For a second straight offseason, Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White will be in play for both head coaching and coordinator roles at other power conference schools.
247 Sports reported Sunday that Florida State is interested in White taking the defensive coordinator job in Tallahassee; the World-Herald, through a source, confirmed FSU’s interest. Florida State coach Mike Norvell fired his defensive coordinator, Adam Fuller, Nov. 10. In December ’23, Fuller signed a three-year contract for a $2 million salary.
Although Norvell and White have never worked together, each spent several seasons at Arizona State. Last offseason, White turned down an opportunity at the USC defensive coordinator job and got looks at both the San Diego State and UCLA head coaching jobs.
Choosing to stay with NU, White got a salary bump to $1.6 million per year.
This cycle, jobs at North Carolina, West Virginia, Purdue, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Fresno State and Tulsa, among others, are open. Temple, as of Sunday night filled its vacancy with Sam Houston State coach K.C. Keeler., who won a FCS national title.
NU coach Matt Rhule stumped for White to get a head coaching while also reiterating that White should be choosy with offers.
"Now, I told Tony, don't take the wrong one,” Rhule said in November ’23. “Don't take the wrong job now. Don't take a job with no resources. Don't take a job with no support. Don't take a job without a great recruiting base."
White returned to NU with the goal of coordinating “the No. 1 defense in the country.” It seemed possible given so many standouts returned from a 2023 defense that ranked 13th in points per game allowed and 11th in yards per game allowed.
In 2024, Nebraska currently ranks 19th in both categories. Even if NU didn’t reach No. 1 in either category — Ohio State currently leads both — it is another top-20 year for a defense that hadn’t been this consistent since the 2009/2010 seasons.
NU’s defense will undergo a major overhaul after a bowl game, though. Starters/key contributors Ty Robinson, Nash Hutmacher, MJ Sherman, John Bullock, DeShon Singleton, Isaac Gifford, Tommi Hill and Javin Wright have either exhausted their eligibility or plan to leave for the NFL Draft.
