Qualifiers are out, Gunther got at large, Wilcke did not

I'm fine with Wilcke not getting a spot. Didn't do enough throughout the season

Sadly, I agree. He was undersized and just wasn't at the same level of the real competition. Aside from when he was wrestling the lesser competition, he just didn't look like a qualifier. However, I'm excited to see what he can bring at 84 next year.

Watch out for Wisconsin and their 9 qualifiers. LOL

9th in the Big 10, 9 qualifiers. Nice work Badgers

NC State has 10 and Stanford has 9; they're both below Wisconsin in the rankings. Just hate that we don't have 9 or 10. Hate it big time for Stoll...poor kid can't buy any luck!!

I guess I understand what you're getting at, but this Iowa team just has too many holes... again. It's not such a big deal if those big dogs are bonus point machines, but outside of Gilman... I don't expect that after Thursday.

I concur...way too many holes and non-bonus point scorers. Though I think Sammy will look to bring it this last year. Think he will bonus his way to the quarters...and think the same for Kem if his knee is healthy, which it didn't seem to be during the B10s. Also, I think Clark will bonus his way to the quarters...think he's got something to prove. Like you, once quarters start, we will stop scoring bonus points, and think the same for the rest of the schools at most weight classes...except PSU. I think they will bonus their way to the semi-finals in 5, if not 6 weight classes (have to see whether Suriano is really hurt or playing a mental game on the competition), which is why PSU will win it all again. I don't think Okie State has a chance to win it all, and I think tOSU simply doesn't have the horses to pull it off...though I'm pulling for them to take down PSU. I'm just hoping our boys don't choke. Anything less than one champion, two other finalists and a 3rd place would be be a wrap up to a very disappointing campaign. That said, I'm looking for Gilman and Clark to bring home the hardware! :)

My concern is that he didn't seem to do well even in the matches where he wasn't undersized.

Now, that said, upper weight kids just tend to have higher ceilings when they are young and he can/will certainly improve.

I like Wilcke, seems like a good all around athlete but I hope Brands still lands an elite 184 ASAP. Im a bit with Spponer in blame it on just being outhorsed.

You will have a hard time convincing me that just going down to 184 will be a night and day difference with Wilckes offense just because the 184 guys are just quicker. And speed/quickness translate up not down which is why Bobby Steveson could be really improved when he goes up. Being at 184 should improve top/bottom and defense but really if a guy is undersized at a weight id like to see him be a bit quicker at getting to guys even if he cant finish. Im not sure I saw that enough out of Wilcke this year.

To me hes is just going to be a 12-15th ranked 184 who maybe could AA when he is a SR. but its Iowa. Every starter has to be better than that. so basically a 184 version of Carton or a Mike Kelly. That doesn't win titles.

I would agree wasdt21. Seems to me Wilcke wrestled really well on Saturday but come Sunday he wrestled extremely tight. The more matches the better for this young man!

he's going at 84 next year, right?

Cash may be a title contender or he may be a national qualifier. I am gonna give him the benefit of doubt until he shows otherwise. None of us know how he is responding to the season being over. Is he sulking or is he working for next year?

He has the athleticism to compete at an "Iowa" level. Does he have the drive and discipline? How he fares next year will tell us what he did in the off season. He made big strides last summer. I will choose to be hopeful until he gives me reason not to be.

I believe there will be some good news coming soon!! Hopefully those of you who were "fine with it" won't mind.....

I was fine with him being left out because it was hard to disagree but I love this news. Hope he makes the most of it.

wish wilcke would have made it so he could get a feel for ,so he wouldn't be as intimadated later when he might have a chance to score some points.
This is why I'm glad he got in. Having this first experience on the big stage will hopefully be huge for his confidence and determination to improve moving forward, even if he goes 0-2 or 1-2.

The big thing I will be looking at is his effort level, I hope he goes down swinging, and not standing around trying to sneak out a close one.

I'll reserve my judgment for Wilcke at 184 until we actually get to see him compete at the weight again. My off the cuff prediction will be a similar SO/JR year as Sammy Brooks. R12ish next year would be awesome, and if he could get on the podium in 2019 at the 7/8, having an AA in the lineup is always a plus.

Again, just shooting from the hip, its impossible to know how much Wilcke will improve and how tough the weight class will be. I suspect there may be a slight lull in the weight class coming because of how tough & deep it has been for the past 5 years or so straight. Like we're seeing right now at 157, 197 and we saw a few years ago at 149. The top end guys will always be good at every weight, but if the depth isn't as tough as it has been, thats where we can have our Taurus' coached up to get on the podium, to accommodate our Corvettes standing at the top.

Wilke does have some athletic ability, he does have fairly quick feet for a bigger guy. What he needs to the rev up the motor, too much waiting for the perfect shot that never comes. Hopefuly at 184 with the size adjustment he will not feel so cautious to shoot. He has to free his mind and get in the kind of shape that allows him to compete hard the whole match and he needs to pump up the physical and nasty a few levels. There were a number of times this year where he just was not competing and battling for every inch of every position. Hopefully he can build off making the tournament and carry through a good off season.
