I dislike PC and give zero shits about what people say. People get too offended.

Thinking generally: Does it help more than it hurt? Or hurt more than it helps?

Your Vote WILL NOT be public

Come on. Everyone knows it's a joke and has ruined too many things. Respect can be had and delivered without going overboard with PC BS.

I find it interesting that if you google "political correctness" you find scads of links to how bad it is, or lists of PCness getting out of control, and even websites claiming that PCness is "destroying America."

It's also interesting, I think, that early pushback against PCness most often came from people like Bill Maher and George Carlin. Not exactly right-wingers. But these days it's almost entirely the butt-hurt conservatives and the I'm-such-a-victim Christians who are screaming the loudest.

Where political correctness is indisputably a social good, I would argue, is where it decouples people - both as individuals and as a demographic - from the words (and the attitudes associated with those words) that make it easy for us to dehumanize others. As too many episodes throughout history have shown us, once we devalue others, we find it easy to mistreat them, exploit them, ignore their plight, and so on.

It brings attention to groups who want to stir trouble and division...nuff said.
That's true and shames them into backing down and acting humanely. There are a lot of bullies out there that can be neutered with some pointed public shaming. Its a great non government way to make the world better. If cons were honest about their ideology they should welcome the democratic nature of PC speech. Of course its satisfying that they don't too.

Calling someone a "crippled retard" isn't racist. It's uneducated. I didn't really expect you to understand the difference but I applaud you for at least trying to join in the conversation. Trust me when I say that we're laughing at you, not with you.

Thank God our constitution exempts speech from the democratic process.

On a side note, it's surprising that the anything goes crowd that a few years ago defended the artistry of a crucifix in urine has now become so darn sensitive about speech and expression.

So you want the government involved? Weird reply.

Huh? Don't understand how you got that from my post. I stated speech cannot be regulated by the democratic process.
PC is the people making a judgment and convincing you they have a point. Its conservative people power at work. Why hide behind the constitution at all if you aren't looking for some sort of government response?

Political correctness has formally spread into government institutions such as public schools and universities. Janet Napolitano is exhibit "A." It's not strictly people power.

He knows that. People like that love to revel in the lie that this is merely a public choice/participation-optional attitude. If they weren't pushing that lie it might actually work the way they claim they want it to work.

More proof is a governor banning a word from public use. Censorship is so progressive.

What country do you live in? Because that's how people power is supposed to work in America.

You're moving the goal post. First, you criticize my first amendment post because PC is non-government and thus needs not constitutional protection. So I point out instances where PC is public policy and now you jump me because I'm ignoring the obvious fact that "that's how people power works."

This is why people drink!

It's impossible to win when you already raised the white flag with this:
Your achilles heel is showing. Versatile has many definitions depending on the speaker. You're going to have to apply some of that context you hate so much and figure out what I was saying here.

By the way, I don't do Greek, so I don't have an Achilles Heel.
