Understand your frustration. Great depth of top linebackers this year. The
selectors and award criteria are posted at www.thebutkusaward.com. Jewell
was a finalist last year and was named a semifinalist last month, but just
missed the finalist cut. It's simply the outcome of a 3-2-1 vote of
selectors who study individual football talent for a living. They tend not
to place a lot of weight on stats at the linebacker position because those
stats are influenced by many other things beyond the linebacker's own
talent. Jewell was slowed a bit by injury, which matters in a tight field.
Jewell can still receive write-in votes on the finalist ballot.

Team records don't play a factor. Luke Kuechly won the collegiate trophy at
Boston College with just two wins that season. Kuechly turned out to be one
of the best in the NFL and has won two pro Butkus Award trophies.

"Jewell was slowed a bit by injury, which matters in a tight field. Jewell can still receive write-in votes on the finalist ballot"............but yet being injured as a criteria, Jewell still leads in the categories of import. And, no one can question his tenacity and football IQ. So what's left???

I think it is interesting that Arp's response is what the award does NOT carry much weight.

My question, what IS the criteria then for selecting the winner.

When they make their announcement, there better not be one/any mention of winner's personal stat's justifying or carrying much weight to win the award.

IMHO, this award is "butkus".

Team records don't matter, and stats don't carry a lot of weight. What the hell do they vote on? Were they that offended by his terrible tigerhawk rendering?

I'm waiting for Josey to win another award or two. Then I'll e-mail them. Remind them what a terrible selection process and committee they were this year. They actually cheapened the Butkus award this year. You would have to wonder about their credibility in the future. Did they only consider players on top 25 teams or what?
