Hopefully the link works - but it's a pic on twitter of James Franklin with a recruit who we have no chance with (but who is seemingly decked out in Iowa gear nonetheless).

Linky

His high school gear, team.

Still, would think they might want to avoid the comparison in a recruiting pic.

Evidently they disregard copyright, or have received permission from numerous entities to use their logos.

Here is their "official"(?) logo which isn't familiar:

But, then you have this:

And this vs this:

They've also got this one:

Weird branding effort there, even for a high school.

University of Miami went after LaPorte City Union after Matt Pipho committed to Miami from LaPorte City or at least they had talked about it happening because Union uses the Miami "U"

If the kid signs with PSU, I'm planning to send a note to the UI Trademark office to notify them of this school's ripping off of the Tigerhawk. ;)

OMG !!! The Hawk on the kid and dads t-shirts is a dead ringer for the Tiger Hawk ..... that can't be Legal.

On another note, Taylor Swift is trying to copyright "1989".... We already have the Birthday song copyrighted. This stuff is getting ridiculous, I can see an issue with another University, but a high school all the way across the country. Couldn't care less.

Unauthorized use of a trademark without objection by the holder can be seen in the eyes of the law as the same thing as waiving those claims. Allowing something like that to happen would be a mistake with tens of zeros on it for the university.

You have to protect the trademark so you don't lose it. My guess is UI license didn't know, now with this thread that high school will get a nice cease and desist letter.

Either that or the high school is already paying the U of Iowa a small usage fee.

Exactly - if you have a TM - you can not ignore in one case and then try and uphold it in another case.

So wait, Urbandale got rid of the Jayhawk but them went out and ripped off Miami with the U on their helmets.... You would think you would learn a lesson.

Ha! You can almost see the pixel artifacts from where they moved the gap and raised the base in Microsoft Paint.

This could be the case. Iowa did go after some high schools several years ago, IIRC. The point isn't use, the point is licensing. If the HS played ball, Iowa may have worked out a deal to allow them to use it for a usage fee.

Screw the usage fee thing. Sign a contract that says Iowa gets right of first refusal to all highly recruited athletes the school produces. This Nixon kid is an ESPN 300 recruit. U of IA's marketing arm needs to introduce our logo to at least one school in every state with this arrangement.
