From The Bleacher Report:

Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison made an in-home visit to 3-star defensive end Daishon Neal, hoping he could flip the Nebraska commit to the Wolverines. For a while, it seemed like he was making good progress.
And then he said something he shouldn't have.
According to Neal's father, Abraham Hoskins Jr., Mattison insulted his son by saying he couldn't get into Michigan without football-the intimation being that under normal circumstances, Neal is either too poor or too dumb (or both) to meet the admission criteria.
Hoskins relayed the story on Omaha's 1620 The Zone radio station, saying that after hearing the perceived insult, he kicked Mattison out of the house. Nick Baumgarder of MLive.com transcribed his comments:
Michigan was a powerhouse, they came in and they stormed us, they made one bad statement and it was over. They said without football, Daishon wouldn't be able to go to Michigan. Like we couldn't afford to send him there, or that we couldn't get him in academically.
Once he said that, we pretty much escorted him out of the house.
[They] basically tried to call me stupid in front of my face.
I was leaning towards Michigan, with their academics, stats, everything. What if he never played again in his life, that degree could have taken him anywhere.[/QUOTE]

Missed it. My bad then. A demerit for me and no recess period after lunch tomorrow.

They did manage to flip a top P/S Quarterback from New Mexico that committed to Tejas.

Gentry is 6'7" and has a strong arm. He was in Rival's # 10 Q/B back when he was leaning towards coming to Tennessee. Pretty much a done deal until Tectus offered. After he committed to Tejas, Rivals jumped him up to their # 4 PS Q/B.

Have to say I'm impressed that they were able to snatch him from Tectus.

How do you know it is the truth?
What makes you say it isn't? Aren't people always saying football schools make exceptions for entrance that non-athletes would not get?

For a general student population a 3.1 GPA isn't getting you into Michigan. If he could be admitted under a minority, disability, or some other type of program then there may have been alternatives other than football. The only experience I had was my son getting put on a waiting list with a 3.8, 33 ACT and 32 college credits at graduation from high school. So I feel somewhat confident that a 3.1 GPA wouldn't get him in without football

We may not, but it seems likely a Michigan the Michigan recruiter would. Coach was probably having a laffer at the joke that is the value of a degree from UNL, the worst school in the B10, and an academic embarrassment to us all.

If he was getting in for academics the would of sent the chancellor or the Dean of the College of Law to his house not the head football coach.

I mean, if you can't figure out why that's not really an appropriate thing to say at the time of recruitment when you're trying to lure him into your school, then I don't know what to tell you.

Everyone knows Nebby will take anyone that they think will help them win.

Pretty stupid of Mich to play that card to try and sell a recruit that was already favoring you.

Isn't that what Michigan was saying? You aren't smart enough to come here, but since you play football, we will let you in. Does Iowa not do the same? Don't act like Nebraska is K-State.

Greg Mattison is a highly respected coach. I highly doubt he would insult a recruit or his family. Maybe this story isn't quite accurate.

What is wrong with letting a recruit know that football has provided him the opportunity to attend a college he would not be able to if he was a regular student? But the kid and his family decided to act like babies

he didnt. we are hearing they didnt even throw mattison out of the house. that neal actually walked mattison out to his car when he left. he told the kid because he is good at football he has an opportunity to go to school at michigan. that kids with a 4.0 gpa dont get into michigan every year. looks like they wanted attention. they twisted what he said and then lied about throwing him out of the house
