Powerball is $900 million now

They said it would be $750M tonight. And that was after the last drawing.

Correct but it always goes up depending on how it sells as well prior to the drawing. I thought I ready somewhere a couple days ago it was some ungodly amount of sales like $144,000 a minute nationwide.

No idea, I know at one point your chances of winning were 1 in 175 million and they've increased it to 1 in 292 million by adding numbers and such. Thus, it leads to bigger jackpots.

I've never bought a lottery ticket. I'm actually thinking about getting one. How much does a powerball ticket cost?

Aren't tickets just a dollar? Could someone could theoretically buy all 292 possible numbers and still make out if they didn't have to split it?

I believe you can also offset your gambling winnings with your gambling losses, so the tax liability is also mitigated.

I vaguely remember someone trying this years ago. Australia rings a bell but not sure.

Your odds of winning are always the same....1 in 292 million. That's how many possible combinations of numbers there are. The number of tickets sold doesn't affect that. The size of the jackpot is determined by how many tickets are sold and what carryover there is from the last drawing.

A guy put it in perspective once. He said it was like taking all the phone books in the US, cutting out everyone's number, putting them all in the hopper, and them reaching in and pulling your number out.

Obviously this was before cell phones took the place of land lines.

I think he was responding to my question about the chances of nobody hitting it. There's always going to be combinations that aren't purchased. This drawing might be nearing 250-300
million tickets sold which would make that group much smaller.

If I win, I will enter the Presidential race under the newly formed HROT party.

My platform?

Hookers and blow for everyone.

First thing I would do after purchasing CHA, is ban gasser!

I bought my first ever lottery ticket yesterday. I only had 7 dollars in cash at the time so I bought 3 tickets and a 1 dollar scratch ticket. I guess I didn't win it all but I did win my dollar back on my scratch ticket.

To be honest, I didn't even check my numbers. I didn't know you could win other sums of money for getting some numbers correct. Guess I better look at a them.

Can one of you great economic philosophers help me explain how this is a horrible idea?
