My son now does not have to deploy unless he chooses. FEMA provides very good deployment pay and living stipends if you are required or choose to hit the field.Yea, it’s amazing at how little Iowans know about FEMA. My family has had a home in Florida (and NC) for some time now and it’s incredible at the logistics involved in such an undertaking. These FEMA folks are away from home for months at a time, something the naysayers aren’t exactly familiar with, along with the massive logistical challenges involved.

The people are pissed off about the funding for the “other entities”.Kinda funny how people say they don't like the IRS because of it's association with taxation.
I guess all these public services like road maintenance, law enforcement, and various other entities funded by tax dollars should exist by charity.
One of the good programs they have are FEMA Reservists. The reservist are only paid if they deploy and can choose if they accept the assignment. When they deploy they get a very good hourly wage.It takes some incentives to get all the people to run into what typically is a chaotic situation, filled with challenges and an emotional populace
FEMA was in our region after Helene the next day and has continued to have a presence.
An out of towner was whining to me the other day about how FEMA was worthless and I told him he was reading the wrong sources.
Another thing that was amazing was the number of aircraft in the skies for many weeks. Cargo planes and choppers, smaller choppers and planes, were on the move 24 hours a day.
Several days after the storm I lost count at 75+ utility trucks coming in from Nova Scotia along a route from the southwest as roads from north, east, west, and south were blocked. Imagine bouncing over 1,500 miles in a utility truck to bring much needed aid to strangers.
The manpower and resources coming in bottled the mind.
Not that FEMA was involved in all efforts, but they were/are a heavy presence. Plenty of private organizations and peeps as well.
