RIP Billy Graham

The scourage of modern America religion

I'm not a big fan of his preaching, but while imperfect, he did little to damage Christianity or America. His son is a far better example of a scourge of which you speak, so are the Falwells, Osteen, Robertson, etc.

Not my theological cup of tea but I have to respect that he figured out at mixing his religion with politics was a bad idea.

Agree, and kind of like the left and science?
this looks made up to me

The message of Billy Graham was clear. People
cannot live their life without God. Faith in Jesus
Christ empowers a person to have a purpose in
this life as they make their journey toward heaven.

Franklin Graham was never blessed as a dynamic
speaker like his father. There will only be one Billy
Graham. His children have a tremendous challenge
to live up to his standards. To preach the Good
News of Jesus Christ is a calling not bestowed on
just anyone. Appreciate the ministry of Billy Graham
as a tremendous gift from God.

I can appreciate that Billy Graham left big shoes to fill, but there's a LOT of real estate between Billy & Franklin.

Billy Graham had humility, integrity, and compassion.
Those three qualities enabled him to relate to people
around the world. He was one of the spiritual leaders
of Christianity in the 20th century.

It's not

If you read the whole article he also reconfirmed his stance in 2011 saying to Christiantiy Today that if he had anything to do over again he would have steered clear of politics.

His position on Jews and Gay people is documented.

He made 25 million from donations. Its a drop in the bucket compared to Joel and others and I think all preachers should live a modest lifestyle similar to a Catholic Priest. Im sure Jesus would have wanted it this way?

He repented of his position on Jews.

How did he make his 25 million? Based on earlier profiles it seems to indicate he took a very modest salary on the preaching thing. I'm ok if you are a preacher and you write a book and that book makes you rich. Just don't take a massive salary from your congregation, ask your congregation to provide you with a private jet, or tell your congregation that you are wealthy simply because God favors you more or you have more faith.

He wrote 33 books and ran a multi million dollar non profit.

While the link can't provide exactly a basis for how he earned his money, given the evidence it presents it sounds like the majority of that came from selling books. The biggest thing that stands out is in 2005 he was earning 450k a year for running his non profit. But I would submit to you that a lot of people who are in charge of non profits of that size earn a lot more.

I don't see a lot of issue in his wealth there.

Only when they released the tapes and he couldn't deny his statements anymore.

Again. He was a wonderful human compared to me.

I know, I'm pointing this out to someone who is basically being very negative about his legacy.

I don't think it's fair to hold that against him.

When discussing today's wealthy preachers, he is less greedy than the others. I will give you that.

Preaching for dollars is upsetting to me.

Preaching for a salary to live on is fine.

Preaching to get wealthy isn't.

However I would say writing books and getting wealthy is fine.

All indications are that the guy's wealth likely came from writing books, not from preaching.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A statue of the late Rev. Billy Graham set to stand inside the U.S. Capitol to represent North Carolina will be unveiled next week in a ceremony.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, other congressional members and the family of the Charlotte-born evangelist are expected to attend unveiling of the 7-foot (2.1-meter) tall bronze statue on Thursday in the National Statuary Hall, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association said in a news release.

The North Carolina General Assembly approved legislation in 2015 asking a congressional committee to eventually approve a likeness of Graham for display in the hall. Rules say a person’s statue can only be installed posthumously. Graham, who lived most of his adult life in Montreat, died in 2018 at age 99.

Each state gets two statues. The Graham statue will replace one of early 20th-century Gov. Charles Aycock, who, while known as an education advocate, has fallen from favor because of his ties to the white supremacy movement at the time.

I was involved in projects at BGEA and Samaritan's Purse around 2010 I think. The facilities are first class. Both feature high end employee dining rooms, with grand pianos, and a pianist playing during dining hours. Both have high level executive chefs and food. Employee meals are subsidized, which is intended to keep employees from leaving for lunch as much as possible. Both facilities have a high level of security, especially at Samaritan's Purse.

When Billy's health issues became to severe, and Franklin started taking over BGEA, there was some serious morale issues at BGEA. They didn't like the idea of Franklin running things.
