Here are a couple of things that I learned from going to the Rose Bowl 2 years ago (MSU vs. Stanford).
Two years ago MSU sent approximately 60,000 fans to the Rose Bowl. A lot of that is because of pent up demand caused by not having been there since 1988. Iowa, I'm sure, is in the same position. Now, the Rose Bowl no longer seats over 100,000. However, even with this demand here I found tickets relatively easy to come by. You might have to be creative. It helps that Stanford is relatively small and not all that interested in football. It will help you also that they were just there 2 years ago. Many people here got their tickets directly from Stanford. If you look at some of the pictures of that game you will see large green areas in the Stanford section. You may have to donate some money to Stanford to buy their tickets. Tickets directly from the University are always at face value but often are not the best of seats. At least it helps the school to sell out their allotment.
While tickets should be easy, flights and hotels can be a problem. Make your reservations now! Several of my friends found it easier and cheaper to fly into Los Vegas, stay there a couple of nights and drive (about 4 hours) over to LA for the game. Hotels are definitely cheaper in Vegas and right now you should be able to find flights. We ended up going through with our Alumni Association and stayed in a great hotel in LA but it was over priced like all Alumni tours.
Two years ago the face value for the ticket was $185 which was almost exactly what I paid for the entire trip (plane, hotel and parade transportation ($190)) as a student back in 1965. Make the trip, it's worth it!
