Paid of refs

There were multiple scoring runs in the first half and multiple foul call runs. The first three calls were on Indiana. The next five on Iowa, then it seemed to settle down until the last five minutes. There were four quick calls on Iowa and then three or four on Indiana. We will see what happens in the second half.

Only the gamblers get extra money. The rest just get their regular wage and keeping their jobs. They get to keep their job because, collectively, the Big Ten conference is very happy with the results.

It's not a conspiracy, it's a business model.

I hate to say it but I do wonder if all of our bitching after the Wisconsin game was sitting in the back of certain peoples minds. . . .

Could it have something to do with the tweets from Connor and JBo disparaging the refs after last week's loss to Wisconsin?

I don’t expect Fran or Conner to get a fair shake this year. Vindictive attitude exists before the tip in most games. Shortest leash in the league.

don’t usually say much about the officials but the way the game was officiated tonight we should jave lost by ten or more. credit to this teams toughness.
Reminded me of a game when the Globe Trotters and Washington Bullets played. I thought Indiana brought their own refs in the first half. But at least we won.

I don't buy any conspiracies about payoffs. They're just not competent.
It's not a conspiracy. That is very reductionist thinking.

First, the Big Ten is a commercial enterprise involving hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars.

Second, the Big Ten sells a product. As with football the Big Ten has high profile profit centers. The basketball beloved are the two Michigans, Indiana, Purdue, tOSU and Bucky, who is a newcomer with only 25 or 30 years of Big Ten love. The others have dominated the Big Ten from almost inception.

Third, the Big Ten likes the system that usually keeps those programs at the top because it is very, profitable for the members and, of course, the people. The more money ... THE MORE MONEY! Like all commercial enterprises the Big Ten exists to make more money for its members. The money comes from the blue bloods usually winning and using their market value, and very large media markets to even further the promote the league's stars .

Four or five other teams making the NCAAs is also great, even more money, but long term the Big Ten model is based on those six teams having good records and high seeds. The Big Ten wants four of those six on Saturday in the Big Ten Tournament.

At the same time every Big Ten basketball official knows this list-cuz it has been that way all their lives too. The difference now and 40 years ago is the money. The current Big Ten officials, or enough of them, understand without being told their objective. They know, and expect Sparty, Purdue etc.. will defeat Iowa. They see the game through those lenses only.

The short dark haired white official has been killing us for years. Officials couldn't seriously take any year-end review of their job performance. When that guy gets reviewed tonight's shady ****ery will not come up. He did exactly was expected when he was assigned this game.

The Big Ten knows the guys that gamble. They're very useful. You get a lot of wild results when the thumbs get involved. Larry Scriotto is probably a gambler. You need a wild upset, Larry's doing that Iowa Nebraska game.

It's not all about Iowa, we don't get terrible officiating every game. Even the BBs will get smacked a time or two by the collectively shitty, dishonest and cowardly Big Ten crews. Iowa gets it several times a year in conference, and it is usually impossible to overcome that officiating, although tonight we did. The Big Ten need to keep Iowa to around middle of the pack.

Nothing ever changes, no matter how obscenely or blatantly dishonest some games are officiated. Because that is a business model that works, has worked and will continue to work until NIL makes it mostly pointless for 90% of the teams in this country.

Davis and Lickliter tried the civil, minimize the cheating approach and it just kept getting worse. It would be realistically difficult to do Iowa harder than they're already doing.

What kills institutional corruption? Fresh light. I think McC should come out for every press conference with five -ten minute video showing the particularly bad calls and no calls, like not calling basket interference when the entire watching audience clearly saw the Hoosier tampon hit the rim.

I’m not sure I’ve seen a game recently where one team seemingly got multiple fouls in one possession. My favorite was when Murray and Rebraca got their 4th fouls within 10 seconds of each other.

You gotta give Iowa credit for going into Bloomington, playing 8 on 5 as usual, and coming out with a win.

What's that you say? The game was in IOWA CITY? LOL

For long-time Hawkeye fans, what happened last night has been happening at least since Lute Olson took over at Iowa. The Hawkeyes are one of the few teams in the nation who get the same treatment from the refs at home as they do on the road. Ask any objective observer to watch last night's game, for example, and they would have to admit that the rules changed dramatically depending on which end of the floor the game was being played.

Almost every single one of the calls on Keegan and Rebraca and Josh were no-calls when Indiana did the same or worse. The missed goal tending was literally criminal. You touch the net when the shot is in the air, it's goal tending. When you run your arm up the net and bang the rim, guess what? Yep, goal tending. But not last night. Uh-uh.

You have two choices in reviewing the refs last night, two of whom I don't recall ever seeing before:
(1) These are guys are on the take.
(2) These are guys are totally incompetent.

Well done, Big Ten. For over 50 years, this has been Iowa's lot. So for those who blame it on Fran or Connor or whatever, think again. This isn't some sudden development. Hey, maybe some of you even remember the 3-OT loss to Minnesota back in the Field House days when a phantom foul was called on Mark Gannon 40-feet from the basket with one second left. You can't make this stuff up. You don't have to. It's right there on film.

Ah, BIG life, BIG stage, BIG farce.

So, the B1G's business model is to work together with the officials to cheat? And, since the money the conference gets is distributed equally among teams, they do this for the benefit of everyone in the conference?

And you still watch the games knowing the fix is in?

Interesting ....

Fran has burned every ref bridge there is in the conference and then people wonder why we get worked by the refs. These are humans after all.
Yeah, the refs need to get over that. They're professionals and have a job to do. They should expect to catch shit from the coaches, no different than high school.

Hell my favorite was 5 or 6 years ago with like 15 seconds left. Minnesota was trying to rally late, and there was a chase for a loose ball in the corner. Minnesota forced a tie-up and was awarded the ball. Only one problem…the officials missed that the Minnesota player WAS STANDING OUT OF BOUNDS. Why that play wasn’t reviewable I’ll never know. Minnesota then takes the ball, ties the game and wins in OT. I think it was the same game they shot like 80% or something the last couple of minutes and Iowa went ice cold at the same time.

Catching shit and what Fran does REPEATEDLY are two separate things imo.
Watch other coaches. What Fran does isn’t really that far from Painter, Izzo, etc. but they get away with it and he doesnt.

Have to laugh about basketball now days. I remember BB as a no contact sport that relied on your athletic abilities. It has evolved into hand checking, backing down (running into a person as you back into him pushing him backward to get closer to the basket and grabbing the arm of a player as he dribbles past you. Then there is the Davison way of hooking the arm to pull you down as he falls.
Refs have a very difficult job with the way the game is played. That aside I felt the refs were trying to give Indiana the game last night.

The solution however is actually pretty simple. Hire officials full time, have them study the game in the off-season and don’t tie them to specific areas or conferences.

Still remember Hightower also being a school superintendent for years while simultaneously officiating many of the b10s biggest games.

Need to get back to a no contact mentality. Almost need pads to play the game now days.
To many players injured the way the game is played.

The refs anymore are terrible but I will also say it would take a decent amount of change in my pocket to wanna get into that profession.
I played a lot of sports as a kid and thought being a ref would be a fun way to stay involved. I helped ref a few volunteer gigs and that idea quickly went away. The amount of abuse you take from fans is not worth it. Can’t imagine hearing it from players and coaches non stop as well. It kinda surprises me that refs don’t hand out more technicals.

Can’t agree with any of this. Do you think the game still doesn’t rely on athletic abilities? Go look at the players 40 years ago or 20 years ago. The guys are just bigger and faster. If they called a game like they did in the 60’s and 70’s a defender would have zero chance. The offensive players would get to the hoop at will. I’ll agree I did not think we got the benefit of the calls last night but I also think sometimes it just happens. And I do think there is some Fran fatigue from the refs. Not going to lie.
