The Russian government has proposed a giant, 12,910 mile roadway to be connected, linking New York City and London and effectively uniting most of the countries of the world by land.

Proposed by Russian Railways head Vladimir Yakunin, the roadway would contain some already built roads but would also consist of a large building project that could cost as much as $3 trillion. Despite the cost, the popularity and the connection Yakunin has with Vladimir Putin could make it a reality. The roads would be laid along side the Trans-Siberian Railway—the longest railway in the world.

There would be a span of 55 miles linking mainland Russia and Alaska. There is also about 520 miles of wilderness between the closest Alaskan settlement to Russia—Nome—from the nearest major city, Fairbanks.

There is also talk of the construction of a high speed rail system along-side the road.

In a pre global warming world this would actually be a pretty neat idea. Now if you could cover it with solar panels and restrict it to electric vehicles, maybe it still could be.

I'd hate to drive that, but I am really excited about riding the Trans-Manchurian Railway sometime.

Man, it's been a long time since I've looked closely at a map. I knew Russia was large, but that is hilarious.

Russia, east to west, is 5700 miles, and 11 time zones lol. How much crazy shit must go on in their Appalachian type areas?
Inbreeding. The number one cause of bigfoot.

Has anyone watched any Russian youtube driving videos? Yeah,I'm gonna tool on over to Vladivostok and party.
I don't think them crazy Russians know about traffic signals.

Could it be done - sure. Is there a reason to do it - not really.

Maybe Russia is looking for some shovel ready jobs?

Can I ask why you want life to suck? Everything you propose actually makes life WORSE for almost everyone. Liberals seem to have an obsession with making life miserable for everyone. Electric Cars? What moron would want one here in Iowa.

When I first read London to New York I pictured it going across a really long bridge over the Atlantic. This seems much more doable.
Actually, there are proposals to have a tunnel floating several hundred feet under the atlantic for superfast trains. Others for linking by land as well. China wants to run its supertrains across the Berring Strait as well.

Wasn't is Squiggy decades ago when on the Dating Game, that had the goal of building a bridge from the US to Japan?

I don't get the point of a road linking NYC to London. There wouldn't be an economic benefit as far as I can tell. A rail link might make some sense in that it could ship large quantities of items cheaply, but, I doubt it would be cheaper than by ship.

That's a lot of gas stations along the way.

My thinking is that's a good landing spot for all that Russian oil that are drying up as far as end users given that the world is becoming more efficient. As well as enabling Russian exports getting to new markets, maybe because they don't have the shipping infrastructiure to help that along.

Let alone putting a lot of Russians to work.

But I could be wrong.

Clearly Russia would benefit. Especially if they could get international support.

I haven't seen the projections but I have to wonder if a lot of the interior of Russia might not be among the early climate change winners. So if those currently less hospitable areas can get good transportation linkage, that could be a boon to development.

If I were Putin and actually serious about this, I would probably offer to trade massive refugee relocation in exchange for aid on this project. Put a million+ refugees in these underpopulated regions and put them to work taming the land and building the infrastructure, using western money. Everybody wins.

The New York to Fairbanks segment would become hugely popular. That is a road trip i have always dreamed of taking. As for the trade side of it- just drop about 6-7 arteries off the arm out out of Fairbanks and run them to L.A, SF, Chicago, Houston etc. Just make the state of Nebraska one gigantic central warehouse.

A thousand mile stretch 8 lanes wide with practically zero traffic on it with no speed limit sounds enticing.

No one sees this as a pre-cursor to an eventual overland invasion of the U.S., primarily by tank?

That was my first thought as well. The Putinites and their T90s will be driving down from Canada. We will need to equip the Mounties with TOW missiles!
