This team played their way out of a top 25 rank, and if they lose their best player , cook, next year and you think they will be ranked?

If they aren't ranked they will be close! Returning nearly everyone and knowing the improvements will continue into next year will be awesome! The last 2 years we have been playing a lot of young guys....that's the reason for last years disappointment ...this years improvements. Next year we'll be taking another step forward!!

How many top 25 teams will actually return their most talented player? Pretty rare.

If the full starting 5 is back, there's no doubt they should be Top 25. However, with the Gavvit Games and Vegas tourney right away, it really doesn't matter very much whether they are or they aren't. Pre and early season rankings are much more important in football. Unless it's a top 10 matchup, November college basketball is generally going to be largely invisible, even to recruits.

Played their way out?

They beat a good Cincinnati and almost knocked off 2 seed Tennessee.

Have you been asleep this weekend?

Let’s look at the whole season and the entire body of work , meaning all 9 years. Does the past two tourney games mean Liberty is a national power ?

I think Cook comes back, but that's not a given. The NBA prefers young blood. A column I read by a Cincy source touted Jarron Cumberland's strengths. They also defined his weaknesses, and age was certainly a big factor. They did however say, that he will play pro ball somewhere, and if Cook doesn't come back, then he will play pro ball somewhere as well, IMO.

Then let's actually look at the full season. We finished 23-12, with wins over Michigan, ISU, Oregon, Cincinnati, OSU and Indiana twice.

Our worst loss was to Rutgers, a kenpom top 100 team. Most of our losses were quad 1.

Plus we return at least 4 of our 5 starters and get back Pemsl and Nunge.

We may not be top 25 but we should be close.

It will be year 10 for Fran . How many top basketball schools would give a coach 10 years. Look im happy to beat Cincinnati, but Fran really needs to get to the next level next year. Contend for a big ten title. Only 3 wins in the ncaa over 9 years is not my idea of a good time.

Winning a Big10 title is probably not likely. In a league with 14 teams and let's say 4-5 are in the top 25....and the schedule is uneven. Iowa could be the best team in the league and still finish 3rd.

No one outside of the Big10 even knows who won the regular season title.

I think getting to the 2nd weekend of the NCAA tourney is more fun and gets more notice nationally.

Iowa has won three NCAA games in the last five years and been in the tournament four out of the last six years. You really think that Iowa is even considering removing Fran? His seat is not even luke warm.

Iowa replaced a coach once with these type of results and they’ve spent the last 20 seasons just to get back to them. That all started with “next level” talk as well.

FIFY ...2014 play-in game was lost, in case you forgot.

To answer your question: No, I don't think Barta is considering removing Fran. He wouldn't even consider should Iowa miss the tournament the next three years. That's why Barta needs to be fired. In the event Fran leads the Hawkeyes backwards we'll have an AD in place that will pull the trigger.

Where did I say it was won. Iowa lost its first round game to Tennessee, in OT. Pretty familiar. They were still in the NCAA tournament though. Just because you don’t like Fran, it doesn’t give you the power to acknowledge NCAA tournament bids. The NCAA recognizes them as participants into their tournament, that’s good enough for me.

Iowa has been in the NCAA four times in the last six years. They’ve won three tournament games in the last five years. These are facts. They’ve finished in the top six of the B1G six times in the last seven years.

In the event Fran leads the Hawkeyes backwards, we’ll cross that bridge if/when we ever get there.

Meh, you don't get to include the play-in game, not in my book. You either earn it straight up during the season or you at least win that game and then call yourself a tournament team. It's like two horses racing from the stable to the last starting gate, only one gets to actually race for the $$.

Regarding Barta, no reason to keep the guy around. The pumpkinhead is bad enough at his primary job managing his staff and documenting employee discipline; we don't want him filling any future coaching vacancies when the time comes. Time to give him his undeserved severance and prepare for the inevitable.

Good thing it’s your book then. Don’t include it. Nobody cares. The NCAA recognizes them, so as far as the NCAA is concerned, Iowa has participated in THEIR tournament four times in the last six years. Deal with it. You can make any claim you want to. It means nothing.

Iowa had just as much of a chance to win the championship as Duke, Tennessee, UNC, MSU, etc.

Give up trying to persuade the anti-Fran crowd, they are all glass half empty people. They cherry pick stats and ignore historical trends. Next year is going to be awesome, and they’ll still be unhappy.

Too many 4-star recruits?

This post is ridiculous.

Connor McCaffery
Rivals: 4-star
ESPN 100: 4-star, #92
247Sports Composite Ranking: 3-star, #152

Patrick McCaffery
Rivals: 4-star, #68
ESPN 100: 4-star, #58
247Sports Composite: 4-star, #71

Dude....talk about ridiculous posts...

Connor has been playing for a year. Rankings are now moot for him. We can see what we have. Would this kid be getting significant minutes on any other B1G team? Name one.

I've watched Patrick in person. He definitely has top 150 skills and runs the floor very well for a big. Very well. Will he be a factor as a frosh? Doubt it. He'll get pushed all over.

Rankings for both are bogus. You don't have to believe me. Just watch.

Next year's team certainly has a lot of potential, but I could also see them missing the tournament.

  • Offensively, there's little reason to expect much of a drop off. We've ranked top 20 nationally the past two years, and I expect that Wieskamp will play an even larger role in the offense next year. Even if we lose Cook, we still have Garza back giving us a big time scorer in the post, and we've seen guys like Kriener and Pemsl score efficiently in the post as well. We return some very good 3 point shooters as well in Bohannon, Wieskamp, and Moss. I'm interested to see what Nunge brings offensively next year and I think he will be a welcome addition.
  • Defensively is where we'll again have questions next year. Bohannon is never going to be a good defender, and we again won't have a rim protector next year. With that said, the team played smarter defensively this year than they did last year and they can make similar improvements next year. I don't see a high ceiling defensively, but if we could even finish next year 10th in the Big 10 in defensive efficiency, I expect we'd easily be a top 25 team. We were on the fringe of being a top 25 team this year even as the worst defensive team in the Big 10.

Connor was a redshirt freshman backup PG who got nothing out of his freshman year because of injury and illness. I pointed out recruiting rankings to show that he was a legit recruit. You don't think there's a path to improvement? Depends on how much effort he puts into hoops.

As for Patrick, he's not even on campus yet and you're dismissing recruiting ranking? Unless he really impresses, he's not getting more than bench minutes next year anyway....so not sure what your point is. I do like how all the services have him as a top 75, but you know he's definitely top 150.

My point is your hyping these guys as 4* top whatever recruits is stupid.

Connor hasn’t come close to living up to his mediocre ranking. Patrick might. Though at 175lbs... don’t hold your breath.

You can usually tell when kids are over-hyped. Connor indisputably was. Patrick likely is also.

Sorry to rustle your jimmies with reality, Superfan.
