PTL 7/21

Moss & Williams have themselves a horrible shooting night. Combined for 10-36 shooting. Get crushed by Gatens & Uhl. 103-74... Ouch!

For a team that a lot of fans are predicting to be an improved three point shooting team, the shooting percentages by the Iowa players this PTL season have been pretty underwhelming for the most part. The Gazette had Moss at 2-15 and Bohannon 3-12 from three last night. Ouch!

They lift and practice (The Hawkeyes) before the PTL games. Results could, and should be slanted with that in mind.

I was thinking the same thing. Although Baer and Dailey have looked good.

Still we should have some shooters. Jok, Baer, Jones are all proven. Dailey, Bohannon, Moss, Williams, Uhl need to come around and give us some consistency. If we can get a couple of those to prove themselves, we will be just fine.

That would make sense, sense. Lifting can really alter the shot. I went and shot a game of pool the other day after lifting and it definitely had an effect. And that's just using a que.

Not only that, but in certain situations the players might be to emphasize certain parts of their games. Meaning, if they are working on particular parts of their game in workouts, they might be told to try some of those things out in live, game speed situations. If you're working on a skill during a workout, even one with an opposing player, it's not the same as a game. Better to put those skills that aren't perfected yet into use in PTL than during a regular season game that actually matters.

In addition, let's face it, it's a step somewhere between pick up ball and exhibition game as far as structure. Guys might be more prone to take shots here that they wouldn't in a real game. This is why I don't care one bit about shooting %, turnovers, other stats, and care far more about things like "has Player A tightened his handles" "has Player B fixed the hitch in his shooting form" "has Player C figured out body positioning during a shot for rebounding purposes". Anything beyond items like those should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Maybe Playet A thru Z should go back and work on the three-point shooting in practice

Maybe Player A through Z is working on it, taking shots in the PTL they aren't used to taking in a game in an effort to get better and won't be taking those during the regular season. Add in the lifting and the offseason conditioning, recipe for not being in mid-season form.

We're talking about Moss and Bohanon, what kind of 3-point shots are the taking in the PTL that they won't be in real games? And if they're taking crappy shots in the PTL then the fact that they can't get any look they want against summer league defense isn't a great sign.

Again, players are lifting in the summer. They are working on conditioning. Of course they may struggle to keep up their accuracy. Don't read any more into the negative than you would the positive regarding the Prime Time League. SSG T just explained it pretty well.

That's just silly. Good 3pt shots come within the flow of the offense. You can force shots whether it's summer league, rec league, or the NBA. They can get looks they shouldn't be taking in conference play too.

So, Moss was averaging 25 points a game while shooting near 50% from the field, but now he sucks cuz he shot poorly in one game? Folks, it's the PTL. Please don't put too much stock in this thing.

Well...catch the ball 25 feet from the basket, look, look, dribble/dribble/dribble, look, look throw up off balance 25 footer as a taller opponent is closing out. Or, running down court, catch and shoot transition 23 footer while still sliding sideways instead of going straight up and down.

Basically, there are quite a few bad 3 point shots even good 3 point shooters can take. Besides, I'm pretty sure both Moss and Bohannon came in with reputations as good 3 point shooters. How about we wait until either of them take a 3 against a D1 team, in a regulation game, before declaring they can't shoot.

They don't need a team full of 3 point shooters, they need 1-2 on the court at any given time. Jok is a given and there are quite few others that have at least the resemblance of being able to shoot from the outside.

I'm not worried one bit about the offense, they'll score. I'm far more concerned abiut the other end. If they are efficient on the defensive end, they'll be a really good team this year.

I agree with those who say PTL is pretty meaningless. That said I remember Moss as being touted as athletic and a guy who could score, not as a 3 point shooter. Maybe I'm just old and my memory is going.

He was touted as that coming in, but the scuttlebutt from practices during his redshirt year at Iowa was that he was nearly going shot for shot with Jok at times. HIs teammates were really impressed with his stroke.

The PTL is far from meaningless. It's not the end all, be all, but there is a lot of good that comes out of it IMO.

I"m sure that once the season starts conditioning won't be emphasized.
