I could care less about them as a team, but being that they are recently in the Big 10 I am crossing my fingers they take some top recruits from Penn State and Ohio State. I am surprised by their performance today.
I, and others seated near me, thought that Rutgers, with their east coast position could be an up and coming team in the future. They had a champ in Ashnault and many placers and looked fairly good on the mat too.
Top 5 at the B1G tournament, having an individual champ and putting up over 100 points is nothing to scoff at. Finishing ahead of Michigan/Illinois/Minnesota/Wisconsin.
1. Penn State 150.5
2. Iowa 127.0
3. Ohio State 126.0
4. Nebraska 117.0
5. Rutgers 106.5
Saw Anthony Ashnault crushing Mondo's brunch this morning after 11am weigh-ins. Thought it was hilarious considering how much my fat ass ate. I won't have to eat for days.
Really glad his plan worked for him and he won. It made for some great jokes and entertainment during the 141 pound matches.
They have certainly taken advantage of their big opportunity that came with joining the Big 10. I have a feeling that they will become a fixture in the top 5 of the conference. NJ high school wrestling talent is some of the best in the country and their proximity to Pennsylvania and NY state put them in a great spot for future recruiting. If they can add a big name or two to their coaching staff, they can be a consistent player on the national scene.
Agree with the above. They definitely caught our attention. Could do without the theatrics of one or two of their guys, but they wrestled a great tournament. Would have been nice if they'd kept Suriano in-state, but hopefully they'll put a dent in Cael's recruiting haul in the near future.
