Coaching turnover happens every year but this year it seems to be happening at some traditional powers. I have to believe we are back in the ears of some of the St. L guys that were looking at Nebraska. Maybe we reach out to some of the other recruits from these schools? There is something to be said for offering stability to a 18 year old that just had the carpet pulled out from them. When it comes to getting a higher caliber athlete into the program I believe in the no stone left unturned approach. Worst case, you make a.phone call and they say "not interested". What are your thoughts?

I'm sure that is happening. It doesn't mean any recruits will come stampeding to Iowa. Nebraska will have a new coach in place probably by this Sunday or Monday at the latest, so time for the new guy to make connections with the players that were interested in Nebraska before Riley got canned.

For sure dodger. As crazy as it may sound having a small class as of right now might pay off in having space for these guys.

I think if it is a recruit that you have already established a relationship with, why not contact him to tell him the offer is still good should he want to reconsider.

Having a small class right now is a function of having a small number of scholarships available. Coaches are looking at taking 17-18 tops in the Class of 2018, so you're only talking about 3-4 spots left to fill.

If Frost is indeed going to Nebraska it will be announced right after UCF plays in Championship game. I was doubtful at first, but now it is 99.9%.
I could see Tennessee, Texas A&M, Nebby going after Frost. A&M would be hard to turn down as well.

I suspect there will be more than 17-18 scholarships available. I think there will be some defections by guys who know they have been passed over and still want to play.

Apparently, WRs Young, Boyle and Falconer didn’t make the trip to Lincoln (heard that on here somewhere), Joly at RB, Vejvoda at TE, etc. These last 2 may just want to stay on the team and get their degree, idk.

Toks- did he get passed or was it the injury? How happy is Rugamba? Again, I have no inside info, just conjectures.

Would love to see the staff poach a particular forward on the Basketball team, who shall remain nameless.

I think we will see some fallout as well kingpin. It's hard to hate on anyone wanting to be a hawk but there is definitely some "fat" that could be trimmed.

We should poach.
Every year at this time several P5 coaches get fired.
How often does Kirk exploit that?

Its definitily an area of oppurtunity I think. The good news is IMO this staff knows more talent is needed to get to the next level and might be willing to do things previous staff's have not. I'm not suggesting we do anything shady but calling a guy and saying we have an oppurtunity available if you want to talk isn't far fetched. I think it's also worth noting that while there were some misfires/backfires there is a fair amount of tape this staff can walk into a kids home and say "this is what we are trying to do with skill players" that will sell Better than the GD offense.

Another thought - I have been jealous of the size the Cyclones have at WR, imagine getting that unnamed 6’7” basketball player, and the 6’5 Ingoli from Dowling and now you have some size to go with B. Smith, Easley, ISM, Cooper, Tracey from Indiana and maybe the light comes on for Quarrells.

Add that to Fant, Hock and Beyer at TE and the receiving corps looks more like a strength than a weakness. Playmakers, speed and size.

A 3 year starter on Iowa's basketball team decides to drop basketball to instead compete against 8 other roster TEs which includes 2 returning starters? Stranger things have happened I suppose but I can't name one right now.

He would be a WR not TE FWIW

We have most of our verbal commitments coming to Iowa City on December 8th. Along with them, Leonard Taylor, Dallas Cradieth and the JUCO Linebacker are visiting. But no Wagonner. Landing the other 3 would be sweet especially with the easily signing period approaching soon.

Lot's of young DEs ahead of Wagonner...Nelson, AJ, Golston, McKnight, Simon. We will be fine if he doesn't come.

WR Young was in uniform, and believe he played on special teams. Toks was passed by T Young and IKM.

6ft7 240lbs. who is he going to beat out for PT? He played one year HS football IIRC. Iowa WR unit needs an upgrade, I agree, but doubt if he could crack the two-deeps there either.
You are probably right, but there is no way he is going to be able to come in put his hand down and block a DE or OLB effectively....being that this is extremely unlikely it doesn't really matter. However, if I were him I would seriously consider the transition because his basketball career will be over after college and would have a better opportunity in football because of his size and athleticism.

So you agree with me that he probably would not crack the two-deeps on the football team but he should seriously consider quitting his college basketball career (where he has started more than 30 games) for a long-shot chance to play pro football? I confess, it doesn't make any sense to me. A team in the Indoor Football League might give him a shot but the money is peanuts.

definitely should have an edge stealing prospects from a nebby team we destroyed the last 2 years and beat 4 of the past 5.

LOL yeah that didn't make very much sense. What I was trying to convey is that I believe he has more potential and a higher ceiling in football but at this point it might be too late. I love his energy and athleticism in basketball, but is limited due to lack of outside shot and he is a bit a "tweaner" too small to be true post and not enough ball skills to stay out in perimeter. I know he won't make two deeps for TE that is for sure, but I do think there is a role for him in the passing game on the perimeter

Joshua Moore committed to Nebby is a 4Start WR
Cameron Brown " " 3Star WR

on 247sports - Iowa doesn't have a single commit from any of the top 246 listed... yikes! Coaches have to sell our program's lack of WR studs as a chance to come in and be a threat to stretch the field and see PT right away.

Why aren't we putting Shaun Beyer's at the slot to cause a miss-match? 6'6 and runs a 4.7 40. Especially when inside the red zone... Are they trying to beef him up to be a TE? he's a great "flex" player.

I see Steve Wiltfong's new crystal ball prediction for John Waggoner has him going to Iowa State. Of course, all the other crystal ball predictions have him going to Iowa. But I think WIltfong previously had him going to Iowa.

Yes, Iowa should contact players that might be interested. It's not poaching, IMO. If a kid tells you he is solid with his oral commitment, move on. But, if he's listening, make the pitch.

Poaching recruits, is there a season on recruits? I mean if there is no set season on them, how do you poach one?

.

I do NOT agree with you on 2 points. 1) he could be a WR. Stared multiple times by other B-ball players that he had the quickest first step on the team. Someday, he could bulk up even more and over the next 2 years learn how to block. Urban Meyer offered him a full ride as a WR. Good enough for me. I am not saying he would be our “X” WR. He would create mismatches and we could use him like the clones use Lazard and Butler.

2) while he is a starter, he is not getting starter minutes and with the arrival and ascension of Garza and Nunge appears to be getting less minutes this year. His best opportunity to play at the professional level (not counting overseas) is in football, not basketball. If you think otherwise ... well ... that is your opinion. I will stand by mine. One thing is for certain, he is in every bit as good of physical conditioning as any of our WR. He has very good “quick twitch” muscles. His strength would be a tremendous advantage in getting off the line of scrimmage, even in press coverage, where several of our current WRs have issues.

He could be a star. Our coaches can teach him how to block for an eventual career as TE in the league, a la Gates and Graham.

So if another coach swoops in and flips an Iowa verbal that doesn't call his character into question? Good to know next time a SaintKirk debate breaks out.

Contact? Sure. But don't forget, if they aren't an "Iowa fit" - meaning the coaches have already at least kicked the tires on them in the past, thought they'd fit in, but they chose to go elsewhere - I wouldn't get your hopes up on out of the blue types.

Kingpin, we obviously disagree. Its a bad dream.

Even if he took a year off to train, at that point he would still be competing to beat out 2019 third year TE starters Noah Fant (sr.) and TJ Hockenson (jr). To expect him to win a starting position is a fantasy.

With that reality facing him, he would then need to fight 6-7 other TEs for one of a couple back-up spots. Those players include Nate Wieting (sr) Drew Cook (sr), Nate Vejvoda (sr) Shaun Beyer (jr) Jacob Coons (soph), Anthony Torres (class of 2018).

It is unrealistic to believe that Wagner would forego his senior year of BB to fight an uphill battle for a back-up TE spot.

...and now my final point: he doesn't want to play football and he has said so in so many words.

Urban Meyer offered him a full ride as a WR
huh? Ahmad Wagner? you have a valid link for that? Sounds like urban legend (pun intended/not intended).
I'm calling bs.

Is ISU the main competition?
His recruitment has been pretty quiet. The only things I had seen about him before Wiltfong's newest crystal ball prediction was Iowa. He has tOSU, Penn State and others on his list, but only Iowa has been predicted. Wiltfong I think is the best at predicting, I think he is like 88%. He seems to be right more then the other bozo's. LOL
