Question about Bohannon

If he decides to pull the plug on this season, it is not automatic that he gets another season of eligibility next year, correct? He has already played, so he can't take a standard redshirt year. I believe he would have to apply to the NCAA for a medical hardship.....that scares the crap out of me with the way the NCAA operates. TIA for any information on this.

I don't know more than what I have heard Dolphin say and that is he can play in 30% of the games before a decision has to be made. I did not get the impression it would be a stretch to get a medical red shirt given he is coming off of surgery. Seems like there are quite a few of these situations each year where players get hurt early or need more time to rehab from surgery.

We’ve been granted a waiver each of the past two seasons. I have no idea why anyone would worry about it.

You are correct. They have to apply for it. While I trust the coaches know what they are doing, I do have a little concern that this is the slam dunk we all expect. Not because of the 30% thing, but because this is for season ending injuries. This injury was well prior to the season obviously, and they would essentially be shutting him down because he tried coming back too soon rather than a new injury. Is there a chance the NCAA would rule against him because of that? I hope not, and trust Fran and company have checked it out. But I have thought about that. The NCAA hasn't always been known for its consistency in these things.

Three years in a row even, although Dale Jones transferred to North Dakota with his extra year.

Based on the increased minutes last game I'm thinking he's playing it out this year, maybe even starting again soon. Schedule-wise, he can play 10 games of the first 15, and we play ISU the 11th game. I'm guessing he isn't missing that one, so if he sits out one of the next two "cupcake" (at least on paper) games or one of the Vegas back to back games before then it's probably a sign he'll save it for ISU and then sit out after. If he plays through all these upcoming four games I can't see him sitting out Syracuse, MIchigan, or Minnesota before we play ISU. Of course if Iowa loses three or four of these games maybe he does shut it down because we won't make the tournament regardless.

His demeanor on the court is the same as always, but he looks about 65% of himself. I think he shuts it down if he doesn’t feel at least 75% in 3 weeks.
And no one could blame him. We’re not talking about getting back to the old golf game here. It’s grown men competing like hell every day.

A 100% healthy Bohannon next season
would be better than if he can only operate
at 65% this season. He is a talented 3
point shooter who doesn't look comfortable
yet. Hopefully he sits out this season.

I wonder if he will ever be the player that he was? Maybe play him this year and move on.
He seems like a great young man but he is not destined for the NBA.

I personally hope he sits out the year prior to losing a medical redshirt. He does appear to be operating at about half-throttle and his movement is rather stiff IMO. Plus he would avoid adult responsibilities for another year and enjoy college life longer. Win win.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be a turd, and still aren't. I just know he isn't going to play this year. Feel bad for the kid, and you will too.
I’m sure he’d rather sit this year, as making even the NIT will be difficult, rather than miss next year when their prospects for an NCAA birth look much better.

Skip a game or two soon then play through ISU, then sit. He's not going to want to end his hawkeye career with this team, i'm afraid. Going to be a long year

He's not playing this year.

Well ok then, no need to discuss anymore guys. Larry has the inside scoop!

Actually Larry may indeed have the inside scoop. I've noticed posts in the past from him that suggests to me that he has ties to the Bohannon family.

Fingers crossed that JBo can play. I like him and Joe T coming in as the 2nd team. They seem to tear it up. Throw in Pemsl and the trio could be something to see for the next few months.... They'd definitely take out the opponents 2nd team.

Although if Joe T remains a coachable player and plays under control, he may be the starting PG before too long. The guy's got skills. And is a blur.

Hopefully JBo's health takes a turn for the better. We could use him this year... Plus I don't see him starting again. CJF is the real deal. And it is just a matter of time before Joe T takes the starting point, if he remains coachable... We need that.

So, you're the tiny voice in JBO's head, awesome! What other nuggets can you throw out there for us?
Not saying you're wrong, but to make a statement as bold as you did, you must either be a relative or someone close to the Iowa program to be so certain, because Jordan is acting no different then you did last year at this time and was questioned for his timidness then too.
There are new faces in the program and it makes no sense not to allow those new players to get more minutes as we'll need them up to speed by the time we get to conference games.
Until the deadline for Jordan to make the decision to either continue to play or shut down for the season, I'll continue to enjoy his time on the court as one of the best guards that Iowa has ever had. Iowa doesn't need to rely so heavily on him this year as they did last year, I'll bet he appreciates that as well.

Naz long did this same thing a couple years back and was fine.

Wow, ok. I’m not claiming to be a tiny voice or anything else. I simply stand by what I said and wish the best for JB and all the other guys.

All signs point to JBo shutting it down soon.

I guess that's it then, the decision has been made, the paperwork is in the mail, and as Jordan once said a few years ago, we can all relax. No need to have these discussions anymore about Bohannan red-shirting, it's now been made official!

Haha no it is not official but I will be surprised if he doesn't shut it down soon.

Pretty sure the NCAA made it more clear cut. Like in football you can still play 4 game and redshirt.

If Bohannan returns for next year, which McCaffery's son will walk on or not play next year or who red-shirts without a scholarship of the 5 new players sighed to next years class? 14 scholarship players are 1 too many!
Will Jordan return as a walk-on?

Did not play tonight....but really didn’t need him. If he can play 30% of games and still get med redshirt, likely saving him for more important games.

He did lose the beard in Vegas.

It is pretty much guaranteed if they have the medical documentation.

As I said before the season, if JBo isn't 100% I want him to shut it down and come back healthy. Could 80% JBo add value to the team? Absolutely. But playing through pain or playing his way into shape is a recipe for reinjury, not necessarily his hip, but another joint related to adjustments he makes to take pressure off his hip.

Just get healthy and come back next year.
