I saw this posted at Northwestern's rivals page, and thought it was kind of interesting. Looks like Jim Harbaugh
will offer just about any player that carries a twig and two berries between his legs. :) Is that many offers good, or does it cheapen the offers because everyone has one?

Northwestern - 77 offers; 14 commits; 18.2% commitment rate
Iowa - 97 offers; 10 commits; 10.3% commitment rate
Ohio State - 131 offers; 13 commits; 9.9% commitment rate
Wisconsin - 142 offers; 10 commits; 7.0% commitment rate
Michigan State - 161 offers; 9 commits; 5.6% commitment rate
Penn State - 166 offers; 8 commits; 4.8% commitment rate
Michigan - 285 offers; 13 commits; 4.6% commitment rate
Nebraska - 239 offers; 9 commits; 3.8% commitment rate

ffer to any football player that has a twig and two berries between his legs. :)
lol.
Interesting stats. I wonder, though, how this is affected by the number of spots available to each program this year. I recall people saying that Iowa only has 15 or so scholly spots this year (as opposed to the usual 25) due to the current high number of players on scholarship.

Also, I thought Iowa offered twice as many players last year, which was also a much bigger recruiting class.

Yeah, I was thinking that, too. I remember last year at this time Iowa had well over 100 offers out with a much bigger class to fill. Seems like they're being more selective this year with the smaller class. Last year, Kleinow and Martin probably would have had offers at this point.

I don't think offering a bunch of kids is a knock on Mich or Nebraska at all. It means they are trying! I see few offers more as a knock on us. Harbaugh is a tireless recruiter and has been to something like 20 satellite camps this summer. Kirk, on the other hand, has been to 1, and it was for girls football. While Kirk is home in his rocking chair, Harbaugh is in Florida, Mississippi, then swinging over to California to show up at a kid's prom or have a sleep over. Meanwhile, we are satisfied that most of Iowa's commits come from a 2 hr radius of Iowa City.

I commend the schools who are out there pounding the pavement and making offers to the kids they like. You get no prize for offering the least amount of guys and seeing the least amount of guys in camps. Frankly, I wish we had guys on the staff who were out there all the time scouting kids and making offers.

Also, it is said that we will take at least 20 kids in this class, as 2 more transferred out of the program this week. Not a small class.

It's partly due to the amount of spots they have to fill. Iowa had a lot more offers last year. But if you also remember Michigan accepted several commits from kids only to later push them out of the class for higher ranked recruits

First, no to most of that.
Second, the class won't be 20 kids. Those two scholarships will be filled by walkons that have earned them. They have 12 scholarship seniors I believe. and Noah Clayberg counts against next years class so right now they have 11 scholarships to give out. They would have to lose 9 kids to

Your probably right, Iowa has a limited number to give out so they are being more selective. I can see the possibility of Michigan and Nebraska having to pull several commit's offers once the scholly's run out.

I don't think it has ever been said this class will be 20 or more.

With the 2016 recruiting class in the fold - Iowa has around 82 scholarships filled. Perhaps another has been filled by a walk-on that I don't know about.

Iowa has 13 graduating seniors after 2016 (Beathard, Kittle, Croston, Ward, Keppy, Daniels, VandeBerg, McCarron, Johnson, Ekakitie, Gair, King, Mabin). Sometimes 4 year juniors leave early - I could perhaps see Gressel doing that. We could get hit by a little bit more attrition ... I could potentially see Outsey leave (I hope not), Slater might have had grade issues (I hope he gets those taken care of), and its not uncommon for a FR to abandon ship after a year.

There are a number of walk-ons who could put themselves in contention to earn a scholarship - either sooner or later. Hulett and Kulick are two could potentially put themselves in position to garner scholarships on the sooner side of the spectrum. Recinos or one of the other kickers could earn one after the season. Brinks, Ferguson, and Gervase are also guys who could legitimately work themselves into that conversation too.

Thus, while superficially the scholarship count looks like it could be as high as 20 ... it's much more likely to be in the ball-park of 16 or 17.

The Hawks currently have 9 commits + 1 greyshirt ... and sit very well with quite a large number of other recruits. My guess is that by early July, Iowa will be up to around having 13 or 14 commits. They'll probably get one or two more before the start of the season ... and then they'll only have 1 or 2 more spots to fill by signing day.

Given the above scenario, there isn't much surprise why the Hawks don't have quite so many offers out.

I will go on record now and say that the minimum size of this class will be 17, but I would wager it will be 18-20.

We have been in similar positions in the past and only 1 x have they taken less than 20. They are in on some talent this year and are risky enough to back off of many targets to chase that higher talent. Moreover, they have grown unafraid of oversigning and finding the room after national signing day. They will not give up the momentum if they have great recruits that want on the bus!

lol, ok.

Should we presume that the first 30 (of 285) offers accepted will be honored by Michigan?

An offer means something at Iowa.

Theres a difference between "offers" and "commitable offers" as they say. For example, they could have offered 10 Linebackers and only had space for one or two. Then when they filled the spot they told the rest the spot was taken. The sites are still going to say those players have offers but it really does not mean much once a coach backs off

Ooops...Outsey is out. Case in point, making room already.
It will not be that small of a class.

I see the large number of offers by Michigan and Nebbie as a sign of poor research. Kind of a " Let's throw a bunch of stuff against the wall and see if anything sticks" strategy.

Mr hawk reporting on TOS that the staff could be considering making at least one new offer at some point during the next four weeks

Outsey is transferring....
Darn it ... I wish he would have been happier with the position move. He would have developed great at TE. Oh well ...

I knew it was a definite possibility ... I just didn't know how close he was to making the final decision.

Michigan is also consistently going after loads of 4 and 5 star guys, we tend to be more selective in which of those guys we chase after. We have more 2 and 3 star sleepers. It is still a fairly impressive stat, but our philosophy is more quality/right fit/guys we can sign vs swing for fences on blue chip list.
Part of the pattern displayed by Michigan and Nebraska is that they're trying to bank on their name ... they're willing to cast the line out to more 4 and 5 star guys because their tradition is enough to keep guys (at least somewhat) interested.

absolutely, they are leveraging their brand as best they can and can take a bit more of a shotgun approach to recruiting - we dont have the same luxury.

Yep, we totally don't have that luxury. Instead, we seem to focus more on guys who are perceived as being great "program fits" ... both in terms of cultural fits and schematic fits.

Another spot just opened up for the 2017 class with the announcement that TE Jamar Outsey is leaving the program.
