Practice

In the years past when we thought Padilla should play ahead of Petrus, it was apparent that Padilla wasn't better when he'd come in the game. This year, I haven't seen anything that Sullivan has done when he's been in the game that would assure me that McNamara is the clearly the better QB. The fact that they put Sullivan in there in first and goal situations tells me a lot. It tells me they trust Sullivan more that he can get them touchdowns; otherwise there would be no reason to put Sullivan in the game over McNamara in those situations.

At this point, I wonder if it has anything to do with how they're practicing. They've been practicing for 10 weeks at this point. It's just ingrained - Cade is the starter, and he'll remain the starter. Period. Next question.

Also, it's not as if McNamara has been horrible. He hasn't. He isn't Deacon Hill; not even close. It just seems like Iowa's offense has topped out with Cade as the QB. There are things he can do, but Iowa doesn't have the WRs that match what he can do. There are things he can't do that seems to match more with what Sullivan has shown he can do, which matches more with what Iowa can do. That's my argument for why Sullivan should get some more time during the game - his skills are a better fit for what Iowa can do. But it's not going to happen. If Kirk trotted out Deacon Hill for every snap last year, as truly awful as he was, there is no way he's benching McNamara for Sullivan this year.

With all due respect, you don't think McNamara has been horrible? He has a weak arm, poor mechanics, a body that is broken due to unfortunate injuries, and he's simply not very good. If Iowa had top notch receivers they'd already transferred out.

Not trying to argue, and heck, it's plainly obvious that Cade is a great kid. He has a leadership quality about him that will serve him well in the future, but he's not a good QB. Hell, it should be easy to give Sullivan a shot to start. It's not like Cade has any options. He's cashed a big check coming to Iowa and has been equivalent to buying a stock at $100 and selling it for $0.50.

I don't know how you define horrible, but to me, he hasn't been horrible. He hasn't been what we thought he was going to be, for sure. I'm sure injuries have had something to do with that. Horrible? Hill was horrible - that's a horrible QB. McNamara is far more competent than Hill ever was. But, it's really just a matter of opinion; it's okay we disagree on that. I do agree that he's topped out on what he can do for Iowa as the QB. And, I'm also in agreement that Sullivan should get his shot, although we both know that is not going to happen. That is frustrating to me.

He is rated third from last in BIG. To me that is pretty bad.

It's a message board, so we could certainly go down the path of a tedious argument about the definitions of descriptive terms. But I'd rather not do that.
Just stating numbers:
1. Current Iowa QB 1 has the fewest passing yards per game of current B1G starters
2. Current Iowa QB 1 has the lowest total yards from scrimmage (rush + pass) of current B1G starters.

Based on that alone, I submit that it's reasonable to give another player a chance in a game at QB1.

Sure. Well, I’d say he’s been horrible considering the amount of money he’s made coming to Iowa. Like I said, buying a $100 stock (multiple shares) and dumping for $0.50. It is what it is, and I’ve got nothing against Cade. He’s just been a horrible investment.

What do these QB’s do every practice to make it so obvious to Kirk who should start? Spend your time down with the OL, let your position coach make the decision!
I seriously wonder what goes through Lester’s head and whether he will be here next year. I wonder if there are discussions behind closed doors. I would have thought Brian would have had strong discussions last year with his dad knowing his job was on the line. Makes zero sense to me. The fact Hill kept his job last year with no other qb getting one rep tells you all you need to know about Sullivan’s chances.

Stop being logical! There are fans here that just can’t make a change if Kirk doesn’t bless it QB ratings and missed opportunities be damned …ride Cade into the dirt without question if Kirk says it’s so…ummm remember about 4 or 5 historical occurrences that proved Kirk dead wrong in his QB choice. There are at least 2 others that a change wasn’t made even when things were as bad as a Deacon Hill scenario!
Having to prove to anyone that other QB should be tested with Sullivan at a minimum is beyond ridiculous.
Anyone unwilling to see this probably leads a life that is parallel to being a bank teller for their entire career.

That’s an insult to bank tellers. They can talk to people, answer questions, perform multiple tasks, and, importantly, count. 😊

McNamara isn’t good. He is hardly serviceable. He turns the ball over at will. The only position where KF apparently doesn’t care if they turn the ball over.
