Ratstetter: 1/1 for 18 yards, 1 rush 7 yards

I don’t think I have ever seen Kirk grab a player in the sideline and make him stand there to “answer for his crime” like that before. Rastetter gave the coach a quick “sorry about that” and tried to slink away, but Kirk grabbed him by the front of the horse collar and asked him a pretty direct question.

That was clearly NOT in the script and Colten may be residing in the doghouse for a long, Long time.

Imagine Kirk having to explain a fake punt while being ahead 48 - 17 deep in the 4th quarter.

I look at it from the player's perspective. He gets that first down and he is drenched in pussy for the rest of his college life. Kid made the right call.

Nah, he still should have called it to the rest of the team on the field that he might run it if it was there so they would throw a couple blocks for him.

As it was, he embarrassed his coach by making it look to his peers that he can't keep his players in line, and runs an undisciplined program.

I can't imagine a worse way to insult KF than to so visibly ignore his directions on the field of play in a game of this magnitude.

The kid wanted to get in on the fun, got caught up in the moment, and nearly made the first down. Yes, it was a mistake, but it is conceivable that the special teams coach, understanding the situation, would have gone to the kid and told him, "No fakes. Just punt it." Coaches should anticipate a player's mind set, and always be aware of what could go wrong. So since the coaches apparently didn't advise the kid in advance, I would say they are at least as responsible as the young man is.

So it happened. Get over it. And because OSU then scored right away, it gave Iowa a better shot to top the 50-point mark, which was fabulous. So let's not get too holier-than-thou.

The coaches are respnsible for a player who is too ****ing stupid to listen...Snowflake mentality, you run the play that's called Period, end of story..

He almost shotput the ball for a TD except Kluver fell down on his way to the end zone then he got greedy by trying to make a first down run of the punt. Kid thought he was Nathan Stanley out there!

I'm sure Kirk told him don't do that again in a ballgame with the score being what it was. I also think it helps because it tells other coaches just how unpredictable this coaching staff can be. Did I just type that?

I think that after the Swinging Gate play Colten's adrenaline was running a little too high. But if you watch the play, he had that first down except for one OSU player who ran laterally across half the field weaving thru three Hawks (who had no idea Rastetter was running at the time) to tackle Rastetter. If any one of those three Hawks had just chipped that OSU guy even a little, Rastetter gains about 30 on that play.

Risk/reward, Colten. Might want to look that concept up next time. If Kirk allows a next time, that is!

This.

I'm certain that one of the principles of the rugby style punt is that kicker has the option of running on his own, when he sees the defenders backs on that side of the field and he KNOWS he can make it. Obviously his decision was wrong, but it's on the special teams coach or the $50,000/year consultant we brought in to help on special teams to tell the kid to punt no matter what in this situation. Perhaps they did, in which case the doghouse is where the kid will reside for a while, or you use it as a learning experience ( which I suspect, they will.)

Don’t get me wrong - my post wasn’t about Rastetter as much as it was about Kirk grabbing a kid like that. Have never seen him do that.

I should have added that I think it shows just how intense and into the game Kirk was, even though the outcome was no longer in doubt.

Rastetter shouldn't be on the field at all. He cost Iowa big in a couple games earlier in the year and his average is junk. Gersonde is the buy that should always be punting hands down. The competition between these two is not close at all
