Recruit receives offer from ISU, confuses them with Iowa

He messed up the B1G part. He admitted as such. But his high school team is nicknamed the hawks, hence # hawks pride.

Something like this happened when I was at ISU in the '60s. There was a gymnast from out East someplace who was recruited by Iowa, came out to go to school, got confused and ended up in Ames, became an NCAA champion. I'm thinking it was either Jerry Fontana or Jim Jackson, not sure.

And that is the reason you don't remember him and none of us have heard of either one of them

The memories of my family outings are still a source of strength to me. I remember we'd all pile into the car - I forget what kind it was - and drive and drive. I'm not sure where we'd go, but I think there were some trees there. The smell of something was strong in the air as we played whatever sport we played. I remember a bigger, older guy we called "Dad." We'd eat some stuff, or not, and then I think we went home. I guess some things never leave you.

Last year we drove across country. We switched on the driving every half mile. We had one cassette tape to listen to the whole trip. I can't remember what it was. - Steven Wright.

Did he apply to the wrong school or drive to the wrong city?

His first words upon arriving were "This will be my last blind date."

IIRC he went to the wrong city. Although I just checked with my buddy, who was a swimmer at the time and knew most of the jocks, and he's never heard the story. So maybe I dreamed it. But I don't think so. It wouldn't have been Fontana, though. He was from Chicago, and presumably would have known where Iowa was.

ISU's program was very new then, may have been a club sport. This was at the time Glen Gailis was the star at Iowa (still rings were his specialty....they called them "still rings" then because there had been a "flying rings" event at one time).

Both teams were pretty good. Iowa won the NCAA title in '69, and ISU won it in '71, '73 and '74.

Geez, I'd hate to stop telling that story. Damn.

I can't imagine that somebody who never applied so obviously wasn't accepted could just walk in and start taking classes and competing in sports.

No, on third or fourth thought --- assuming I didn't dream the whole thing -- it would make more sense if he was going to visit Iowa and ended up at Iowa State by mistake, especially if it was an unofficial visit, then decided to go there.

But in any case, my original story almost certainly wasn't accurate.
