Seventh-Ranked Gophers Trounce No. 17 South Dakota State, 30-3

MINNEAPOLIS – No. 7 Minnesota (4-0) won nine of the 10 matches, including six ranked bouts, as it trounced No. 17 South Dakota State (1-2) by a score of 30-3 Sunday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings, S.D.

After the last two duals were decided by a combined nine points, Minnesota left little doubt Sunday as it won the first six matches and ended up holding the Jackrabbits to their lowest point total in the series since 1974 (31-2).

Minnesota now leads the all-time series with South Dakota State, 29-5, including 13 straight wins. The 13-match win streak ties for Minnesota's second-longest active streak, along with 13 straight wins over Michigan State. The only streak longer is 19 in a row against North Dakota State. The 29 wins are the Gophers' second most against all non-Big Ten schools, behind only the 33 wins they have against Northern Iowa. In Brookings, the Gophers are 10-1 all-time and have won the past seven meetings there.

Minnesota has also won 10 straight duals dating back to last season. During the current streak, Minnesota has outscored opponents 329-54 and hasn't allowed more than 12 points in any contest.

The tone was set in the first match of the day at 125 pounds as No. 14 Cooper Flynn upset No. 4 Tanner Jordan, 7-2. Both of Flynn's takedowns came in the opening period, giving him a 6-1 lead. After no scoring in the second, Jordan gained a point on Flynn's second stall warning, but riding time improved Flynn to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in duals.

At 133 pounds, No. 8 Tyler Wells and No. 28 Derrick Cardinal met for the third time in the last two seasons. After splitting the two matchups a year ago, Wells took lead in the series with a 10-2 major decision Sunday. After a scoreless first period, Cardinal escaped to lead 1-0 but Wells got a takedown in the final seconds to lead 3-1. The final period was all Wells as he added an escape and two more takedowns to secure his second major decision of the year.

The first non-ranked matchup came at 141 pounds with No. 5 Vance VomBaur topping Julian Tagg, 8-3. Leading 3-2 late in the second period, VomBaur fended off a late attack from Tagg. When action moved to the third period, VomBaur scored a quick takedown of his own to put the match away and get to 8-0 on the season.

No. 21 Drew Roberts needed overtime to defeat Colin Dupill at 149 pounds. Both wrestlers registered escapes in regulation, but it was Roberts who scrambled his way to the winning takedown and a 4-0 mark on the year.

The matchup at 157 pounds saw true freshman Charlie Millard make his dual debut against No. 19 Cobe Siebrecht. The pair had already met earlier this year with Millard scoring a 13-4 major decision at the Daktronics Open. Sunday was more of the same as Millard dominated in a 10-3 decision. Up 3-0 after one period, Millard extended the lead to 9-3 with an escape and later a reversal and takedown, while the riding time point resulted in the final score and sent the Gophers into intermission on top 16-0.

Coming out of the break, No. 11 Andrew Sparks handed No. 25 Drake Rhodes his first loss of the year in an 8-4 decision. Sparks followed a similar pattern in the first and second periods, notching takedowns in the final 20 seconds of each. An escape in the second plus riding time pushed the match score to 19-0.

The Jackrabbits' lone victory came at 174 pounds as No. 3 Cade DeVos posted a 2-0 win over No. 25 Clayton Whiting, behind an escape and riding time. It snapped a streak of 29 straight individual dual match wins for the Gophers dating back to their season opener with Bucknell.

The match of the day came at 184 pounds with No. 9 Max McEnelly meeting fourth-ranked Bennett Berge. Berge was up 3-0 after the first period and had a 5-3 lead going to the final period, but McEnelly got a takedown only to see Berge escape and send the match to overtime at 6-6. After no points were scored in the first overtime session, McEnelly rode out Berge in the second period and then got a late takedown in the next frame to secure the 9-6 win and keep his undefeated record intact at 7-0 this season and 22-0 in his career.

Another top-10 match followed at 197 pounds as seventh-ranked Isaiah Salazar dueled with eighth-ranked Zach Glazier. Scoreless after the first period, Salazar started on top in period two and got Glazier's shoulders to the mat for four nearfall points. After riding out Glazier for all of the second, Salazar started on bottom in the final period and got a reversal. A clasped hands call on Glazier plus riding time gave Salazar the 8-1 decision.

The final match of the day came at heavyweight and top-ranked Gable Steveson made quick work of No. 28 Luke Rasmussen. Steveson needed just 2:25 to post a 19-4 tech fall over Rasmussen, using five takedowns plus four nearfall points after the fourth takedown to improve to 3-0 on the year. It was Steveson's 55th straight win (fourth longest in program history) and improved his record to 88-2 all-time.

Minnesota heads back to tournament action next weekend as it takes part in the Cougar Clash Saturday at SIU-Edwardsville, starting at 10 a.m.

19-2 takedowns for Minnesota this was a beatdown

Iowa guys regressing in the SDSU room.

They ain't getting any better, that's for sure.
I watched it, all 3 Hawks looked god awful. 1 offensive score between the 3 of them which a TD as time expired for Rhodes. Perhaps our coaches aren’t as terrible at their jobs as many on this board would have us believe. Caldwell and Hahn seem to have our guys looking worse this season.

Rhodes was a room guy here, Cobe was suspended and if being honest room guy level and I would favor Salazar over Glazier who was a backup most of his career. These results basically confirm what we already knew about their abilities if being honest and it also confirms our bad recruiting that 2 of the 3 started a season here as basically the only options at the time.

I believe Cobe was the 11 seed at the NCAAs two years ago. I wouldn't call that "room guy" in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps the rest of the season will go better for him.

Rumor floating about potential RS with Bastida if he's eligible for one.

I think he’s eligible. But if it happens I don’t want to hear from Iowa State fans about Nelson’s age anymore. Yonger’s reported age has him only 7 months younger than Nelson. Apply the classic 2 Cuba years and 30 isn’t far off.
