As of right now, I'd guess the starting lineup is Bowen, Perkins, Patrick, Payton and Krikke. Payton will be asked to put on 5-10 lbs of muscle this offseason so he can guard opposing 4s better when they post up (which is fairly rare in modern basketball). If Dembele is ready day 1 maybe Patrick comes off the bench, but I'm guessing this will be the lineup that is rolled out in November barring another addition such as BJ Mack.

Folks forget, but Patrick was Iowa's second leading scorer prior to the 2 games right before the mental health pause. He was IMO the biggest reason Iowa won that Clemson game and he also kept Iowa in the Wisconsin game and forced OT. So in order for him to be a starter, all he has to do is get back to where he was at last November & December. It's his senior year, I'm expecting him to surprise some people.
Being the second leading scorer during those early games certainly was an asset and had to give him confidence going forward. Did that side of his game exceed, break even or fall short with lack of D stops and rebounding on the other end? I don’t know but I’m curious.

Disagree.

The overwhelming majority of open shots come from dribble penetration.

Almost no teams have a consistent post player anymore.

Iowas success will hinge on guard play.

If we're going to be counting on just dribble penetration than we're in trouble. The real answer is, someone has to create a double team so that someone else can be open. I still think we're going to need someone down low that can cause a double team.

Patrick has the quickness of a 4/5 but wants to play the 3.

His face up game might actually work if he would be matched up on bigger slower guys but he's ususlly matched up with guards.
This is the problem that PMac faces. He doesn't have the strength to play the 4/5 and he doesn't have the quickness of a 3 (to be able to consistently drive).

Maybe.

I like the potential of all the guards on next years team.

If Fran can bring himself to play 3 guards (instead of 3 forwards)plus Sandfort at the 4, Krikke at the 5 Iowa should be able to spread the floor and drive effectively.

We have Dix, Perkins, Bowen, and Harding. I'm not sure that's enough firepower to have three of them on the court for long periods of time. It might depend on the combination. Am I wrong to hope that Nimmers might be able to help?

I'm also not sure Sandfort plays big enough to handle the 4. My feeling is we'll see him get two quick fouls and be out for most of the first half. I think we can hide his defense better at the 3 than at the 4. I guess it depends on the team we play.

Patrick does not rebound or play ANY defense. Doesn’t matter though considering who the coach is.. Doesn’t look like he even enjoys playing.

Patrick is pretty good leading the 3/4 court press. To say he doesn’t play ANY defense is simply ignorant, at best.

We see what we want to see, but I can link plenty of videos of Patrick enjoying playing the game if you’d like. I’d guess Patrick loves playing basketball and also loves the Hawks. Probably a lot more than you or I. I’d assume what he doesn’t enjoy is the unfair criticism of him because of his last name.

We'll see. I think this will be the best collection of guards Fran has had by a wide margin.

Bowen is going to be way better than people realize and he will get in the lane and create, Dix is going to be excellent and is around 6'5 , Perkins will only get more consistent, Harding may take a year but is probably the most offensively talented guard Fran has landed.

Nimmers is a mystery, looks like an NBA talent but for some reason wasn't wanted by any big schools. I'm not going to go crazy about him because there has to be weaknesses that we aren't seeing.

Sandfort is like 6'8 or 6'9, the 4 is mostly a perimeter position in todays game. Theres no reason he can't play the 4.

I’m sure I can produce a lot more video of Patrick not playing defense than you can of him playing the point on the press. I probably should have said he plays terrible defense and his father who has the same last name as he does lets him get away with it. Do I need to post his rebounds per game to prove a point that he doesn’t rebound for a guy who is 6’9. Please go back and watch the games after Patrick’s break and tell me again he was enjoying himself. You don’t think there is a lot of pressure on him to continue to play because of his last name . My impression is you have more love for the McCaffery’s than you do for the Hawks or specifically the basketball program.

Patrick needs better handles, to be sure, but folks ignoring his physical talents/skills are either ignorant...or ignoring intentionally.

His problem is in his head - more than 1 way. He needs to be aggressive getting to the boards. Play better D all-around. Yes he has a lot of talent, but just doesn't put in the effort to use it. JMHO

You said ANY defense though. Now you’re changing it because you realize how stupid that comment was. Neat. Keep moving those goalposts.

Your impression(s) continue to be wrong. Not surprising though.

I changed the goal post from any defense to terrible defense. What is that? About an inch!

Lol at this guy foaming at the mouth thinking about the McCafferys.

we can always see if Lick or Alford want to coach again just for you
Sorry, but in year 14 its time to let the "well we could have Lick or Alfraud as head coach" schtick die. Fran is what he is at this point, and saying he's better then the worst D1 coach I've ever seen, (Lick) is not a defense at this point. Fran's teams are always fun to watch on one side of the floor, and disheartening on the other. He does a great job developing stretch 4's, but can't seem to bring his guards to their best efforts. Never thought he got the best out of Joe T. , and Bowen really should have been brought along better last year. If he doesn't make a big jump this year, then we'll struggle. I think Harding could be a good player, but he'll have a real learning curve adjusting to the physical play next year....

like JBO who has a FR recorded 175 assists and 85 made 3's making him just the 2nd PG in the last 25 years to accomplish that feat
then as a SO he recorded 175 plus assists and made 85 plus 3's again. this time he was the only player to accomplish this feat in the previous 25 years.

not bad for a undersized white boy from Iowa who 99.8 percent on here swear up and down is/was NOT a PG. my question has always been since he is/was so slow and unathletic how come none of those super athletic guards could not stop him?

Don't forget Pryce Sandfort. Many feel he is better than his older brother. Only time will tell.
