Proud of Fran and the team, but recruiting has to drastically improve if

No, your whole point of this thread is to troll. Where have you been the last 3 weeks??? Not here. Now you randomly reappear and take a random shot at recruiting? Your post right before this one shows exactly what you are after, stirring the pot. Saying we don't have any players that can step up into White's role? Seriously?? I would argue you have several that are more than capable, starting with Uthoff. Iowa has the potential to be very good next year.

If you were anyone else, that is always around and a good contributor to this board, you probably could have had a good discussion here as Iowa does need to improve it's recruiting. However, you aren't and you are only trying to stir the pot.

How many people really enjoy watching a Kentucky game? Do you wonder who's going to win it? They are the most boring team in the country.
And their recruiting better improve if they're going to be any good next year.

I really like the class we have coming in. These guys come from big time programs and are winners. All are athletic, long and a couple are really good shooters. We should be harder to guard. We do need a center and point though.

Poor timing on the OP. Let's see how much longer the Hawks can keep winning.

I also think recruiting needs to improve to start playing for championships, but maybe not "drastically." If Fran can just add a top 50 difference maker every couple of years, and keep bringing in talented kids who fit his system and are willing to work hard to improve, the team can very good, Is there a Ronnie Lester out there who wants to play at Iowa? I think the coaches connections to high level programs will start to really pay off in the next few years.

I think Fran is recruiting pretty good players. The incoming classes looks really good IMO.

Devyn Marble NBA
White NBA Prob.
Uthoff Transfer - Poss. NBA
Olaseni Beast
Gesell Coming into own
Woodbury Could have breakout senior season
Uhl Going to be good

Fleming 3 point specialist and leader type
Moss 3 point shooter and can get to rim
Wagner I think will bring defense first then get better with offense
Hutton Will lead the defense and has a nice pullup jumpshot

I think we're set!! Still need another PG and Center

I am glad Fran has helped low ranked players develop so well.

But there is no arguing the fact that higher ranked players make better teams in general. If this is in question, take a look at the Top 10 teams. How many don't have any 3, 4, or 5 star players in the past 5 years?
Are you trying to say Iowa doesn't have any 3, 4, or 5 star players in the past 5 years? I know what you're trying to argue, but you might want to rethink how you approach it.......

Dr. Tom mediocre? You can't be serious. He won every first round game in the NCAA tournament, about 10 or 11 I think. He went to the sweet 16 his last year. His team beat North Carolina home and away. He had some bad breaks also. Chris Street getting killed was tragic. We had a U of I president that wanted to unilaterally make freshman ineligible. I was in the minority that wanted to keep Coach Davis. He had a lot of class and the teams were fun to watch, win or lose.

Nice - 12 conference wins, top tier conference finish, NCAA tourney lock, 3 20 win seasons in a row - and the team needs some "drastic" changes.

Sorry but our recruiting class is pretty good this year and sounds like were going to add to it.

I get it these guys aren't McDonals AA and ESPN top 100, but they are solid players.

I have seen Moss a few times on Comcast and he plays the wing very good. He can shoot it from outside and also can attack the rim. He is 6-4, 6-5 and very athletic. He struggled early in the season and has come on as of late. HE is playing some of the best competition in the Chicago league.

Flemming is at power house Oak Hill. He is a shooter and will be a shooter. I like that he is big bodied and looks ready to go for the college game. He was on a team that didn't share the ball very well, so if scored 12 points, he had to be efficient in shooting it because he had some other players on his team averaging 20-30 shots a game.

Wagner & Hutton I have not seen. Sounds like Hutton is a lock down defender. Doesn't look like much of a scorer, but who knows coaches get him in the right system, he could be. Wagner only saw one game and he looked very "athletic" and strong. I think he will be a good asset to next years team. He will bring athleticism we haven't had since Basabe. This kid has multiple Div 1 offers for football and I think he will be able to run the floor better than Gabe O can. So that will be nice.

I think this class will come in next year and be good role players. None of them are going to light up the stat sheet, but if they can come in and give valuable minutes and produce a little, Iowa will be alright. We are returning 7 or 10 players that play regularly. That's pretty good percentage of players returning.

I know this is a message board but when people use terms like drastic or epic it just kills the credibility of the point they are trying to make. ..at least in this instance. This Iowa team obviously has a lot of talent. ..a lot.

I could agree that an improvement in recruiting can take us to a higher level. ..but our current talent is capable of taking us a long way. ..

This. Iowa hasn't won an NCAA tournament game since 2001 and people are already whining about national prominence and lack thereof. What a joke. This isn't Xbox and that sort of development in the real world is much more complicated than taking twenty minutes to press the A button.

Reasonable expectations, i.e. winning a game in the NCAA tournament are perfectly acceptable, but whining about national recognition (and seemingly placing blame on the best coach this program has had this century) for a program that's been nationally irrelevant for the better part of three decades is the definition of lunacy. Furthermore, Iowa hasn't been a "consistent" contender for a conference championship in my lifetime and I'm in my mid-30s.

This is the best Iowa team in a decade (that still lost to both of its in-state rivals) and a small minority of people can't just enjoy it and celebrate the clear, objective progress that the program has made. I truly feel sorry for such miserable human beings; they must be very unhappy people.

looking at next years team none of the newcomers need to be high scorers
PG 6'2 Gesell is tied for 4th in scoring with 7.1 ppg
SG 6'6 Jok is tied for 4th in scoring with 7.1 ppg
SF 6'9 Uthoff 2nd in scoring with 12.2 ppg
PF 6'8 Uhl avg 2.2 PPG
C 7'1 Woodbury 6th in scoring with 6.8 ppg

Clemmons avg 4.8 ppg
those 6 will pick up the slack in scoring next fall and with there being 3 SR's, 1 JR and 1 SO with a SR 6th man the need for a FR to step in and be a major scorer is not there

MG, Jok and Uthoff will all be in be Dbl Digits with Woody being close if not in DBL Digit scoring, to me it could look like this now.

Uthoff 16 ppg
Jok 15 ppg
Gesell 13 ppg
Woodbury 9-11 ppg
Uhl 7-8 ppg
Clemmons 6-7 ppg

low avg per game just from the starting 5 + 6th man
66 ppg next years team might just avg more per game that this years team did.

While I agree, keep in mind it took Bo Ryan 13 years to get the Badgers to a national top 10 level.

One step at a time. This year's step (12 BIG wins and a solid tourney berth) is a big step forward. You can now sell two NCAA's and a top four Big Ten finish to recruits.
Hardly. Bo Ryan won the league his first two seasons and has had several top 10 finishes in his earlier years. 2007 they had a brief stint at #1

Did McCaffery say that we are almost certain about a fifth member of this class?

For the incoming class for Iowa to be very good almost all the recruiting analysts have to wrong about almost all of the Iowa recruits. This good team in 2015 starts three top 100 players, a Parade AA (not what it once was but still of some national note) and one super sleeper (White). This team should be winning and it is. But the great class of 2012 is done in 2016. What comes next?

Iowa desperately needs a quality big center. A low post offensive and, more importantly, defensive presence. Someone to keep the other team's big guys off the offensive boards. That is a very important need because behind Woodbury there is nothing on the roster right now to fill that vital need or anywhere close to it next year or the following when he is gone.

.

This +1,000. I'm old enough to remember Iowa's last B1G title (in 1979) and the golden decade of the 1980s that followed. Since Iowa's last regular season title, here are the years where Iowa legitimately contented for the conference title:

1980-81 - Hawks finished 13-5, 1 game behind Indiana
1981-82 - Iowa goes 4-6 down the stretch, finished 12-6, 2 games behind Minnesota. The late-season swoon included the Jim Bain call at Purdue, which cost Iowa in a 66-65 loss.
1986-87 - Iowa has the bad fortune to have its greatest collection of talent in a generation at the same time IU and Purdue had great teams as well. Iowa goes 14-4 and finishes 1 game behind Indiana and Purdue.
1996-97 - kind of counts as Iowa finishes in second, 4 games behind 16-2 Minnesota. This was the Clem-cheating Gophers of Bobby Jackson fame.
2005-06 - Iowa ties with Illinois for 2nd at 11-5, 1 game behind OSU. Iowa loses a February game to a bad Northwestern team when Iowa leads by 7 with 4 minutes to go and loses 51-48.

So in nearly 30 years, Iowa has finished within 4 games of the conference title a whopping ONE TIME!.

The program has a proud history that is mostly 30 years old, which means nothing to today's high school players and zip to the national media. I am beyond thrilled Iowa is in a place where they are firmly in the NCAA tournament and not in need of a miracle run in the BTT. And one that has a reasonable opportunity to win a game or 2 in the NCAA tournament. My hope is that Iowa finds an impact graduate transfer to add to next year's veteran team. That would make it 3 straight years in the NCAA tournament, something not done since the 1990s.

Then we are close to bridging to the subsequent top-flight talent (or what appears to be) with Pemsl and the older McCaffery boy coming on board.

You just moved right on from being a downer about this years team to being a downer about next years recruits.

I don't know if you remember how you once commented at my optimism that if this were the Alamo you'd be proud to stand beside me?

Well, you wouldn't be there for long because I'd chuck your pessimistic rear off the wall and let the Mexicans have you.

Aaron white has made a living off of making higher rated recruits look bad.

Some of you act like a high ranking somehow means something. All it really means is that the kid has the right pedigree from the right kind of family. Kind of an interesting thing for Iowans to put so much emphasis on don't you think?

Yes, that's why all the top 10 teams are loaded with 2 and 3 star guys....

Of course it needs to improve. Get enough talent and neutral court losses to Penn State don't happen.
