1 shotgun for hunting. I try to avoid living in places where a firearm would be required for protecting my house.

And yes, I'm convinced SP and TheIowaHawk are the same person. NEat how you started answering yourself in this thread to try and throw everyone off.

I have no doubt these types of things happen, probably hundreds of times/year, but it's a decision I've made to not have guns in the house. You're welcome to, I'm not going to. If I could figure out a way to keep it locked up securely AND have it ready at a moments notice by my bed, loaded and ready for use, I'd consider it. It's just that if the situation you describe were to happen, with my luck, the one time in 3 lifetimes I needed it, it would be locked up on the other side of the house somewhere and would do me no good.

There are individual gun vaults made to solve this very issue. They can hold one hand gun and the ones I use are thumb print activated, So I'm the only one that can open them. I have one in the night stand right by my bed, one in my kitchen pantry and one down stairs in my rec room. That way I have quick and safe access to a fire arm on each level of my home. Within 5 seconds from anywhere in my home I can be locked, loaded and ready to defend myself.

Scheels in Iowa City sells them up stairs in their firearm section.

This may be Chief's gun room...or maybe Charlton Heston's.

I have two old affordable shotguns, plus a 1911 Model 1895 Winchester rifle, a 1895 Nagant revolver and a 1980's Browning HiPower. I have ammo for 3 of them. As you can tell they are mostly of historical interest to me.
Kind of cool - one of the shotguns was older than the seller realized though it still is not a collector's item except to me. It is a Western Field (Montgomery Wards) pump action 16ga from the late 20's to early 30's made by Savage.

I'm jealous of that 1911 Winchester 95. I have a Winchester 95 in .405 but it was made just a couple years ago. Would love to have one from pre WW I.

Chief - You are probably aware of this site but I found mine for a decent price on Gun Broker. It had lost a lot of its bluing but still has the saddle ring.
It was not nearly as expensive (about 7 years ago) as those on there today!
(And I'm jealous of all those military rifles you have.)

Ya, I've used gunbroker.com before. I found both my 1879 Martini-Henry Carbine and my M1899 Krag-Jorgensen from that sight. I'm always very nervous buying any fire arm without putting my hands on it first, but had good luck on gunbroker.

There is no "requirement" in most places.

Not everyone has that flexibility either.

Don't be fooled though. Just because you "feel" like you don't "need" to be able to protect your family, doesn't mean that it isn't a good idea to be prepared.

Weird. I figured I had a pretty distinctive posting style, and even I'm not that big of an Ahole.

I don't live in a mobile home, so my odds are much better right there. The odds of it happening in my demographic area are pretty low. And only 60% of people injured in home invasions were unarmed, meaning having a weapon doesn't improve my odds there very much. Anyway, statistically speaking, the odds are low enough that I don't see the need to invest the time and money in buying and learning to use a weapon. Not to mention I don't worry about my home being invaded; I would worry about kids somehow getting to a weapon I owned, even if it were locked up.
Just wondering if you keep household cleaners/chemicals locked up in a safe? How about prescription medicines you do know more children die from ingesting all of those things than from a carelessly stored firearm.

Got the statistics to support this?

Again, I'm a statistics man. Both are low enough probability that I don't worry. Matches/lighters and an unsecured pool are about the only things that might blip on my radar.

Not to mention, my son is too young to know how to open a medicine bottle on the very rare occasion that there is any in the house. Secondly, I'm not even sure if we have cleaners/chemicals in the house...do the housekeepers bring their own? Maybe someone on my staff buys some to keep around, I dunno.

Not so subtle brag. I like it.

Wonder how close these numbers reflect with the public?

At least there are 4 leftists willing to put stand behind their agenda. Must be hard to put your agenda above your family. Weirdos

Lots of ranges. The Internet should get you something for leads. Any gun shop can point you to one.

Are you serious or is this just an attempt to look like you are down with the cause so you can claim to be a gun owner while preaching against the practice?

What is the general purpose of cars? What is the general purpose of guns? And which serve our population more?

Here is why the cars vs gun debate is actually a good one to have whether you're for gun control, or not.
There are nearly three times as many guns in the US as there are cars. Both are tools. One is a tool of transportation, the other a tool for self defense, hunting and sport. BOTH are used in criminal elements, and both have been used to purposely kill innocent people.

Cars are built to be SAFE, and to give you a chance of survival in the case of an accident. Yet they kill twice as many people as an item that is created to damage it's intended target when used in ANY circumstance. Half over half of all gun related deaths are suicides. So we need to address the mental health issues, and require people who have these issues a tougher path to gun ownership.

85 million people are responsible with their weapons. 11 thousand are not...and 96% of those obtained their weapons illegally.

It's the criminal and mentally unstable elements that make over 99% of the gun owners in this country look bad.
Should you be punished, because .000019% of dentists act unethically while practicing your craft? Should it be harder for YOU....who has done nothing wrong other than to choose to be a dentist........to become a dentist?

I'm asking if you can try various guns at them. Never been, wouldn't know.

Not once have I preached against, don't be a dolt.

Not sure who you are addressing this too......but yes...some gun shops also have ranges in them. You can try out the weapons you are interested in. That way you're to getting into something that is too much for you if it's your first handgun, rifle or shotgun.

This exactly

Kids in the house + guns = no good

I am not opposed to people owning guns, just not for me at this point in my life (and shooting guns is fun but dead kids via an accident is not).

18-1/2" barrel 16 gauge for home defense. Easily swings in the hallway.

It must suck going through life scared all the time.

Where do you live that makes you feel unsafe enough to have a gun next to your bed when you sleep?
I have zero weapons, for the record. Nor do I feel the need to.

I have found stevenpatrick and ping
