definitely feel for howard. in terms of the team race, i don't think this has an impact. i didn't see him scoring more than a point or two. hurts them for duals though.

Might work out well for him if he gets healthy. An extra year of eligibility after the weight clears out a lot.

Feel for him, he seems like a guy you love when he’s on your team and hate when he’s not.

Anyone at his level has put a ton of time and effort into the sport and I hate to see them miss opportunities to compete.

Hoping for a full and speedy recovery.

It’s always a shame when young men deal with injuries, but I can’t help but think a bit of karma may be in play here. I’ve heard more than a few less than glowing stories about him.

I think Steen will be pretty dang tough…. Dare I say they may be better off with him than Howard?

Seems unlikely. As a true frosh, Howard finished 6th in the B1G and went 2-2 at nationals. And that was a couple years ago. Steen went 5-5 as a true frosh last year, wrestling in weak butt opens.

I suppose I should’ve added all things considered at the end of my post…. He’s a kid that is going to work his ass off and make gains quickly. Certainly not as polished as Howard coming out, but I love his upside. And history shows what happens when you become the man in the room in Happy Valley. Just my opinion from a distance. I know there was a couple guys in IC that really liked Steen. Reminds me a bit of McD.

What does the history for wrestlers like Steen amount to in Happy Valley? Asking for a friend.

Maybe he’ll grow by leaps and bounds but in the B10 he’s got
# 1 Lee Iowa
#3 McKee Minnesota
# 4 Augustino Northwestern
#7 Barnett Wisconsin
#10 Ramos Purdue
#12 Heinselman Ohio St
#17 Shawver Rutgers
#19 Cardani Illinois
#24 Cronin Indiana

Hes gotta win a couple upsets just to qualify for nationals. I don’t think Howard was scoring much more than Steen. 125 is pretty weak in Happy Valley lately.

Not a big hit for the F*** state boys, but the curse of 25 continues! He could have brought them a few points possible at Nationals. Many more Wrestlers will rise and fall. Lets just hope this is the HAWKS year to 1) stay healthy and 2) have a couple of our young guns break out!!!!

I concur with everyone's comments that I wish Howard well. It stinks that he has had to battle multiple years of injuries. I hope he can get back on the mat soon.

As far as impact, there is a reason he was the starter and he was a top recruit out of high school. I did consider him an All-American threat. Steen has not showed me that yet, but we will see.

The Bergen Catholic High School grad chose PSU over Iowa and Michigan and he carries on a tradition of successful athletes from the North New Jersey school, which may sound familiar to Nittany Lion faithful as two-time NCAA Champion from Rutgers and Michigan, Nick Suriano, who was with Penn State for one year, also attended the same school.

Howard also has significant International experience, winning the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. He has also made three Cadet World Teams, placing 5th in his best performance.

Howard brings Penn State its first highly-ranked 125-lb recruit since the days of NCAA Champion and three-time finalist Nico Megaludis.

Agreed. As a true freshman, he looked pretty good in 2021. He beat Heinselman, Gutierrez, and Ragusin. He had a freshman campaign like Ayala. Ayala had more matches and an injury that hampered him but he had some good wins and close losses as well.

125 at Rutgers is going to be interesting ..Shawver won a bout at NCAA tourny last season and has been getting better every year. Super RS frosh Dean Peterson is right there also. Both faced Pat Glory from Princeton this weekend at Princeton Open...Peterson lost to returning NCAA Runner up Glory 6-5 in semi...Shawver lost 11-9 in final..I think either one of these guys can possibly be B1G Finalist..Shawver beat McKee from Minnesota at B1G Tournament last year

I certainly don’t know much about any of that but Howard was a big recruit who had some nice wins 2 years ago while Steen was more of a room guy.

steen is not good. he wasn't that good in high school and he was bad last year. howard destroyed him at the us open this summer. he also got dominated by jesuroga and figueroa at trials.

not every guy at penn state ascends, especially room guys. look at barraclough, who has been better than steen. still not good. look at hildebrandt last year. he was worse.

just look at what the penn state fans think of him. not a single one is predicting him to make a jump. and they always assume cael gets the most out of guys. they're talking about transfers and recruits.
