Watched the game against Gonzaga again. Joel Ayayi was a beast going after loose balls and rebounds. The Young man is 6'5" tall but had 19 rebounds. How can that happen?
He wanted the ball more, had more desire, was quicker and a great leaper. He was all over the court. I felt he was the MVP in that game for Gonzaga.

Seldom do I see our players diving for loose balls and or crashing the boards. Nobody is going to hand them a title, they have to earn it.

I felt the two Joe's played hard, of course Garza always does. Fran needs to move Nunge under the basket and less on the perimeter. I think JBo should come off the bench, he can't match up against quicker guards.

I think our most athletic starting five and most productive would be Garza, Wieskamp, Fredrick, Joe T and Keegan Murray. Certainly our rebounding would be better. Substituting in JBo for perimeter shooting and Nunge inside and McCaffrey at point for stability. Very good 8 players. PMac needs to earn his minutes, shooting too much, has shown promise on the point of the press.

Just my two cents.

In another thread, I wrote that Tom Davis teams were known for great rebounding, even when playing zone defense. They often led the nation in rebounding margin.

I asked Kenyon Murray (aka, @PHawkKenyon) what Dr Tom did that led to that rebounding success.

Here was his reply:

In regards to what we did, we drilled "boxing out" EVERY day. He had a drill where we had to keep our hands behind our backs, use our legs hips and butt to box out the offense and the ball had to bounce at least one time before we could secure it with our hands. Because of drills like that, when we were allowed to use everything, we were a pretty good rebounding team. ;)
