There was a time where I believed the WAC and Mt. West needed to combine into a conference that could really compete in the west. While these schools would have been interesting choices in the early 2000s but this would just save the Pac12 as a G5 team.

Concurred. Nobody would consider them a power conference, even with these additions. The next round of their already paltry media rights will coincide with what the other conferences make outside of the B1G and SEC. Wazzu and OSU are simply trying to mitigate the financial loss as much as possible because once their current media rights are over, they're toast. Especially when they'll have to pay players directly from their own accounts to try and keep up.

What other options do they have in all honesty.

Might as well. Bring in 10 teams. Let New Mexico join CUSA and let Hawaii stop pretending to be an FBS school.
