to AM next year. Simply because AM is not that removed from prior injury and is a true freshman. In any case, SF still has the option to play him for 4 games and still keep 4 years eligibility remaining. Should not be that big a deal.

Absolutely the best looking QB I've seen this season though. Great find for nebby.

I think most sane people (so only a small percentage of the Nebraska fan base) knew there would be a lot of growing pains in Year 1 of the Frosty era. I admittedly didn't watch much of the Nebraska/Colorado game, but the parts I did see it seemed like there was a level of grit and toughness in that Nebraska defense you hadn't seen in a while. They showed signs at least. In short, I think Nebraska is already improved despite the loss.

I'm not sure what you are getting at with the player management comments. Most kids love the opportunity as freshmen to come in and showcase their skill set. This is football. Injuries are going to happen. If a prospective quarterback doesn't like the system Frost runs, obviously he should pick another school.

Regardless, I think there has been a lot of foolish talk surrounding Frost. The most logical guess, and that's all anyone can posit at this time, is that Frost SEEMS to be a competent coach and should improve Nebraska (of course after MR that isn't saying much). However, it ain't easy winning in the B1G Ten, as Harbaugh and Fleck have found out. Frost and Nebraskahave a long road ahead of them and the simple truth is Nebraska is very unlikely to return to their glory days of the 1990s.

Yes, unrealistic expectations. And that's the fundamental problem with the Nebraska fan base. If Frost doesn't take them to the Promised Land in the next 2-3 years, they're going to completely lose their poop.

They will give Frost five years because he is the chosen one from the Osborne era. He will get a leash others have not. He is the messiah that will return them to the domination of 90's Osbrone glory years. Just ask them, they'll tell you.

If he does have success expect the 90's to look like a picnic with how unbearable their fans will be.

I agree with you. I was talking about the fan base. The administration will give him a longer leash, you're right.

The simple reality is Nebraska has put all their chips on Frost. If things don't pan out, they are really screwed. Not too many proven coaches are going to want to follow SF and deal with the Nebraska fan base.

Thing is, that is a conversation Nebraska fans will not have or refuse to have. They refuse to believe he wont win multiple titles. Maybe he will be great? I don't know.

I believe the QB transfer (Noah Vendel NE native) must sit out this year from UCF move. Vendel might be the starter next year if Frost allows the abuse of his heralded QB to continue.

If Purdue beat Nebby at Lincoln, Frost won't have to worry about reschedule an Akron game as Nebby won't be bowl eligible.

And I believe he was referring to the QB who transferred out (not sure of his name).

Running an injured CJ Beathard doesn’t seem to have hurt Iowa’s reputation. Besides this, it’s obvious the op is lame concern trolling. Frost has very few QBs to choose from and has to play one of them. Your questions are framed in a way that seems oblivious to logic and college football knowledge in general.

Most of the fan base is hoping for 6 wins, thinking it’s dependent on some luck and finding a winnable replacement for the Akron game. Most of what I hear is that they want these kids to buy in, fight hard and be well coached. I live in Lincoln and that’s my take.

We’re not as delusional as you’d like to believe. We understand that there will be no miracles in a season ranked 6th in the nation for strength of schedule. What do Husker fans really want to see? Movement in a good direction. I’m sure most of us would take Iowa’s unsexy defensive competence, very nice big upsets and the consistent competitiveness of the last several years.

We've been hearing how great Nebraska football is going to be after their latest coaching hire for almost two decades now.

They always believe they are one coach away from a national championship. Always.

Well stated. Most Nebraska fans who post here sing a much different tune, however.

Iowa State fans are more tolerable on here than the vast majority of Husker fans.

Teams who use their dual-threat quarterbacks to run a lot often get them hurt a lot, so I think eventually Martinez will settle in more as a passer and less as a runner. It's either that or nebby better develop a second quarterback who can play. I've always had the view that when a quarterback runs, you give him a hell of a lick to make him consider not running the next time, and making the opposing team's coach hesitant to let him run.

Also well put, but do Husker fans on here EVER actually predict even Conference titles, much less National ones? My observations indicate that they are pulled in to obvious troll jobs, like this OP, but are fairly level headed- even if irritating while pointing out the significant embarrassing moments of the Hawks last 4 or 5 years.

Bo had 7 years. They've only jobbed Solich IMO. Solich was solid. They had to get rid of MR. We're in a different situation than 95% of college football programs. We've had two great coaches in 40 years and we stick by them when they have a truly awful season here or there knowing that things will look up again under their leadership.

I was encouraged in what I saw out of Nebraska on Saturday. There already seems to be a better energy with the players. I think they will win a game or two that they weren’t expecting to win. I bet they make a Bowl this year.

The way Nebraska recruits, there is no reason a good coach like Frost can’t bring them to a level of Wisconsin or Michigan State in a fairly short time. It will be good for the B1G.

I watched most of the Nebraska/Colorado game before the Iowa game started. The QB looks like a really good athlete and had some good throws for a true freshman. But they ran him way too much with option plays and just straight QB draw. No way a QB like that makes it through a schedule of teams like Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Bosa and Ohio State without getting injured. It is hard enough took keep someone like Stanley healthy with only passing about 12 times a game and standing in there like a statue let alone running 10 QB draws with him a game.

And to the earlier Debby poster who said Nebraska fans aren't delusional. I've seen multiple times on the Nebraska board realistic expectations for Frost would be getting into the B1G championship game every other year and a shot at the national title every 4 years or so.....The Nebraska fan base is the most delusional fan base I have ever seen. Take a note on Wisconsin. They keep their mouth closed and just beat you down and win games.

And I'd be more scared of SF and his "system" if he were getting top talent at Nebraska. They get good talent, not great like Ohio State or places like Oregon used to. I would have been more worried if they put a huge emphasis on OL play and defense instead of recruiting the "4 star" guys that couldn't go to Ohio State.

Adrian Martinez is like a shiny new push mower than Frost and Co. sent into the pasture for Bush Hog duty.

You fired 3 coaches that were no worse than 9 win seasons...now you are saying "iowa" succes would be nice???

Didn't the Husker backup transfer out after fall camp? Maybe not a good decision. Only one snap from being the starter.

I understand why he did, not much of a future there, especially next year, so he saved a year of eligibility by leaving.

Nebraska's hay days were spent running the QB more than that. You seem to think the Big 10 plays tougher than anyone else but yet we seem to lack the hardware as a conference to back that statement up. Its nothing more than an excuses to make yourself feel better.
As for the delusional thread you referred to, I read that post also, it was one individual that made that statement. One person doesn't make a fanbase; but hey, spin it however you need to make it work for you.

Seriously boss? Solich, Pelini, Riley all won 9 games. Please don't come to the Iowa board.
The poster said nothing worse than nine.... Riley did not achieve that standard, not even close. Please work on reading comprehension and I will post where I please. Thanks

I've heard the "good for Big 10" comment about if Nebraska gets to respectability, but I ask why? I think it's really "good for the B10" if Iowa replaces Wisky as the dominant West division team and Nebby languishes middle of the pack.
