Rugamba makes it official - he's transferring

Sounds like a wise decision that should benefit Manny as well as the Hawkeye team he leaves behind by opening another scholarship. Best of luck to everyone.

Bummer... hate to lose experienced players with skill. Even if 2017 wasn't his best effort, and he wasn't expected to start going into fall camp, things can change on a dime. Good luck to Manny... but better luck to our CB's in '18!

Do you think Stone will play some CB?

I don't see it, but no one knows at this point. Iowa has Hooker, Snyder, Gervase and Stone at safety. It's a good position to be in. Snyder is coming off two ACL injuries. I know he's a full go at this point, but I don't know how anyone can write down 12 starts 100% certain for him this year. I like Stone's abilities playing the ball, but think Iowa has a lot of good options at corner. Hankins, Ojemudia, Creamer, and the freshmen coming in this year give Iowa a lot of good athletes at corner. Stone is in position to reasonable be a 2-year starter at safety, Gervase and Snyder are seniors. If Hooker had a huge year, he could be NFL bound. But that is a big if.

Good luck to Manny. Good player for the Hawks, and helped them get one from Mich.

Stone is a safety all the way. We have OJ and Hankins as guys who have quality experience ... and we have a whole plethora of guys who could emerge (Creamer, Johnson, Roberts, or Brents). Experienced depth may end up being an issue at CB ... however, I don't anticipate that talent will be an issue.

Besides, I anticipate that Phil will likely lean heavily upon or safeties when using sub-packages.

Josh Turner not on your list???

Boswell wasn't on my list either. We'll have to see how those guys develop. Creamer has allegedly been "on the rise" ... Roberts was a protege of Jovon Johnson ... and Johnson and Brents were pretty highly sought-after guys from the Indianapolis area. I've heard that Turner has talent ... but that he's pretty raw. As for Boswell, I don't know yet what to make about him. He's supposed to have some legit speed - and he's gotten his name of the depth chart a few times ... but I haven't heard much else about him.

Cedric Boswell is no longer on the team officially left in early June.

Too bad Manny did put things together and make use of his potential. I hope OJ does because he could. Not sure he has the mentality or drive for it right now. I know some of the newcomers are ready to push for time.

Josh Jackson played well in spot duty as a sophomore and blossomed into an All-American as a junior. Manny played very little the last few games of the year and I believe he saw the roster did not look good for his playing time. I wish him well wherever he winds up, but I don't think his leaving makes much difference in Iowa's prospects the next two years.

Check out @marcmorehouse’s Tweet:

I've seen both Morehouse and Dochterman tweet about this today. I think Phil's comment about Manny was in regards to last season and they are taking it out of context. This is what he actually said........

Q. Seemed like Manny had a pretty up-and-down year last year. Do you agree with that, and how has he kind of responded this spring?
PHIL PARKER: I think it’s a challenge as a true freshman to come in and play against Michigan and having a great year, and a lot of people patting you on the back, and I think maybe he might have lost his focus a little bit, not as detailed, maybe not as much of a time commitment. I’m not really sure. But you’re right, up and down a little bit. But I thought for this spring, at times I think he’s been really good, and he’s working his tail off.

His job is to go ahead and prove that he’s a starter, and obviously he’s a starter at nickel, but he wants to be a starter in regular base defense.

What that tells me is that he was #3 during the spring. It also tells me that Phil was speculating about why Manny had a bit of a dip in performance in '17 .... inferences that we could probably make are that:
  • Phil probably guessed that Manny may not have spent as much time prepping as he should have. That links to the time-commitment comment.
  • Phil probably also guessed that Manny may not have been as detail oriented as he should have been when working and prepping ... consequently, he didn't make the improvements he should have.
  • Lastly, Phil probably attributed the above issues to Manny being a little immature and getting caught up with all the hype that surrounded the successes of his true freshman campaign. Sometimes players get a little bit of an entitled vibe and think that they can own the starting spot solely based on their past achievements. This is exactly what happened with Jerminic Smith going from the '15 season to the '16 season.
I agree that, as a general rule, you don't want to lose talented and experienced players from your roster. However, if a guy isn't happy and if that guys isn't setting himself up to be a positive and productive member of the team ... then it's probably better that such guys excise themselves from the program.

If Manny was moving up the ladder and making a better push for the #2 CB spot ... then he'd probably have remained on the squad. However, given his departure ... my guess is that he was still probably, at best, a #3 ... and he was probably catching himself looking over his shoulder at all the young guys who just entered the program.

Given how Phil seemed to be recruiting CBs over the past 2 years ... it suggests to me that he was probably expecting some of the attrition we ended up seeing.

How quick you guys forget as a true freshman manny beat out a future all American..
It appears that the difference was Jackson’s unmatched work ethic and time commitment. Even now I’m Green Bay, I’ve seen a couple things discussing his dedication to film and constant improvement.

Seems like a classic case of hard work beating talent when talent doesn’t work hard and a microcosm of what the Iowa program is all about and strives to be.
