Arriving Friday. From CHA, looks like everything is north and west. Any recommendations? Staying at Heartland Inn.

Back pocket is a good call. Kind of depends how far you want to travel, ie. Solon's Big Grove Brewery is great but there are a lot of local choices.

Can we just pin this to the top of the page?

I'm a Wig and Pen guy but the Vine is good as well. Both with have wrestling fans.I agree, parking might be tough and slow by CHA but usually you can park in the overflow and walk.

If you don't mind walking, then 1.5 miles is downtown Iowa City and that opens up a lot. Otherwise, you can always grab a cab to the Arena, might have to call one to get back.

Anyway, downtown Iowa City. Where to start? Short's Burger and Shine, The Airliner, Bo James, Mondos, Mickeys...

A little further is Pagliai's Pizza, Hamburg Inn#2, The BlueBird Diner.

Fyi, Vall Jr. and I will usually order a Pagliai's for the drive home or stop at Red's Ale House / Big Grove.

Short's, Paglias, Jack's rib shack, Augusta's, Monica's, or Carl and Ernie's to name a few local spots.

I will be arriving friday night after a junior high meet. We are staying at the casino in riverside. Do they do cabs from the casino to Carver?

Great list already, guys...keep 'em coming. I know Heartland is about a mile, and within walking distance. If we decide to go back between sessions, any restaurants closer to our hotel.

wig&pen, the Vine, Sparty's, and Old Chicago, are all between your hotel and Carver. I'd say heartland is 1/2 mile from Carver

Wig and Pen, Vine, Old Chicago, Cactus (All walking distance to CHA and Heartland Inn)

Stella- (Next to Kinnick, but can walk)

Short's, Pagliai's, Bo James- Downtown Iowa City

Red's Ale House North Liberty

Any chain you want out by Coral Ridge Mall

Ok thanks so that would be about 7 blocks and these places are along the way cool. If it is cold should be able to get a cab from Heartland to Carver I would think. Thanks for the information.

Cab from casino to Carver is approximately 20 miles, would be pretty pricey I would guess and may not be convenient. Might be cheaper to drive (if you have a car available) and park in a ramp ($1 per hour) or even some side streets in the area.

Downtown is definitely walkable and also have a bus service that circles through campus. There are buses that go both directions around campus so you can just grab the next bus and go whichever direction (they are called red route and blue route, even though they should be the gold route and black route if you know what I mean) I believe it is on 30 minute service loop.

Downtown also has Joe's Place and Buffalo Wild Wings as possible eats and drinks.

Anyone driving in through Coralville will also see a few other restaurants coming in as well so keep your eyes open.

So where are the Goofer fans staying?

Iowa River Power/Flanigan's is north of your hotel on 1st Ave. Walkable. Bandana's BBQ isn't too bad, and that's a bit farther north. There's also Perkins, McD's, Burger King, Panera, and Hardee's along 1st Ave. Fieldhouse is across from IRP/Flanigan's...townie bar with okay food.

30 Hop is a better option than Backpocket for food and especially beer...same general area (Iowa River Landing, just off I-80 and 1st Ave).

Twelve01 is still on 1st Ave just across the interstate...just opened not too long ago so I haven't had a chance to see how they are.

Pullman's downtown. The Mill is on the edge of downtown and they have a good breakfast (get the beermosas).

Another place close to the Heartland Inn is the Barber Shop. It's a local burger place right behind the Hardee's. Think they might do breakfast, too.

I forgot about that place. They do have breakfast - simple menu, but I've heard good things.

There was a "Sambo's" out there back in the day, but then, well, ummm, it wasn't "politically correct" and was "frowned upon" and it closed, thus ending my favorite place to stop for pancakes after 10:30 Mass on Sunday. We started going to "Hungry Heffer*" instead and I switched to hamburgers.

Iowa River Power Co is / was nice as well. Anyway, apparently, Wendy's buying at McDs after the first round...

* It was a cheap steakhouse. WWDM- was there like a "Sizzling Steak House down on Riverside by the old Fin and Feather and Twin Image?
