-Offense was absolutely pathetic, putrid, etc... There is no other way to explain it.
-We seemed to not even try anything that worked last week.
-I like the change of pace James Butler brings, but focusing the run game on him will not bring success. ZERO idea why we decided to do that today.
-This offense is most successful when you have 2-3 tight ends and FOCUS your pass game around them.
-Toren Young was a bright spot on offense, even though all his carries were at the very end. They were tough runs.
-#6 ISM has potential on offense, but right now he can't catch and is afraid to get hit. Reminds me a lot of Herb Grigsby.
-Defense played well enough to keep Iowa in the game, but they were gassed at the end going against the Wisconsin ground game all game.
-Josh Jackson is a special player. He will be gone after this year.
-Punt return game continues to struggle. Vandeberg is not himself since the broken foot.
-IKM has speed which I like, but zero vision on kick returns. That is a problem.

At the end of the day there is really zero excuse for the offense. It needs to be a tight end focused pass game with Wadley getting the bulk of the carries/passes out of the back field. Anything else is asking for failure.

Iowa probably goes 1-1 in the final two games. I could see us losing to Purdue or Nebraska. My guess is we lay an egg in Lincoln with another disgraceful offensive performance on the road.

So lets hear it. Those who agree, who disagree (there will be plenty), and other thoughts.

Iowa will not come close to beating Nebraska. The only chance is Purdue next week. This will be the second time Nebraska beats Iowa then fires their coach.

Pretty much spot on, IMO. Iowa has a pretty long tradition of the offense laying an egg on the road. Certainly added to that tradition today.

Sadly, I think you’re right about Jackson. As much as I’d like to see him follow in King’s footsteps and stay for his senior year, I can’t imagine his draft stock will ever be higher. Sure couldn’t blame him for heading to the league.

Are you a Husker fan? Did you watch Nebraska play today?

Nah. As awful as wr were today, I️ could see us pulling that one out. NE isn’t close to the team WI is. We aren’t world beaters, but we very well could win the last 2.

I think Iowa beats both Purdue and Nebraska and I'm uncertain about the bowl game just yet. What is a bigger concern to me right now is 2018. I was willing to give Brian a pass this year and look ahead to the next...but today only added to my lingering doubts about his play calling. It appears he might be even more conservative than his Dad...and that is not a good thing.

All depends on the week of practice Purdue and Nebraska have.

If they have good weeks of practice, we might get beat worse than we did today.

Iowa has two things working for them against Nebraska...
-Ferentz has a bad taste in his mouth due to the Eichorst comments. He has taken it personal.
-If Iowa beats Purdue, Kirk will be coaching for 500K.

Iowa will very probably win the next two. The Hawkeye defense won't let Purdue or Nebraska score too many points, and should create several turnovers.

Iowa's offense is better than either of those defenses. I am curious about what the O works on in the next two games. They could be good for confidence-building and working on some things.

8-4 on the year, 5-4 in the league.

Your first point is the most telling.

Middle of the 3rd quarter and Iowa has their first throw that attempted to stretch the field to Noah Fant. And he was open. And had he made a better effort at catching the ball and went up with two hands it could have easily been a completion.

It was a catch-22. Part of the reason Iowa couldn't throw vertically was because Stanley didn't have time to. Part of the reason Stanley didn't have time to throw (beyond the obvious blocking woes) was Iowa was stuck in too many predictable passing plays, got nothing on the ground, and lacked a lot of the creativity we saw last week.

Plus, part of me wonders if the Iowa players fed off the lack of creativity and aggressiveness from the play calling and played lackluster and uninspired as a result.

The play calling is going to look bad when your offensive line can’t block and your receivers can’t catch, not apologizing for BF, just saying today not really a good day to judge play calling when execution was horrendous.

Perhaps, but will managed less than 100 yards in total yards and zero points by the offense. Wisconsin is a better team than we are this year, but not THAT much better.

I think Iowa's okay against Purdue because the game is within the state of Iowa. I would be chalking up a loss to Nebraska right now if they weren't so pathetic. Iowa MIGHT actually win a B10 road game this year. God forbid next year's schedule has Iowa playing 5 B10 road games.

I also have to ask why the run game went through Butler today? Like I said, I like the change of pace and it's nice to work him in. However, the run game needs to go through Wadley. He is our most explosive player.

We haven't approached a game like this all year from a running aspect, why start now?

Minnesota scored 54 on Nebby today. I think we will close the season with two wins.

After watching the Nebraska black skirt defense against Minnesota, I find it hard to believe that Iowa has much trouble scoring against the bugeaters.

The part of play calling I question in hindsight is it never felt like we had an identity in terms of what we were trying to do?

This idea of wanting to be balanced can lead to erratic play calling too. There were times when we ran on first down for 3-4 yards and then threw an incomplete pass leaving 3rd and 6/7. If we had run again and picked up 3 then you have more manageable run/pass options on third given the limited pass protection. This might have been a game to just line up and run at them many times. See if you can get some creases over time. Sometimes the run game requires patience and has a wearing effect as you get deeper in the game. It also sets up play action. Against these guys you have to line up and beat them up to win - we did not give ourselves that chance.

Butler had 8 carries for 30 yds. Wadley had 8 carries for 23 yds. That's actually pretty even and they both got stuffed on almost every run.

Think they get it back together this week and win the final two. Everything lined up perfect for the OSU game. Should have played better today, but even with today’s effort we beat Purdue and Nebraska.

Defensively probably. Offensively? I can't say we'd beat Kansas with todays effort.

There is little explanation for the highs and lows of this team. Incredibly inconsistent game to game and within individual games on offense. Couldn't be more frustrating to watch.

Today's numbers might be the worst we've had on offense in the last 40 years or more. There is a lack of leadership on the offensive side from both a player and coaching standpoint. Maybe the road atmosphere is too much for the program now. The energy is not there on the road unless the players bring it to Ames for the in state rivalry. Remember the road wins early on in KFs tenure?

KIRK is spent. He's going for 20 years like Fry. Years have taken there toll. This program needs new life before it becomes even more lethargic. Is BF the answer? I'm beginning to doubt it.

I don't understand at this point in the season how the road can be too much for the program? It's not like we are going into Tuscaloosa or Norman for the first time. Playing @ NW should never be too much for a team.

The lack of success starts up front. They haven't blocked for Wadley in the run game all season. If Zone blocking is this complex, scrap it and copy Wisconsin scheme. Compound that with the fact we have a decent power back in Toren Young, and we go with Wadley or Butler exclusively. Butler has a cast on his arm and can't even hold on to the ball if he gets stood up.

Nebraska and Diaco are bad, but you can't tell me he wont be extra motivated.
Nebraska's defense has been getting torched by mediocre offense after mediocre offense and Diaco is getting (rightly) a lot of the blame. If he needs to play Iowa to "find the motivation" to teach his team to play defense then, in that case, Iowa loses the battle but wins the war

Somebody needs to tell BF you have to block prepare different for 3-4. That was the most ill-prepared offense I have ever seen.

Yes, the worst prepared since......northwestern every year and every bowl game. Stale, stale offensive approach.

They play a 3-4 also. Not good for Iowa.
I have seen both teams play. Iowa will likely pound Nebraska. The huskers are poor tacklers and are soft at the line of scrimmage. Iowa is tough and physical. Don't read anything into yesterday. It was a once in a lifetime defensive performance by the Badgers and the Hawkeyes were coming off a big win hangover.

It doesn't matter if you run Wadley if there is no blocking. What is surprising about Butler is he has a massive cast on his arm and if defense stands him up, easy to strip the ball from him since he' only got 1 good arm. KF normally ultra conservative about ball security, but in this case Upperclassmen bias beats on his ball security bias.
