Report: Iowa vs Creighton in 2023 Gavitt Games

I think we played on the road in the 2022 Gavitt Games.
We did, but due to it being a weird schedule with not everyone playing each year and it needing to be 4 BE hosts and 4 Big Ten hosts this happens lots of years where a team or 2 is hosting or away back-to-back. Just looking at last year's lineup and this upcoming year's lineup Marquette and Butler is in the same boat.

Why are we playing an away game at Creighton?
It's the Gavitt Games, so Iowa doesn't really get a say. The contract is owned by Fox, so I assume that they decide the matchups for these things. Creighton is a good basketball program and projects to be good again next year--an away game ultimately helps Iowa's SOS in the long run.

Not sure why defending national champion UConn, Seton Hall and DePaul are not participating....

You’re giving up a home game, home game revenue, and walking into a buzz saw with a “L” written all over it.

No upside at all.

UCONN wasn't in the BE when the contract was signed which is why they have never participated in the event. The contract was an 8 year deal where each BE team played 6 times and each BT team played at least 4. This is the last year of the contract, so we will see if it gets renewed next season to be the full 11 BE teams each year.

And this attitude is why these non-conference "challenges" are largely going away. I think Iowa will likely be scheduling 5-6 non-conference "buy games" to fill out there schedule + the matchup in Des Moines where I'm assuming they are getting a large percentage of the revenue from. I think they will be just fine playing 2 true road games.

For a pure NCAA tournament resume perspective this game is all upside and largely no downside. It's going to be a Q1A road game. If Iowa catches Creighton on a bad day or dare I say Iowa outplays them and wins it's a massive resume boost for the tournament. If Iowa loses, well it's largely to be expected and does nothing to hurt them.

Contracts can always be amended. UConn rejoined the Big East in July, 2020, so they could have been playing in this event in 2021 and 2022 and this year could have been their 3rd year of participation. The challenge was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.

And having 2 (now 3, with UConn in 2020) idle Big East teams and 6 idle Big 10 teams has never made much sense.

But that's just my opinion.

Yep. It would be so much better to be playing North Carolina A & T in front of 5K on a Thursday night at Carver. Really gets the juices flowing. You’re actually mad about us going to play a top 10 program in a challenge like this? Really? There is literally zero downside.

I agree that it's dumb to not include everyone--I know UCONN was apparently hopeful to be involved this year since this is technically the makeup year of the contract from 2020, but for whatever reason that didn't happen.

Yeah, I don't know the reasoning for why there was not full (10 team then and 11 team now) Big East participation from the beginning. Probably because of TV....

Do the Gavitt Games set this up by past finish, projected finish, or regionally? Other than Wisky v Prov it looks like teams are playing neighbors (sort/kind of).

I guess this is all about accepting reality. Iowa basketball is at the point where we are the ones having to travel to play reputable programs.

A good reality check for Iowa.

I assume it's a rotation for which teams are playing and then determining which 4 BT school host and which 4 BE teams host and then deciding matchups based on that pool. I believe for most of these conference challenges it's just TV networks that decide. And TV execs are likely taking all 3 of the things you mentioned into account.

We’re a solid program. Make the tournament almost every year. Anywhere from a top 15-30 team. Not sure why you’re making such a big deal on this. Creighton is Power 6 in basketball and obviously a Big East team just won the entire thing last year. Not an indictment against Iowa at all.

Going to be a hot ticket thats for sure. I plan on going if the tickets dont sell out like Des Moines did. Creighton has alot of season ticket holders so may be limeted tickets but arena they play in is large and nice. Would love it if Iowa would build a B-ball arena like that but wont anytime soon with the wrestling addition i think we are stuck with Carver for a very long time.

We need to build a smaller arena not an 18K arena like Creighton. 10K would be ideal.

I would take that in a heartbeat but will not happen for a long time with all the recent upgrades.

During this past season, during an interview, Fran told Dolph another renovation was coming to CHA. Dolph did not follow up with questions on when it would happen, what improvements would be made, etc.

I think this is a result of the better teams in both conferences not wanting to share the tv wealth and tv not wanting to air bottom teams slugging it out with smaller audiences.

Your probably also complain about our strength of schedule when it comes to the NCAA tournament?

So many complain about the level of Iowa's preconference foes. I guess this only applies if we play middling teams at Carver. The team had better get used to playing tough opponents on their floors as we are going to get a fistful come conference time.
