Russian exceptionalism

OK, my general policy is to ignore Tucker in his entirety, and most of the posts relating to him.

But ... WITAF?!

I've been to Moscow. It is clean (mostly because there's a historic practice of babushkas who will excoriate you if you throw trash around or don't have your shirt tucked in). And the historic era is indeed beautiful (mainly because it's of a style that you really can't see anywhere else in the world). And the metro stations are certainly more interesting than ours.

But it's a dump. Notwithstanding our current penchant for adopting brutalist home design principles here in the US, it really doesn't work that well for large tracts of 3000 unit apartment buildings, as long and as far as the eye can see. A. Dump.

Man, they must really be sending him the good hookers and blow. Which is also a Russian thing.

Hey Tucker now visit the rest of that shit hole country. Similar to North Korea outside of the Capital it’s not so livable.
yeah, the concept of "The Center" is a very real thing in Russia. Unfortunately, it's becoming a thing here too.

What a ****ing tool that guy is. I spent 3 weeks in Russia, including Moscow and in a mining/industrial region called Kemerovo in southern Siberia. It was back in 2002/2003. Moscow was a nice city with a very European feel to it. They poured everything into the city in order to impress visitors and attract Western investment. The moment you left Moscow (or St Petersburg for that matter) you entered a third world country. Buildings were crumbling everywhere. Barely working water and sanitation systems filled with giardia. There were high rise tenements everywhere with multiple families sharing one and two bedroom apartments. In our hotel while we were eating breakfast there were groups of men sitting at tables pouring down bottles of Vodka. It was paradise really.

There are some countries that I would never visit, if for no reason other than I was a US serviceman. Russia is top of the list. Plus, there is nothing there that really intrigues me.
I get the military sentiment (and of course there are some us persons like my buddy who really can't go back there any more).

But it is a fascinating place, from the Russian-ness of Moscow, to the openness of the steppes (which practically make Iowa like West Virginia in its ruggedness), to Baikal, and to the beauty of walking through petersburg during white nights. As it happens, this weekend i found my travel journal from the months i spent there, and the thing that comes through is that, like here, 95% of the people are just living their lives and are perfectly agreeable. One of the great sorrows of my life is that I think it's highly unlikely that conditions there will change enough that I'd think of going back for a visit. And that's saying something given how the place used to be run.

Any of the people that have volunteered to help libs pack and move out of iowa want to extend the offer to Tucker to assist in his move to russia?

Totally agree regarding the people. Met wonderful welcoming people who back then weren't the least bit hostile towards Americans. I haven't communicated with any of them in many years but I wonder if that same attitude prevails today. My kids were both born in Russia and it is my hope that someday they will be able to return to see where they came from.

chicago's architecturally interesting, but I'd hardly call it pretty.
Chicago is a beautiful and very clean city. Anybody claiming otherwise hasn't spent a whole lot of time there. If you ever have the time, come out in the summer and take in a lakefront festival and a boat trip on the Chicago River for an architectural tour. It's spectacular.

And it also has dumpy dangerous parts like any city on earth will millions of people and high population density.

Tucker is a moron because he’s obviously only been shown selectively chosen areas.
