My gym is becoming too crowded for tumorboy. Never had a true commercial gym membership. What are the biggest draw backs of a Planet Fitness type membership. Besides all the Fatty's.

The public is the biggest downside. I was once a member of a gym that was a ghost town after 7pm. It went out of business but it was great while it lasted.

Actually no drawbacks from what I’ve encountered. Not many muscle heads which is nice. Clients of all ages. The hours they are open can accommodate most everyone. I just have the regular membership and go 3 times a week around the same time so I have gotten to know the group that works out during that timeframe.

I’ve belonged to other gyms that were full of roid rage type lifters and that is just too over the top for me.

BTW if you avoid the after 6pm crowd you will normally not encounter crowds.

Well my gym used to be a well kept secret. Then they started to add some attractive young personal trainers. Which was ok for a bit. Then the herd started to move in. It's relatively small as chain gyms go. Now about anytime of day it's busy. Hating it.

I think if your goal is to lift weights and build mass, their equipment is lacking (or so I've read). If your goal is just to do cardio, I think you'd be just fine.

Biggest downside is that they do not have dedicated squat/power racks (they do have smith machines) and they get pissed when you remove the barbell from the bench to deadlift (personal experience with that). Also the one I went to only had dumbbells up to 80, I don't know if that is the same for all PFs or just the one I went to.

Yeah that's not a gym.

Seems pretty Bruce Jenner to me.

No thanks.

You have a local Y? They usually have decent lifting set ups. Also typically not busy.

No power rack, platform or bench press (only smith machine).
Dumbbells only go up to 75 pounds.
Mostly machines.

As long as you are OK with that, there's nothing wrong with Planet Fitness.

I belong as I'm not a big free weights guy.

$10 a month so you don't feel bad for not being there every day --- and since I do a lot of bike riding and other stuff, I typically only make it 2-3 times a week.

I am impressed at how clean and bright they keep things given the relatively high usage rate. And the one in Davenport recently upgraded all its equipment. It isn't a super nice gym, and the clientele can be a little rough-around-the-edges (due to price and being in Davenport, lol) but it's cheap and gets the job done for me.

I will never begrudge or belittle someone for working on their fitness.
Here's the problem bruh. These noobs aren't really working out. Spend more time hovering around a machine , taking long multiple breaks on phones, and then use horrible form. Honestly they'd be better off focused on diet and cardio bikes/treadmills.

Our gym just went to 24 hours access and slashed their "open" staffed hours. Idk if they've lost business or spread out the usage but it's not nearly as crowded at all times now. It's pretty awesome. There's several times over the last month when I was the only person in the building. Csb

As noted, if you're a free weight guy, they're not gonna cut it. Considering that you get the most benefit from free weights, that can be hard to accept.

Biggest drawback I can see is a better chance of running into someone who doesn't know possessive vs plural at a larger gym.

Totally not true. They have plenty of free weights and machines for just this.
Totally true. As noted by others, the dumbbells only go up to 75 pounds and they don’t have power racks. This might work well for some, but not for many.

That's cheap. Figured at least $30/month for a gym membership nowadays.

Must not be very many bells and whistles?
Their business model is to target the typical non-gym goer specifically for that reason - they don't go to the gym, but keep paying the $10 a month.
