Repub Rep Crenshaw with a ludicrous comment about Nato

I thought Rep Dan Crenshaw has been one of the more centrist type Pols during the Biden admin. He doesnt seem to have wildly crazy ideas and he even gets on his own party for their crazy ideas.

But I just heard him say a wildly mis-informed statement about Nato on Face the Nation. He is in Europe with the summit and he is ex-navy seal so he knows the military. Any real NATO buffs on here who can add some facts?

He said Nato is purely defensive and doesnt have a military forces. The US has military trials, manuevers, and plans for defense yes. This is a stupid statement.

They have a combined military that is lead by a Nato Chief Allied Commander. They have plans in place, those countries all have their own militaries that can coalesce into a Nato fighting force in very little time to fight back aggression. We know Britain, France, Germany, Poland and other countries have their own militaries.

We know the history of the Finns fighting the USSR to a stalemate. I would reckon that the combined militaries of Poland, Germany, Britain, and France even without the US could pretty much lay waste to a Russia invasion through Belarus. The Russians cant even take down poor, little Ukraine.

I sure hope the Trump Admin is not the same old stupid russia lovers they were in 2015-2020.

The last week has shown that your fears expressed in last sentence have already come true, and they will be far worse and more overt than 2015-2020.

He didnt say that and if you look it up Nato countries were increasing their defense amounts toward their militaries late in Trump1 and more importantly by 10%+ after Russia invaded Ukraine. Plus Sweden and Finland is in Nato now so they have already bolstered their militaries.

It was a bad statement by Crenshaw. Nato could jump in to a fight with combined air forces that have 100's if not a 1000 modern fighter jets and bombers alone that would lay waste to any soviet air attacks and ground forces. Putin knows it know as his forces cant beat the Ukrainians

It is an articulation argument against what he said and not a factual argument. NATO does not have an offensive role in that NATO won’t be invading a country under the current treaty. That’s not a defined role. However, war involves offensive operations. NATO can absolutely go on offense to destroy an army. It isn’t purely defensive.

It also does not have a standing army. There is a command structure but the members of that structure have been temporarily loaned to nato. Just like troops would be loaned to nato.

Good thoughts but we cant have only nukes as a European theater deterent. There has to be a great Nato presence and quick military force that is non-nuke.

But you are right as far as Russia being a poor military, or average at best, at the start of the Ukraine war and now the Russian military us exhausted and very depleted.

Zelensky and Europe should go full bore on not giving in to Putin and even Trump in any peace or cease fire talks. The war is close to Europe and they need to be behind Ukraine.

Putin demanding no Nato membership for Ukraine should be a total 100% non-starter in negotiations.

PS It would be great to get Orban out of hungary and replaced by a real democracy to totally solidify Nato and the EU

Trump is fully in with Russia and will side with Russia over the EU. It's pretty apparent this is the direction this admin is taking and they just don't give a ****. It's amazing to think that he's actually siding with Putin.
