@SPOONER From another source. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Friday night will go down as the biggest day in Bellarmine University wrestling program history. The Knights hosted perennial powerhouse No. 2 Iowa in Knights Hall, welcoming a record setting 2,285 Bellarmine fans.

Well 2,285 fans. Grace and Beatty made it clear that there was some Hawkeye Gear in attendance. Plus Tom was throwing out t-shirts and hats, so he probably converted another dozen fans.

OREM, Utah – The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team cruised to a 38-6 victory over Utah Valley in the first dual of David Taylor's head coaching career Friday night at the UCCU Center.

The Cowboys won eight of 10 matches while earning bonus points six times, including four straight to open the dual and build a substantial 21-0 advantage. The performance also gave Oklahoma State its ninth consecutive win in season openers and highest point total in a road dual since December 17, 2021, when it beat Air Force by a score of 45-0.

"Tonight was a lot of fun," Taylor said of his first win. "Utah Valley provided a really good wrestling environment, and our guys got challenged in some unique ways. It's good to get challenged early so we can figure out how to make some adjustments. I was really happy with the way the guys wrestled."

With the dual starting at 174 pounds, Dean Hamiti Jr. had a dominant Cowboy debut against Mark Takara, picking up a 20-5 technical fall in 5:30. Hamiti's first takedown came less than 20 seconds into the match as he scored four first-period takedowns wn route to the victory. Dustin Plott followed suit at 184 pounds, ending his match against Caleb Uhlenhopp in 6:43 by technical fall, 20-4. Now back-to-back in the lineup, Hamiti and Plott combined for a 73% bonus rate last season.

Luke Surber and Wyatt Hendrickson kept the momentum going at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, as Surber pinned Kael Bennie midway through the third period and Hendrickson exploded for a 24-7 technical fall behind five takedowns. Oklahoma State did not secure bonus points in four straight matches in any dual last season.

At 125 pounds, Troy Spratley scored five third-period points to grit out a 5-3 win over Bridger Ricks and extend OSU's lead to 24 heading into intermission. Coming out of the break, 133-pounder Reece Witcraft then recorded his second career pin in dual competition as he put Kase Mauger on his back late in the second period and mathematically clinched the dual for the Cowboys.

In his first official action since the 2023 NCAA Championships, Carter Young methodically strung together eight takedowns for a 25-9 technical fall against Q'Veli Quintanilla. He entered the night having just one technical fall for his career, which came at the Southern Scuffle two seasons ago. Teague Travis gave OSU its final win of the night at 157 pounds, securing an escape, takedown and riding time in the third period to beat Ryker Fullmer, 5-1.

True freshman Kolter Burton cracked the lineup at 141 pounds for his first career dual start, while Michigan transfer Cameron Amine also made his Cowboy debut in a tight overtime loss to sixth-ranked Terrell Barraclough.

The Cowboys continue west for their dual at No. 24 Oregon State on Sunday, which is set for 4 p.m. CT and can be streamed on FloWrestling.org.

Probably a good kid, just not a high level D-1 guy.

Most of the WSR guys have struggled in college outside of Stiert(sp) at UNI and I might be missing someone else.
The Ballwegs certainly did at Iowa. Riggins could always get to the legs, but couldn't finish.
I'm sure Dresser was hoping he could gleam some stuff of what is happening inside the Iowa room taking Riggins.
Thanks Mitch. We had always thought his underperformance was wrestling at a higher weight at Iowa but maybe the skill set just isn't there, he is still struggling to finish the single legs. He did win the wrestle off at ISU so there's that. Watched his match last night, he just doesn't look happy being a Cyclone out on the mat. I wonder if were going to put PK or Nelson out there against him, either should win fairly easily.

Is it just some coincidence that ISU is in so much disarray with injuries and weight cuts that their lineup looks like dogshit right now?

WTF were they doing, or not doing, in the off-season to be in this position?
Not to read too much into it this early in their careers, but the Naak Bros sure don't seem like D-1 guys...Bigger one got beat by Riggins and little one is just easy to dislike and getting pummeled.

I don’t know, man. One of our local geniuses here told us 650 yesterday. Seems like he knows better. So I’m going to go with that.

Do you send out Christmas cards. I would love to see something from you with the Christmas spirit involved. :) But seriously, if you are joking - you are hilarious and I love your sense of humor. If you are serious, you may be a big A$$h0le.
Either way, I always look forward to your posts.

'Cats Dominate in Home Debut, Down NIU 29-8

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wrestling opened dual season in dominant fashion Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena, taking down the NIU Huskies (0-1) by a final score of 29-8 to improve to 1-0 on the season. The 'Cats won eight of ten bouts en route to the team victory, led by Dedrick Navarro's upset of No. 27 Blake West at 125 lbs.

Following a scoreless first period, West jumped out to the match's first lead with an escape and a takedown in the second. A stalling warning early in the third got Navarro on the board, and from there, he was able to get a takedown of his own with a minute to go. West escaped shortly after, but a final effort from Navarro led to a scramble, in which he got the last-second trip to win the match in come-from-behind fashion.

After NIU's Markel Baker got the better of Massey Odiotti at 133 lbs, the 'Cats ran off seven straight wins through the middle of the order. No. 10 Chris Cannon won a 9-3 decision at 141 lbs in his return to Welsh-Ryan Arena. No. 12 Trevor Chumbley (157 lbs) and No. 16 Maxx Mayfield (165 lbs.) also posted victories by decision, while Joseph Martin picked up the first dual meet win of his career at 174 lbs.

Sam Cartella, ranked No. 20 entering Saturday's action, shone in his 2024 debut. Facing off against NIU's Collin Arch, Cartella led from start to finish in a 15-0 technical fall. He collected a takedown in each of the three periods and added an escape, four near-fall points and the riding time point to cruise to victory at 149 lbs.

Jon Halvorsen used a last-second takedown of Spencer Steiner at 184 lbs to secure a major decision, 12-2, in his first action of the year. Afterwards, No. 25 Evan Bates racked up five takedowns on his way to a 19-4 technical fall over Spencer Moobery at 197 lbs.

The 'Cats will continue their homestand next weekend, when they host Little Rock at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The two squads are set to match up at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday, Nov. 24.

After raising the banner on their 2024 NCAA Championship, the Nittany Lions got right back to work on earning their next title as they opened dual meet action against the Drexel Dragons.

Penn State rolled to victory behind a new-look lineup, taking down Drexel 41-3

125: Luke Lilledahl vs N/A

The contest started with a forfeit, meaning Penn State took a 6-0 lead before any action took place.

Even though Lilledahl didn’t compete, Cael Sanderson still spoke highly of him after the match.

“Luke’s been awesome for the program. He always brings a positive energy,” Sanderson said.

Penn State 6, Drexel 0

133: Braeden Davis vs Kyle Waterman

Davis was controlling the early action, leading 3-1 after a takedown in the first minute.

While grappling on the edge in the first minute, Davis got rolled over and began favoring his leg on the mat.

After a pause and a talk with the coaches, Davis continued the match.

The apparent discomfort didn’t affect Davis, as he quickly scored another takedown before letting up a two-point reversal to Waterman.

Both men earned escapes in the next two periods, leading to a two-point difference entering the third period.

The two rolled around, controlling each other's legs for the last 45 seconds, seemingly leading to a 7-5 victory for Braeden Davis, but Drexel coach Matt Azevedo threw the challenge brick, believing Waterman recorded a walkoff takedown.

The call was confirmed and Davis extended the Penn State lead.

Penn State 9, Drexel 0

141: Cael Nasdeo vs Jordan Soriano

Nasdeo took down Soriano early. After riding him across the mat, Nasdeo recorded a 3-point nearfall on the corner closest to the scorers table.

Nasdeo rode out the rest of the first round, but the point was broken quickly in the second round by Soriano. Soriano then evened the score, 8-8, after grabbing Nasdeo’s leg and completing a takedown.

Seconds into Period 3, Soriano broke free of Nasdeo’s grasp and turned around to grab the two-point reversal, then kept Nasdeo down for the remainder of the bout to secure an 11-8 victory

Penn State 9, Drexel 3

149: Connor Pierce vs Dom Findora

Sophomore Connor Pierce had an opportunity to see the lineup after Shayne Van Ness wrestled on Saturday night.

Pierce took the opportunity in stride, delivering a first-round takedown and not letting Findora escape until the next round.

Findora got a takedown in the third to draw even, but the escape returned the lead to Pierce.

The scrap ended with a 40-second scrum that left the Drexel sideline yelling for a takedown that the referees didn’t call, giving Pierce the victory, 5-4.

Penn State 12, Drexel 3

157: Alex Facundo vs Luke Nichter

Facundo circled Nichter for a first-period takedown, but only accrued 11 seconds of riding time.

Facundo then pulled a reversal on Nichter in the second period before being taken down by the Dragons wrestler.

The Essexville, Michigan, native stood up with Nichter on his back and threw him off to complete his second reversal of the period.

Nichter escaped in the third round, but Facundo held him off to secure an 8-6 victory.

Penn State 15, Drexel 3

165: Mitchell Mesenbrink vs Cody Walsh

Mesenbrink lifted Walsh in the opening seconds and slammed him down, later securing the takedown after battling to the edge of the mat.

Mesenbrink knocked Walsh down three more times, leading 12-3 after one period.

The second period opened with Walsh on top of Mesenbrink, leading to a reversal by the Penn State sophomore, who rode out a majority of the period.

Seconds after Walsh escaped, he was back on the ground, giving Mesenbrink a 17-4 lead with a period remaining.

One escape and one more takedown ended the contest early in the third period, with Messenbrink securing the tech fall, 21-4.

Penn State 20, Drexel 3

174: Levi Haines vs Jack Janda

Haines picked up where he left off Saturday night, recording an early takedown and a near fall, leading 9-0 through one period.

The second period saw a continuation as it took just over a minute for Levi Haines to record two more takedowns and secure the Nittany Lions’ second tech fall.

“Two weigh-ins back-to-back, it’s like a tournament setting, so I just wanted to make the most of this opportunity,” Haines said about competing on both days of the weekend.

Penn state 25, Drexel 3

184: Carter Starocci vs Giuseppe Hoose

After a hard-fought victory on Saturday, Starocci looked well in control of Hoose during his first official match at 184.

Three takedowns through two rounds left Starocci in position to hunt for a pinfall in the second round. Staroccie came close to the feat but was whistled for the start of the third before he could complete the action.

Starocci started in the neutral position for round three and quickly finished off Hoose, winning 19-3 for Penn State’s third straight tech fall.

Penn State 30, Drexel 3

197: Lucas Cochran vs Ethan Wilson

Cochran had a chance to earn his keep in a lineup that’s expected to feature Josh Barr as the primary wrestler at 197 pounds.

He came out spirited, securing multiple takedowns and a nearfall to lead 14-1 through the opening period.

Cochran controlled Wilson on the ground for the final minute, prompting a crowd member to shout, “Get Wilson a MyPillow.”

The bout was put to rest at the 3:27 mark with Cochran leading 18-1, resulting in another tech fall finish.

“He’s been really good for a long time," Sanderson said on Cochran. “It’s great to see him have that opportunity and take advantage of it.”

Penn State 35, Drexel 3

HWT: Greg Kerkvliet vs Tanner Updegraff

Kerkvliett put a stamp on the night for the Nittany Lions by securing a pinfall finish in period one.

After his second takedown, the Minnesota native rolled Updegraff on his back, and after a short wait, the referee counted the pin and Rec Hall began to empty with Penn State victorious.

Final: Penn State 41, Drexel 3

ATHENS, Ohio – On the road for its second dual of the season, Michigan State wrestling took down Ohio on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 22-19. Ohio entered the dual as the No. 25-ranked tournament team in InterMat's rankings.

A win on Sunday helps MSU improve to 2-0 on the season. It's the 24th consecutive non-conference dual victory for the Spartans dating back to 2020. Michigan State will be back in tournament action next weekend heading to West Point, N.Y. for the Black Knight Invitational hosted by Army.

"We always stress how important bonus points are to our guys in duals and that was the difference today," said Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler. "It was great to see Tristan Lujan come away with a pin in his first action of the season."

Bonus points were the difference in the dual despite both teams winning by bonus in four matches. The extra bonus points from Lujan's fall and redshirt freshman Jaden Crumpler's tech fall helped MSU turn the tide in the dual.

Michigan State won each of the first three matches of the afternoon by bonus to build an early 15-0 lead over the Bobcats. Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand earned his first dual win of the season by major decision over Malachi O'Leary to put the Spartans ahead early. Weiand looked to have O'Leary pinned late in the second period, but still earned the major decision.

Lujan finished off a fall of his own at 133 however, pinning Mason Brugh to earn the fourth win by fall of his career. At 141, Crumpler picked up his first career dual victory and did it in tech fall fashion to give MSU a commanding 15-0 advantage.

Ohio got on the board with back-to-back major decisions at 149 and 157 pounds as freshman Brodie Dominique made his Spartan dual debut at 149.

Redshirt senior DJ Shannon earned his win of the season by major decision, 16-3, over Jack Lledo to get MSU back in the win column and push its lead to 19-8 after intermission.

After a pair of Bobcat wins at 174 and 184, redshirt freshman Remy Cotton once again secured the win for Michigan State in a dual this season with his 5-1 decision at 197. Cotton rode out the entire third period to defeat Austin Starr. His win gave the Spartans a 22-15 lead to lock up the dual victory.

bellarmine beat Kent st 25-14 to go 1-1 on the weekend.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After a quick turnaround from a bout with No. 2 Iowa on Friday night, the Bellarmine University wrestling team bounced back with a 25-14 win over Kent State on Sunday afternoon in Knights Hall.

With the win, the Knights improve to 1-1 in duals this season while the loss drops the Golden Flashes to a 1-3 record in duals.

In what was all Bellarmine in the beginning, the dual turned out to be a battle to the end as Kent State made a push to topple the Knights.

"Today was a great reflection of the soul of our team," head coach Ned Shuck said of his team's effort. "It wasn't the prettiest of duals, but they clawed and scratched through adversity to get it done."

Starting with the 149 lb. bout, the Golden Eagles took the first lead with a major decision, but Bellarmine quickly jumped them thanks to a pin by redshirt freshman Jeb Prechtel (157). Prechtel win ignited the Knights as senior Cole Nance (165), redshirt sophomore Grant O'Dell (174), redshirt senior Devan Hendricks (184) and redshirt freshman Andrew Liber (197) all won their matchups to put Bellarmine comfortably ahead, 21-4.

Kent State started its run with the heavyweights, taking a decision before winning the 125 lb. bout via major decision followed by another decision at 133 to close the gap to seven at 21-14.

Freshman David Mayora (141) had closing duties for the Knights and did just that, winning the final bout of the dual by major decision to secure the 25-14 victory for Bellarmine.

Up next, the Knights will take some time off before returning to the mat on December 7 at the Cougar Clash in Edwardsville, Il.

"I love how my team continues to focus on the right things. We have some great training time moving forward before our next competition and I'm excited to see how our guys attack where we have been exposed," Shuck added.

I'm pulling for Bellarmine the rest of the year. Schuck had his wrestlers going after it against intimidating Hawks (cept for the 84 who was good at the hokey pokey). Hope they get represented at Nattys.

Who is the one that kept flexing to the crowd right before the whistle. Thought that was interesting. Maybe trying to get a picture flexing on a Hawkeye?
