Question for the worldly that actually leave the 25 mile radius you live in…

It is truly crazy how often it comes up. Moreso than the weather. Particularly in Europe.

It really shouldn't be a surprise:

- USA is a super power in terms of economic, military and cultural might
- English is pervasive
- Our politics are a show/sport and the rules are unique
- USA/Europe current events: Ukraine/Russia war, USA alignment towards Russia, tariffs, ascendant right wing populism, immigration backlash, co-Pres Musk
- Trump is unique in terms of personality, character and conduct: Absurd statements, criminal cases, cult following, 1/6 insurrection, merchandising

And on and on.

Of course people will be curious, fascinated, disgusted, delighted, all sorts and are sometimes curious in hearing what it's really like from a native.

So, for those that have the ability to leave their immediate area, how are you planning to demonstrate to the people in the corners of the world you’re visiting that you’re not one of “those” piece of shit Americans?
My short answer is "nothing". I sincerely try to be kind to everyone; drive-thru person, Souks merchant, TSA agent, etc., so there's really no need to change my behavior. Heck, I don't even enunciate loudly thinking that will make someone understand English.

Exception: A-hole who cuts me off in traffic or cruises in the fast lane.

Disclaimer: Military Intel Service OPSEC reqs are hard to shake, so I've never walked around dressing like an American anyway.

I think much of the American traveler archetype tends to unfortunately be several things:
1. You don't dress in localish clothes. You will quickly realize that grown men don't wear shorts in foreign countries. When it's hot outside wear linen or chino pants. I ran around in pants while in Thailand and was fine with the heat. Women wearing lemon yellow in a country that wears a lot of bland colors like Germany makes you stick out.
2. You wear heavily branded clothes- Nike, FUBU, sports teams, etc. Shirts with English words make you a target.
3. Rich people from the east coast. These aholes screw it up for everyone. The loudest and rudest people are from NYC and they will let you know it. They don't try to blend in at all. They're the obnoxious aholes that make us look bad. They act that way from home.
4. Not trying to communicate in their language. Use google translate for crying out loud.

As to separating yourself from the orange cheeto

Seriously, I think just talking to people is helpful.
This saved me from typing up a big response. We usually travel outside the US once or twice every year. And basically, we just avoid doing all the things you’ve mentioned above.

What do Military Intel Service OPSEC people dress like?

Americans have traditionally been known as bad visitors. Loud. Obnoxious. Uncaring of other’s culture. Bad shoes.

For those that don’t fit that mold, it’s been tough to overcome our fellow American’s recent transgressions. Unfortunately for us world travelers, our fellow obnoxious American’s antics at home have made it even worse thanks to Agent Orange and the trash that surrounds him.

I’m sure there are a few like me that have multiple trips overseas planned this year. I’ve typically used the method of not flashing I’m American to the general public and if I get into conversations finding a way to tell them I’m not MAGA ASAP.

So, for those that have the ability to leave their immediate area, how are you planning to demonstrate to the people in the corners of the world you’re visiting that you’re not one of “those” piece of shit Americans?
they know what a sheep looks like so you want have to worry...they will be able to tell when you introduce yourself with your pronouns and by looking at your facebook account that reflects the current democrat slogan or flag of the day, and by how confused you look when they ask if you are a man or a woman

Not very helpful, or funny... but I appreciate the effort
Not sure what you're needing/wanting? Should I post a USAF Foreign Travel Briefing?

It would go something like this:

Foreign Travel Briefing – USAF Active Duty (For TS/SCI Cleared Individuals)

1. General Conduct:

  • You represent the U.S. military—act professionally at all times. 👈
  • Avoid discussing work, security matters, or anything classified, even in casual conversations.
  • Assume you are being monitored—electronic surveillance, room bugs, and social engineering tactics are common.
2. Personal Security:
  • Maintain situational awareness; avoid drawing attention to yourself. 👈
  • Stick to secure, well-populated areas and avoid high-crime zones.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited conversations, especially regarding politics, military topics, or personal information.
  • Never accept unknown packages or items from strangers.
3. Attire & Appearance:
  • Dress modestly and respectfully, in accordance with local customs.
  • Avoid clothing with overt U.S. military, American or political insignia. 👈
  • Business casual or neutral civilian attire is best in most environments. 👈
  • No flashy jewelry or expensive items that could make you a target.
4. Digital & Communication Security:
  • Disable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and location services when not in use.
  • Never connect personal or military devices to foreign networks.
  • Be cautious of social media posts that reveal your location or activities.
5. Cultural Awareness & Compliance:
  • Research local customs, laws, and taboos before traveling.
  • Avoid public intoxication, political protests, or any activities that could be misinterpreted.
  • Respect religious practices, dress codes, and local etiquette.
  • Always carry proper identification and be aware of embassy contact information.
6. Reporting Requirements:
  • Report any suspicious activity, approaches, or potential security concerns upon return.
  • Disclose any foreign national contacts that go beyond casual interactions.
Bottom Line: Blend in, stay alert, and protect classified information at all costs. Safe travels.

Seeking affirmation from the land of Robert Mugabe...

Well done Sir!
I know, it must be weird for you to think of people actually traveling around the world and experiencing life. Versus sitting in your trailer court in Podunk iowa. Doing a good job there I see. Don't be afraid to get out and see the world, I know they'll be black people and brown people and yellow people and red people out there, but they won't hurt you. 🤣🤣

You had indicated you don't dress like an American because of your Military Intel Service OPSEC background. I was curious what that sort of background (meaning you) dresses like.

Business casual or neutral civilian attire apparently, but not an American version.

Interesting. And you believe that disguises you from being an American? Shorts?
I didn’t realize I implied I was 'in disguise.' The goal is simply not to draw attention to myself, intentionally or otherwise. This is coupled with appropriate behavior intended not to draw attention to oneself. Would you agree that the photo above (plain shirt/shorts--or slacks depending on the climate) better achieves that goal compared to the photo below:

Are you of the opinion the miliary is incorrect in their training? If so, would you mind providing alternative options?

You can relax. I was just curious what you wear that was influenced by your background and that apparently isn't American. There's no need to consult AI.

The military is incorrect in their training? Providing alternative options???! WTF is that coming from?

Fvckin weirdo.

In the next 6 months I will go to the boonies in northeast Pennsylvania to my cabin, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Florida Keys, Austria, Hungary, and Germany. And truthfully, I worry more about safety in northeast Pennsylvania among the maga cult weirdos than any foreign country. So sad but true.

I figured having AI spit out a Foreign Travel Brief would be faster than me digging one out and linking a power point presentation--served the same purpose.

"Not very helpful, or funny" and "And you believe that disguises you"

My apologies that I felt like you were being intentionally confrontational.

Fvckin weirdo.

Sorry, I didn't identify the attempts at humor.

You gave us some military acronyms and proclaimed that background informs how you dress and it's not American. I was genuinely curious, all I was looing for was a few sentences for how you dress that would describe what you had meant.

I wasn't looking for the opposite of a bunch of pictures, an AI response, a powerpoint or a Foreign Travel Brief. Although, I'm surprised shorts, plain t-shirt and tennis shoes is what is prescribed in those documents, I guess I often dress like an acronym warrior too.

I didn't intend to suggest our military has incorrect training, nor do I have suggestions otherwise, although I think it could be more stylish.

So not a weirdo, just a little ehhhh on the funny stuff...

None of those local yocals are smart enough to figure out who's liberal and who's not. They're busy trying to hit deer with their truck in the middle of the night, find a free bar t-shirt and where their next case of Keystone Light is coming from. Keep up the good work though cletus... one of them is probably your brother and his wife your sister. 😉

Going to Mexico next Saturday for 8 days and this very though has crossed my mind. Rainbow anything, perhaps? Trump with a bullseye on his forehead?

Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City. We go to the former almost every winter. During the first Trump sheet-show, best I saw was "Your on the fun side of Trump's wall"...

Enjoy the food and weather. They are both usually good. When we head to Mexico we usually end up in Isla Mujeres or Mazatlan. Depending on which ocean we want to see.

Both PV and CDMX have fantastic restaurants. Mexico City has 7 Michelin starred restaurants and a bunch of the lower rankings. They even have a 1 star taco stand.

I've traveled all over and have never run into any anti-American sentiment. I'm friendly with people and they are friendly in return.

We’ve earned all that for sure. To your point about talking to people, I’m genuinely curious how forward people will be under Trump 2.0. Since Trump 1.0 you could always tell people were trying to sniff you out in conversation. Polite, but definitely wanting to know if they were talking to Trump Trash or not. I’m wondering if they’ll be more forward under Trump 2.0. I’ll know next month and will report back.
When I was in Germany a few years ago, whenever any of the locals were mention our shit for brains president I just said that I don't like that c***sucker any better than you do. That seemed to pretty much mellow them out.
