At 197... you could tell by Pharr's reaction that he knew he lost that match. I'm guessing it was a "pity no call" to not give Burak the two.Should have been 40-0
i think it was pretty ez to see when the guy hit him with the towel / they stopped wrestling but I don't think the refs could go with that. It's a coin flip whether Burak had the TD at the end there. However, I'll say that it's absurd in this day and age that they don't have a clock on the video review.
Gilman's the kind of kid that you love if he is on your team and hate him if he isn't.Petry was pissed after getting pinned and when Gilman shook his hand, Thomas held on a little longer than usual almost like he was trying to calm him down.
I took a nap during Cooper's match....
Every single guy on that staff is a Minny alumni. Most every top level staff in the country has some diversity as far as being involved with other programs. Hell... most of the starters tonite are in-State kids. I know that likely changes for them next season, but if there are no coaching changes in the off season, it's pretty hard to see things improving much.Minnesotas entire staff are all dead behind the eyes... If JRob stays or turns that program over to Eggum, Becker, or Schlatter you can schedule the funeral.
My cousin is a school teacher in LeSeur, where Pfarr is from. Her son is a good friend of Pfarr's, and a pleasant young man in his own right. We've talked a little wrestling the last couple of years about his friend, and he just always said what a nice guy he is. Sure seems like it to me hearing him talk and seeing him compete the last couple of years. At 197... you could tell by Pharr's reaction that he knew he lost that match. As an aside... the post match interview with Pharr was very good. Sure seems like a very nice kid. These two guys are very even
Can we all pitch in a few bucks and give the Gopher staff lifetime contracts?
In my biased point of view it was 2. Burak knew it, Pfarr knew it, the Ref's didn't know it.After the call was upheld in Burak's match, both coaching staffs were jawing at each other. Brands put his hands up to his eyes, making the crybaby sign. I thought that was hilarious, but I'm still going to lose sleep tonight over the 197 match.
The entire Pfarr family are phenomenal people. The type of kid u can't help but root for.
Their fan base will go through the same unending discussion until he steps down. FSU fans were lucky in that they ripped the bandaid off after about 4 years or so - even in the face of Bowden's passive-aggressive attitude (fighting the AD and board through his wife and supporters in the press). Penn State got a decade of nepotism, under-performance, excuse-making and such before the Sandusky HBomb dropped. Minnesota has to avoid the stale, wrongheaded argument in that a coach like JRob "deserves to go out on his own terms". Why? He's not doing the job for free. Allowing someone to hold on despite lackluster performance ruins morale and is unfair to the athletes.Every single guy on that staff is a Minny alumni. J reminds me of the wrestling version of Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden in football. Wonderful careers but stayed a few seasons too long.
They almost all looked doughy, unmotivated and/or out of condition. It was atrocious. We all knew the Gophers were bad, but did anyone think they were THIS bad?
I agree. In a "coin flip" situation, the offensive guy should be rewarded. Burak needs to not be in that situation in the first place. Hope lesson learned. It's a coin flip whether Burak had the TD at the end there. However, I'll say that it's absurd in this day and age that they don't have a clock on the video review.

Sammy Brooks' match looked like a Snuff Film. I wanted to turn away, but could not.
I usually read BHGP's running blog. Did not last night. Will have to catch up. Sammy Brooks wrestled pissed. Here's Black Hearts Gold Pants twitter feed with some nice short video clips of Gilman, Clark, and your favorite Snuff Film Actor doing some damage.

And on the Hawkeye twitter feed there is a really great picture of Gilman getting ready to face mush 6 guys at once. Pic is part way down the page.

You are seeing both sides lining up on the battlefield on the Guillotine. Rinse and repeat with the arguments.

Pfarr is good, Burak is good. The match played out about like one would expect, with the winner winning by a point. I suspect any future meetings will be of a similar nature, and a coin flip on who gets their hand raised.Tough loss for Burk, but a silver lining is that is probably won't really affect his B1G tourney seeding much. He'll be a 3 instead of a 2, but his road to the finals will be about the same. I'll look forward to the rematch between these two.
Chickenman, JRob doesn't coach the Gophers any more than Minkle coach's the Spartans. Eggum has been running the team for some time now, similar to Chandler running MICH St for the last several years. Remember that JRob almost died from septic poisoning before having to get another knee replacement. He's now an elder statesman for the sport with little direct contact in the room. Eggum is a wonderful person, but is too mellow and soft-spoken for the job. I think the Gophers have become a reflection of his persona, without his wrestling ability.Their fan base will go through the same unending discussion until he steps down. You look at Pfarrs reaction right at the end of the match and you can see he thought it was a takedown. Oh well.In my biased point of view it was 2. Burak knew it, Pfarr knew it, the Ref's didn't know it.
That said, Burak left it in the hands of the Referee, and he got what he deserved. He did some really good things, as did Pfarr, and when he committed he got there easily. Hopefully he learned a valuable lesson.
My concern is that the Duke? kid passes them both and Pharr/Burak are now fighting for the 3/4 seed rather than the 2/3 seed. Big difference to me. If one beats the PSU kid at B1Gs, then it gets interesting.Tough loss for Burak, but a silver lining is that is probably won't really affect his B1G tourney seeding much. J is the face of the program... whether it's as a symbol or the actual guy calling the shots. When you have the best in-State kids leaving in droves, as has happened for the last five years or so... it's an indication that his status is no big secret.Chickenman, JRob doesn't coach the Gophers any more than Minkle coach's the Spartans. You are WAYYYYY smarter than I am. Your scenario makes a lot more sense than mine did.I think they were currently fighting for 3/4, after McIntosh and Cox. Considering Pfarr has now beat both Hartmann and Burak, he's probably the 3 right now. That leaves Hartmann and Burak at 4/5 in whichever order, which doesn't make a huge difference.
If one of Pfarr/Burak beats McIntosh at B1Gs, however, Cox probably gets the 1 and Hartmann/B1G winner get 2/3 in some order, which I would be ok with.
Noted, but please address the rest of that paragraph!Eggum: 3x AA placing 5th, 2nd (losing to Cael Sanderson), 3rd (losing to Cael Sanderson in semi's). World silver in freestyle 2001.
Meyer looked dang good. Moved his feet. Attacking both sides. Had to re watch his match on BTN replay thanks to the 20 minute line at the Ice Cream Stand. He keeps wrestling like this, I'm not moving from my seat next time.
Also, big fan of Shane Sparks.
Agree 100%. Brody looked to have Thorn in that first scramble and looked to be a heartbeat from putting him on his back, but then he just lost it or got tired. Burak hit the same shot in the 2nd with ease, and then got it in the final seconds. I was sitting next to a small gathering of Gopher fans that were over the top happy about this match outcome. I'm fine with people cheering for the enemy, but a few of them were just ridiculous. Immediately told them that we'll see you at Big Tens, and you better be worried.Brody was a scramble away from winning that match. Was surprised he lost the first scramble when it looked like Thorn was on his back.
Burak needs to come away from this match with even greater confidence. He can take down Pfarr any time, but only if he sets up a shot. He was tentative early on and it cost him.
JRob was walking very slowly last night also. Wondering how his health isMinnesotas entire staff are all dead behind the eyes... If JRob stays or turns that program over to Eggum, Becker, or Schlatter you can schedule the funeral.
