Panama Canal

Trump supporters would say this is all just the art of the deal, we will not invade. Other Trump supporters say we will invade. That same supporter will also say will buy it. I am left to wonder what he will do. I guess i am taking him at his word though.
Have no ****ing idea what we are doing. Unfortunately I believe they don’t either.

It's all very very strange. Never once have I thought, "Gulf of Mexico!?" that needs to be "Gulf of America!" The Gulf of Mexico has been called that since the 16th century. The coast line is shared by the United States, Mexico, and several South American countries, with a total coastline of about 4,300 miles. The U.S. portion spans roughly 1,631 miles, making up around 38% of it, so by all means, let's rename it centuries later. Weird.

So if we take it back by military force here is how this is going to go.

We go in and all the Republicans are going to act like this is a great patriotic effort and anyone who doesn't support it hates America and is a traitor.

There will be guerilla attacks on our troops occupying Panama.

Between 5 to 15 years later those same people will tell us they didn't support invading Panama or complain that Trump lied to them while rushing off to vote for the next Republican who will say Trump was stupid and find a different country he wants to invade for a different reason.

I saw this script play out under W. Bush. Same thing will happen here.

Doubt it. Panama will most likely roll over. Mexico is more problematic to me.

You forgot to mention repeated use of the terms “warmonger” and “MIC.”

Can us Milwaukee residents stop letting Michigan thumb its nose at us. Call it Lake Wisconsin or Lake Milwaukee.

What changed in the last four years that we need to take back the Panama canal, revert to Mt. McKinley, and rename the gulf? Why weren't those priorities back in 2016-2020?

It has never been clearer that these guys are in it for themselves, 100%.
I'm becoming very interested in reading history about how we got out of the 1st gilded age. I know the Rockefeller's and the Dupont's pretty much kept their fortunes but we somehow got out of that period and into the progressive era that substantively made the United States what it is now and I realize I have almost no idea how that happened.

Of course all the people that lived through it are long long gone and now that the WW2 generation is gone we're getting Hitler/Mussolini sabre rattling per the US getting it's lebensraum or what the hell ever.

The government of Panama might roll over. But will the people? People who are going to see this as an insult to their sovereignty?

Donald Trump is going to be making sure we have zero allies left. In a sense his isolationist policy will work because we will be isolated by having zero allies.

It's insane. It's a total misinterpretation of what makes us the most powerful nation in the world. Trump is effing not just us but future generations in this country. The Post WW2 world and alliance system the United States created and essentially has administered was absolutely not a weight hanging around our neck but was a main linchpin in our current prosperity and status in the world.

Blowing that all up is potentially blowing up the future of not just us, but future generations. Maybe there's still a chance for us to recover, but this country has now made this nut President twice.

We're doing Russia and China's bidding here, hell completely justifying Russia taking Ukraine and China taking Taiwan and whatever else they want in their self-defined spheres of influence.

Of course you MAGA idiots get that even if "we take it" that the people in the area might not cooperate? I mean, I guess I've been referencing the WW2 generation dying off as a cause of MAGA fascist expansionist rhetoric but pretty much all of us here lived through the Iraq invasion/occupation? Right?

No way I was going to actually watch the inauguration speech but I've read the transcript and he says this:

"My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier. That’s what I want to be, a peacemaker and a unifier", and then just a couple paragraphs later says this:

"And above all, China is operating the Panama Canal, and we didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama. And we’re taking it back."

Fascist gonna fascist with the cognitive dissonance, but still, really.....

His supporters will just tell you that you're not intelligent enough to understand his complex plans.

I've been there twice and have spent a couple of months in Panama. Interesting country and nice place/people in general. There's a skyscraper right on the ocean in Panama City that Trump built. The area west of PC is nicer to spend time in, with the area around David/Boquete being the nicest, imo. Also, was able to see the Caribbean when looking north from one vantage point, then look south and see the Pacific. Pretty narrow there.

Also learned some things about the canal that I had misunderstood for years, based on news reporting back when Carter decided to give it to them. I supported the deal at the time because everything I read or heard about it said 80% of the canal was lakes, so it made sense to me that it be returned because it had always been there. Turns out the lakes were all man-made, created by when we built the canal. I don't think the US taking over the canal zone is feasible, although some Panamanians think it should. Imo, Trump is just angling for reduced fees for our ships and less Chinese influence throughout Panama.

Capitalism is the linchpin of our prosperity, not sending young men to die Vietnam, or Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Somalia, or Libya, or Syria.

If we skipped those wars we'd have saved 10s of thousands of American lives and trillions in treasure.

We're immeasurably better off trading with Vietnam (or any of the others) than dropping bombs on it. If you have an actual argument that suggests we'd be worse off skipping those wars, I'd like to hear it.

Trump sold it years ago, btw. Was originally a hotel, iirc.
So your post was very relevant. How did you not know that the canal was mostly lakes? Again, why doesn't Trump try to get Chinese control out of our domestic ports first? I believe this might be another case of all for show.
