Steveson beat Tanner Hall 3-1
From Intermat. Assuming it's the ASU feed.
Heavyweight would bring the match that everyone wanted to see. The consensus top freshman in the country, Minnesota's Gable Steveson, and sixth-ranked Arizona State All American Tanner Hall. This match delivered on all accounts. Steveson generally controlled the action from neutral and very nearly had a first period takedown on the edge. However, with no replay available, the first period ended scoreless. The two wrestlers would trade escapes in the following periods, but neither was able to secure a takedown. In overtime, Steveson would jack Hall up and go for a trip on the edge of the mat. As Hall went to the mat, he appeared to put a whizzer in but Steveson was awarded the two points. Again, with no review, the call would stand, despite the protests from the Arizona State coaches. Neither Steveson or Hall looked pleased to have the match decided in controversial fashion. The Arizona State coaching staff continued to plead their case after the match, but there was nothing that could be done.

We may have to wait until next year to see those two go at it again. The announcer for today's SDSU-ASU dual stated that it is rumored Hall is going to redshirt.

Nice day for Matt Findlay.

That is a top-15 lineup boys!

You may just be joking around, but honestly, Chase Straw is the only guy in that lineup right there that has no chance of cracking the top 20 rankings and at the weight he just so happens to wrestle at is weight class where their #2 recruit in the country happens to wrestle at.

Put David Carr into the lineup over Straw and I believe it is a top 15 team by the end of the season.

I'll bite... ISU will be a decent dual team with their lineup. So you can qualify your prediction from that perspective.

But that lineup won't score 30 points at Nationals. In a perfect storm... they could crack the top 20. But seldom does everything go right . I'll give an example... Sans is high on Coleman. But Coleman is a freshman. Coleman could have a decent regular season record... say 28-10. I'll be extremely surprised to see him score more than 1 point at NCAAs.

JMO.

He's not. He believes it.

It takes about 35 points to crack the top 15. That lineup is full of 0-2 point scorers. They might get into the top 20. Might. A lot of season left of course but early returns don't show that Carr is a big NCAA point scorer.

FWIW, given they scored 3 points at the NCAAs last season, top 20 would be a solid improvement.

FWIW, given they scored 3 points at the NCAAs last season, top 20 would be a solid improvement.
Their 3 points return with sophomore Deagan, but they also added a proven point scorer in Willie Miklus. He is already been an All American 3 times and is ranked as high as 3rd in the country as of right now. I know he took some ugly losses last year, but he was struggling mentally after finding out about his father's diagnosis. He righted the ship and still AA's by tournament time. Between those two, that could easily be 20 team points,

Carr dropping an early match means nothing. Look at Hall's Freshmen season or Lee's for that matter. Freshmen have a steep learning curve. Carr is elite and would be an AA threat right away if they let him wrestle.

Gomez could be a dynamic point scorer as well, but his weight class is brutal and he is not nearly as elite of an athlete as Carr. So, I'll reserve any predictions on him until later in the season after he faces some of the real competition for those AA spots at 133.

Colbray will be interesting to watch at 184. You have seen how dropping down has helped Ca$h. Lets see how Colbray does. Obviously his early results have not been as positive as Ca$h's, but lets see how they look after a month of results.

Iowa State will be significantly improved and certainly more interesting to watch.

Degen/Miklus could also be 10 team points...or less. They combined for 8.5 last year.

That said, I don't have any major disagreement with your individual points, but I'm just not sure I see the 35ish points required to get into the top 20, especially with Carr redshirting.

In my mind, they will be better. 20th or so is the ceiling for them at this time, however.

Comparing Carr's loss to Mark Hall's or Spencer's is a non starter. Hall dominated in those opens except for the loss and a 6-3 win early. In his first 19 matches, all of which were unattached, he went 18-1 with 15 bonus point victories. His regular decs include Crutchmer and and Casey Kent.He majored Jordan Rodgers and pinned Ryan Preisch. His losses were to a seasoned vet in Brucki (and eventual NCAA qualifier) and a returning AA in Carver to Meyer, and an OT loss to Bo Jordan.

Spencer loses to a seasoned guy (but dominated everybody else prior) who eventually AA'd and of course, NATO.

Carr lost to a fellow freshman and has had close matches with guys who will not start for their teams or are lower tier: Renaldo Rodriguez Spencer 2-0, Peyton Robb 6-3, Keegan Shaw 6-3, Paden Moore 3-1. He has bonused 4/10 matches to include a solid win over Moody.

Now, does all of this mean that Carr is a bust? Hell no. But I watched all of last weekends matches and he doesn't pass the eyeball test for this year...it would be a big gamble. He isn't strong enough to hang with the top guys at 157 yet and it shows...got to legs plenty but has a tough time finishing. He is too lean to cut down to 149. Give him a year to physically develop and then he will be a solid threat.

Between the two, I was more impressed with Brands and not just because I am a homer. Brands is a 157 guy wrestling up at 65...most every guy he wrestled was bigger than him but he handled them and was even able to put on solid rides. But that was just a one weekend glance.

I actually agree with this completely and I agree they are not in the top 20 for me either without Carr in the lineup. but they are WAY better than the laughing stock of a lineup they put out there last year in February. They have basically improved every single weight class. Dresser is showing some progress and dare I say some promise.
