Question about Nebraska fans

Purdue grad here. I have immense respect for Iowa amongst the many other teams
We’ve played for years and years.

Ever since ferentz started Iowa has surpassed Purdue. I was shocked when we won last year and will consider us underdogs this year.

Sooo... we played Nebraska last week, and uh, I thought I was related to some people who have delusions of grandeur. But to me, husker fan is delusional on a level that Indiana fan can only dream of.

My question is, have they always been this bad? Or was there a time when their self image was more in line with performance?

Reading their board, there are people who think that they just fell asleep against Purdue and blah blah blah. They regularly compare themselves and what they can be to Ohio State ...

It made me feel for you being their biggest in conference rival. You must hear some really dumb shit from them.

well, see, basically, Nebraska used to be a major national power capable of competing with and beating quite literally anyone. those days are long gone, but the problem with Nebraska fans is that they tend to live in this fantasy world in which the next coach is the catholicon who will lead them back to greatness. they have gone through this cycle about four times in the last twenty years, with similar results. Many Iowa fans tend to be enjoy the schadenfreude of the situation.

You are quite right, sir, in that they do suffer from delusions of grandeur. I guess it is called denial of reality.

braskans are nutjob hillbillies that think they can turn things around without going back to the old ways(massive cheating ;) ).

they were bad last year because they didn't lift weight or do conditioning.
frost has been working them to the bone and now they are tough as nails.
they lose now because they are stupid and not a team.
not sure what the next excuse will be.....

Darrell hazell has to feel like he got hosed after watching frost. Hazell, after all, was 1-3 after four games. Lost to ND by only 7.

They made a major mistake leaving the BIG 8 or 12. They could recruit the SW because the players knew they would play in that area. Now they can't get SW players and have too much competition going East. Frost will get some good Florida players, but not enough to reach past glory.

I didn't know that the kid braska fans were hyping up the ass quit as well. Tyjon Lindsey I think was his name

Purdue has historically been in the lower tier of B10 football. Sprinkle in a good year every so often and pretty much comes down to being inconsistent. That being said Brohm is a very excellent coach who I feel has them over the hump and in the right direction. If he sticks around I have little doubt Purdue becomes consistent and competitive.

I hate talking about Nebraska, it just gets old. Iowa fans can be just as bad, just read any game thread, even if we're winning. But....we are nowhere near their level of douchness, Potential yes, but not quite in the same league.

I grew up in Omaha and after living elsewhere for 12 years, have moved back and own a home in Omaha. I'm 36 years old and can say that I've never known Nebraska fans to have a "self image that is in line with performance." They've always been the most entitled and insufferable fan base in all of sports. Not just college football. It's literally so bad that the domestic violence rates in this state spike when Nebraska loses.

I actually do have hope for the future generation of Cornhusker fans, though. I coach freshman football and my kids have never known Nebraska to be anything beyond mediocre. I'm hopeful that these kids will grow up to enjoy winning, but not consider it their birthright like the generations of Nebraska fans I've known.

So let’s get this straight. Do any of you truly think if Iowa or Purdue had won multiple national titles in the 90’s that neither one of your fan bases would have aspirations of reaching that level of play again? Even as a long time Husker I have a hard time seeing us getting back to that level but I don’t see why believing we can put together a team that can hang with the big dogs of the big 10 is so delusional.

Iowa wrestling under Dan Gable has been viewed by some as the most dominant college sports dynasty of all time. Iowa fans know that will never happen again. But in fairness to your position, I believe Iowa will win NCAA wrestling championship.

Aspiring to be good is not the issue. Acting like obnoxious, arrogant, d-bags is. Never seen another fan base talk shit to a team that just curb stomped them because they got a commit during the offseason.

The sooner the Nebraska folks accept that 8-4 + bowl game...... is an okay year the better for them.

I haven't seen anyone give Nebraska fans a hard time about getting back to 10 wins etc...,, I think the reason Nebraska fans get a bad rep is the fact that among other things you had a coach (Pelini) who averaged 9+ wins and got called out for not winning enough.

On the flip side imagine what would happen if Alabama starts losing, their fan base would have an anyurism.

Some Nebraska fans can definitely put the blinders on and have ridiculous expectations, those are typically the older ones that don’t know much about football.

Gotta say, hearing about “unrealistic expectations” from a fan of a team with a losing record that thought they might win their division this year is a little ironic.

Pelini got annihilated on the big stage at least once a season. Whenever we would think we were getting over the hump he would get destroyed. Plus he was creating a very toxic culture among the team. He had to go, although Riley was a terrible attempt to replace him.

Unfortunately for you, I think Louisville will fire their coach this year and come after Brohm hard.

You should read more into it. Louisville is paying their old AD 7 mill in a buyout, pitino is suing them for 39 million and Petrinos buyout is 14 mill. Then they’d have to pay 5-7 mill without Brohm after distancing papa John.

With what money?

If you haven’t lived in western Iowa, you just don’t get it. The arrogance of Nebraska fans is unparalleled.

A Nebraska fan could not talk college football with out talking down to you. If I am ever compelled to be a serial killer, I will kill only people who wear that stupid red N.

Aspirations? Sure. After the last 16 years would I think “oh we hired frost.. we are Ohio State!” No! Lol.

Realities. No more:

Signing 210 recruits
Signing prop kids
Being on tv when others are not
Recruiting big 12 states when you aren’t in the big 12

Could Nebraska be Ohio State with Nebraska’s past glory? Sure. If they were located in Columbus and getting the best kids from Ohio

I'm not saying he wasn't a complete D-bag, obviously huge issues, but that aside fans put up with it because he was winning games.

I predicted we’d go 6-6. Purdue fans with a brain know 2019 is the year

Well you guys lost two games due to boneheaded dumbasses, so I would have said better than 6-6 originally. That Rondale kid is a game changer, and with Blough lighting it up like he's Tom Brady you never know.

I still say 6-6 lol. And that would require beating you or MSU .. not easy

The problem with this is that it has been going on for a LONG time now. With every new season and every new coach that is hired. Until Nebraska proves that they CAN "hang with the big dogs of the big 10", to anyone outside of your fan base , yes it seems delusional and tiresome to constantly hear this.
Imagine if Illinois or Rutgers fans acted the same way as Nebraska fans, guaranteed you would find them to be delusional.

Nebraska fans need to realise the current status of their team and accept that. If they can start being more competitive for BIG titles, then at least these expectations might have some substance to back them up and THEN you can make these predictions with less scrutiny.

Silly Husker, Iowa don't or didn't have prop 48, highly questionable character recruits to the level Neb did or a program designed to cover up the garbage the Debsters recruited...unfair question!

I love Omaha. I was born there (was mostly Iowa/North Carolina growing up thought). Huge Bright Eyes fan. I hate Nebraska football so much since they've joined the conference. It was indifference when they were in the mighty Big 12. They were supposed bolster the reputation of the conference and they've instead made our division a joke. Do the people in Nebraska realize that? We don't get to play to Michigan and Ohio State regularly because their sorry asses joined the conference just before the major expansion sweepstakes. They're not a TV contract windfall like Rutgers and Maryland. They were supposed to be a decent football brand and they've betrayed us. What clowns.

I think what Nebraska fans, and admittedly Iowa fans to a lesser degree, fail to understand is that the game has changed substantially, even in the last 15yrs.

The playing field is very even in today's game. Add in the fact that there is social media and it makes recruiting harder. More eyes on one person makes it tough.

There is such a small margin of error anymore.
