2 coaches have now mentioned publicly that ISM needs to spend less time on the phone. Parallels have been drawn to the Akrum Wadley fumbling/weight situation as he came up through the Iowa RB ranks. I think there is a method to this and I would say that similar to Wadley, ISM has an extraordinary amount of talent and ability that even he is not aware of. The staff are trying to motivate him to work harder to make the necessary gains to contribute to this team in a very big way. We have been talking receivers, and the position desperately needs to make a quantum leap of sorts to propel our offense to new heights. Wadley needed to hold on to the ball and keep a healthy weight. ISM needs to spend more time studying to become a better receiver, catch the ball consistently, and putting on a little more weight wouldn't hurt either.

When is he on the phone? Meetings? We don't need any bs keeping our talented WRs off the field... I'm stoked about this group. Self sabotage seems fitting right about now.

Ihmir is a long way from his home in New Jersey, so I suspect some online communication there. For kids his age, that often means the constant kind. But coach Doyle’s new monitoring tools, while helpful, are likely to get some pushback from the BIg Brother feeling of constantly being watched. Hope they can all figure it out.

The tools numerous programs are now using as well?
Why would anyone with the slightest bit of nfl potential, not want to use every resource possible?

When KF first mentioned the fone thing I think It was noticed that ISM would be using his fone quite heavily at the football facility. KF said that some of his free time using the fone could be much better spent in the film room. There are nuances to the game he could pick up on and test in the field. I don't think any of the players could get away with being on the fone in meetings. Kid has a ton of potential just like Wadley. Hope to see him flourish. This 2 star don't even know that he was brought in because he could be diamond in the rough NFL material.

Yeah ... it's all about trying to encourage him to make the best use of his time. It's all about maximizing the opportunities to get better. Sometimes young guys think that they know it all ... they think that their ability is a static thing ... rather than the highly dynamic thing that it actually is. Here's hoping that Ihmir's maturity continues to grow!

Haha Kirk needs to get with the times. He sounds like a grumpy old grandpa. Kids are going to be on their phones all the time this day and age. Let it go lol.

No he needs to put the phone down & work on football & his studies.
I see to many young people playing with their phones at work & not getting their work done
that they are being paid to do.

Its really too bad you can't watch your speedy clown show doddering all over the field this wknd. Probably better they get many more practices in before they try to show anything on the field. The embarassment would be too much for you.

I don’t know about the phone thing but I was a bit disappointed not to see him on the list of players with a nice weight gain. 5-10 pounds of extra muscle would have been nice.
Was he the same weight as last year? Given his body type, perhaps he put on lean muscle but it's not showing in the weight department?

According to the list posted a couple weeks ago he had remained the same as last year. So given his body composition did not have much "bad" weight last year it's doubtful he dropped "bad" weight for muscle to remain the same.

I think the point is ISM and all FB players should be fully focused on FB when at the FB facilities and when under the watchful eyes of the staff (and especially the head coach). Working out, practices, watching film and position group meetings are all activities best done without the student-athlete sneaking a peak at his smartphone.

I was not going to be able to make it anyways because of a busy work schedule. The anticipation for September 1st will be sky high now for everyone.

I would guess it probably is the result of a "now infamous single incident" more than the thing is glued to his hands the entire time at practice etc. Sort of a "we have rules when in meetings" or something similar, and he got famously (in the coach's collective opinion) caught.

It obviously left an impression, and that impression is being used gently as a reminder why he's here. The Iowa coaches have done this "gentle public chiding" before.

Why the hell are you, as an ISU fan, posting in this thread?
I'm an ISU fan 1st there is no question there. But like I have said multiple times in the past I don't hate Iowa and am starting to follow them more now after marrying my wife who's grandfather played for Iowa in the late 50's and was a member of the Rose Bowl team.

It's up to ISM to decide how good he wants to be and how much he wants to play. Technology effects all of us (hell, look at me, I am typing in a chat room while I am supposed to be working) ... Maybe ISM is picking the wrong moments to be married to his phone.

It's not just kids IMO in fact a big percentage of post on this board during the week are from phones.
Ahhh, yes. A voice of reason. And you are right. Phones are a big part of young people's lives, and always will be. Plus we don't know why he's on his phone so much, quite possibly for issues we know nothing about, nor need to know anything about. It's his journey, not ours, not KF's. His.

If your endgame by following Iowa more is to post comments like "Haha Kirk needs to get with the times. He sounds like a grumpy old grandpa", then we're good here. You can keep those hot takes over at CycloneFanatic.

ISM better be careful when he goes to Jack Trice next year or they'll steal that cell phone (along with any cash or other belongings in his locker)

Any coach that has that opinion not just Kirk is going to get that response from me. It's 2018 kids are going to be on their phones. It' the way it is.

we have enough haters among our "fans" o_O

Shocking the coaches didn't bring this up about the other 84 scholarship players on the team.

We must have heavily recruited the Amish over the last few years seeing that they aren't tempted by cell phones during team events. That, or you're just not very smart.

I'll go with that latter on that one.

This dooshnut charade of a story won't fly over here. You have no interest in the Hawks.
I want ISM to contribute to what could potentially be the most successful Iowa team(s) in the greatest way possible. Of course when I was 18 I might not have been aware enough to realize potential either. I have patience for the youth of our players but what if he could do something during his free time in the off season to push the WR corp to the top and bring us big time success. We shall see, but he has a chance to be a real leader.

This is the most likely explanation. His phone went off once, maybe twice when it should not have. A few coaches have delivered the message to him.

Could be family, could be a hot date, but there are times when you turn your freaking phone off. He knows that now.

I was thinking the same thing.........pretty sure the other 99% of the team is from the same generation :)

I left phone in car all day at work. Was so liberating. Plan on not having cell with me at all times now. Much more peaceful and productive.

True statement
I'm 69 (old fart)
Because my old flip phone goes to roaming & eats up minutes when we are up
at the home in Northern Wisconsin we just purchased a smart phone.
Sure as S#*T the wife is on it all the time doing what we used to complain about
sitting at a stop light or at a restaurant.
It is a good tool but there are other/better things to do in life than stare at your phone all the time.

Many of them still are- BUT they just choose better/more appropriate times to be on their phones than during practice or film. But I get what you're saying.

People are obsessed, young and old. I'm on mine more than I probably should be as well.

That's basically what I'm saying. Discipline and focus are at the core of success.
