Petras QB #1 at Utah State?

KOK recruited Petras. Not sure if he also got Joey. But for sure KOK brought in Spencer.

Is there a site that lists recruits and their primary recruiter ? Cause i don’t recall many recruits being associated with Brian. Both as the OL / RB coordinated and OC
A bunch of notable players were recruited by Brian, actually. I think Rivals or 247 has a search function where you can filter players by their lead recruiter.

I think recruiting will arguably be the most difficult for Lester to prove he's better than BF in all coaching facets.

So are you saying Brian was a good recruiter but just a horrible offensive coordinator?!?

If recruiting a number of guys who went on to have good careers at Iowa makes BF a good recruiter, not just of OL either, then yeah, I guess that's what I'm saying. It should also be fairly obvious that "good recruiter" and "horrible offensive coordinator" are hardly contradictory.

According to this article, it's officially his.

Coaches need to do this more often: give two guys equal reps with the ones, assess the spring performance, declare a starter, and let the #2 guy decide his next move.

Thanks for posting, and really interesting article.

I had forgotten, but this will be Petras’ SEVENTH collegiate season (including his medical redshirt last year). He’s going to be 25 years old in the fall. I think that just reinforces, imo, that people shld just really root for him and not read anything into it if he lights it up. He’s a grown man playing against 19/20 year olds at a level below where he’s competed before. Candidly, given that context, he should have a huge season. That does not mean he would have had the same success at a power 5 program under a competent OC. It simply will mean he’s doing what he should achieve at that level.

In 2023 the Big 10 had the 4 best scoring defenses in the nation with Iowa being #4. Excellent defenses impact QBs and the Big 10 has excellent defenses.
I am not sure there is a total correlation between the Big 10 having the top 4 scoring defenses in football as meaning they were all super great unless you also compare the offenses of the big 10 teams in total and the ones that these great defenses played.

We know that any Big 10 team last year that played Iowa got a huge positive bump in their defensive stats. My gosh, Rutgers looked just terrible on offense against Iowa but I am not sure it was all Iowa as Rutgers is not an offensive juggernaut.

Purdue was not their high scoring selves last year.

I do believe that Mich holding down Bama and Wash U is a pretty good indicator of their defense and I think Iowa had a great defense also. OSU's defense sort of crumbled at the end

The guy Petras beat out (Cooper Legas) had a hell of a year last year. Legas’s passing efficiency last year (158.3) was better than Brad Bank’s senior year (157.1).

Apparently Joey Labas accounted for 6 TDs in Central Michigan’s spring game (2 rushing, 4 passing), per Leistikow.

We all know Brian deserved to be fired, and there are a lot of interesting data points to track this year to see exactly how bad the offensive schematic system was.

I would argue Rutgers had an excellent offense but faced the top 4 scoring defenses in the nation and averaged 7.25 PPG against those defenses. They also played the #20 scoring defense in Wisconsin. They played 4 non-conference teams including 2 ACC teams and averaged 38.5 PPG never scoring less than 30.

I'm going to have to disagree with you just a bit. If he does light it up (and I hope he does because he was nothing but a good guy at Iowa) it's simply one more data point (like Charlie Jones was) confirming the ineptitude surrounding Brian and Kirk's offense over the past several years. Spencer getting older wasn't a factor at Iowa where Spencer's numbers looked the same or worse with each passing year. I don't believe anyone has to see him succeed at USU to say that Petras probably would have had significantly more success under a competent P5 offensive staff than he had at Iowa where the staff was a train wreck.

Practice stats. Let us see when we get to the real world.

Utah St coach getting fired...assume Petras' status won't change as they will go with an interim on the staff (the DC) & it's too late to switch any plans for the upcoming year (presumably)...although I do think Petras could transfer out now if he wanted to...

Legas is officially in the portal.

Petras has apparently been looking good in camp and he put on a show at their spring game scrimmage. I suppose they could always bring in someone to compete with him, but it looks like the gig is his to lose now at Utah State.

Anyone with DB Cooper has their avatar....did he survive? Who was he most likely?

Barta being allowed to "retire" was a horrible call. He shoulda been fired after KF gave an interview where he said he wasn't aware he needed to tell the AD before he hired relatives.

Survive? It's close, so I put it at about 51% that he survived, 49% he died. They never found a body (as far as we know) and EVERY parachuting copycat hijacker survived their jump and made it to the ground safely. But, every other hijacker was caught afterwards. Also, the Tena Bar money discovered in 1980 makes me think he landed in the Columbia River (somehow) and died.

My top suspects, in no particular order:

1) Ted Braden - well-known MACV-SOG bada$$ and soldier of fortune. Apparently a lot of his military buddies think he did it.

2) William Gossett l/k/a WolfgangGossett - was a military guy who had gambling problems and at one point confessed to his son that he did it. Later became an obscure radio and TV host and a priest in a breakaway sect of the Catholic church. Also confessed to his attorney that he did it.

3) Barbara Dayton nee Bobby Dayton - first person in Washington state to undergo a sex-change operation in the late 60's. Was a pilot and a skydiver, and a criminal in her military days. Lost her pilot license at one point, but kept flying, so she had a "rules don't matter to me" mindset. Lived in the Vancouver, WA area at the time of the hijacking. Confessed to the hijacking at one point, but later recanted the confession. Stylometry tests have shown letters written to Max Gunther for his D.B. Cooper book (look it up) may have come from her (the testing method is controversial). A lot of people discount Dayton, but she lived in the area at the time of the hijacking, possessed all the skills, and had the ultimate disguise.

4) Loran Eugene "Skip" Hall a/k/a Lorenzo Pascillo - CIA goon/henchman connected to the JFK assassination. He looks the part, maybe more than any one proposed before. He is probably one of the newest suspects, but he ticks a lot of the boxes, and many people think he's the strongest suspects in years. This is probably my current #1.

5) Milton Vordahl - scientist, metallurgist, and inventer living in Eastern Washington at the time of the hijacking. Held very strange anti-social personal and political views, and shared them with letters to the editor of the localpaper. Was laid off from his job at the time of the heist. Was a genius and had the temperament to commit this sort if crime. But he was 58 at the time of the hijacking, which is a bit old based on the FBI profile.

Interesting list - a lot that the big documentaries don't go over. Some suspects there I'm going to have to dive into. Bobby Dayton was the suspect that was always most interesting to me. Really looked like DB before the sex change. Going back to a woman is a pretty good hide.

One thing I was thinking recently is why choose November? Ten more problems arise in a winter month when trying to land. It kind of makes me think he was just a "career criminal, loser" with a little bit of jumping exp. and dumb enough to put this together quickly and think it will work.

None of the money was ever spent or found beyond that by the river. If he lived, he just did it for fun basically. I know I had seen there were traces of some sort of special metal on his tie he left behind. One would think they have looked for any DNA on the tie or anything else he touched.

The money experts say "no way" the money was ever spent due to flagged transaction rules, some would have turned up.

The metal particles evidence is interesting, but it's subject to different interpretations, like all scientific evidence.

The FBI apparently has a partial profile from DNA lifted from the tie, which is not enough to match any one suspect, but it is enough to eliminate suspects. There is talk of having the parachute card and the shroud lines from the chute he cut tested for DNA, but that requires the assistance of the museum holding the packing card and the FBI.

If anyone is looking for more info on DB Cooper, checkout the Cooper Vortex Podcast.

There was an Expedition Unknown episode dedicated to DB Cooper a few years ago. Of course it didn't reveal any crazy theories as to who did it or even why, but it was a pretty cool episode nonetheless.

Speaking of late 1960s/early 1970s American mysteries, any ideas who the Zodiac Killer was? It's of course far from proven but Arthur Lee Allen was supposedly the most likely candidate, but there have been some theories that the Unabomber or BTK was responsible (interesting, but both are very unlikely as killing random people at gunpoint wasn't their MO).

This is all very interesting, but I'm pretty sure Petras wasn't the hijacker or the Zodiac killer. : )
BF hijacked Iowa's offense.

Depending on how Spencer does at Utah State, we'll see if our criticisms were well-earned or if he's just a scapegoat (yes, I'm aware MW competition isn't even B1G West-caliber, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had some success in a different system).

Thought the hbo documentary on it which covers bulk of those you list suspected was much better than the Netflix one last year.

I still believe in his potential. But we'll see, especially with coaching turmoil now in the mix.
