Early Kenpom projections show this one will be somewhere in the vicinity of a pick em. SP still unsure of the status of Ron Harper Jr. Should be a dandy but I’d rather not have it come down to a Joe W banked 3 from behind the basket.

Personally I’m happy if the hawks win one of their next two games. I think they go on a win streak after that!

Harper didn't have a boot on so I'm thinking we will see him on Saturday...

Harper will play,..This might be the toughest match up left on the schedule...

Huge game for both teams. If Harper doesn't, play or is significantly hampered, Iowa should be in a good spot. Rutgers beat Purdue without him but Iowa is a different story and Mathis went 5-5 from 3 and Mulcahy hit 3 as well which is unlikely to repeat.

Some fun matchups to watch will be Garza vs Myles. Arguably the best offensive post player vs arguably the best defensive post player.

Joe T vs Young. 2 very quick and explosive tough guards who can get to the basket. Young is coming off a scary fall on a cheap foul in the OSU game and was not 100% last game and clearly in pain. He may be the quickest guard in the country and has added a different dimension to Rutgers this season with his ability to penetrate to both score and dish. I hear Joe T hurt his ankle but will be fine. Should be a fun matchup

Harper vs Weiskamp - does he have the muscle to bang with Harper around the rim at 6'6 240?

Should Rutgers expect to see a lot of zone? Bohannon will not be able to guard Young man to man

It will be an interesting game. Rutgers is very good. They are making nearly 40% of their 3's this year. Harper has been extremely good from deep, hitting 50% on a lot of 3's. Rutgers coach has done such a tremendous job of building his roster.

IMO not a good matchup for the Hawks. Really good perimeter players and Johnson is tough defensively inside. Iowa will have to play very well to pull out a win.

Wow, didn't know that Jimmy V was a Rutgers alum.

Rutgers is definitely a strong team this year. Iowa better hope they don't get hot from 3-point land, otherwise they'll be in trouble.

Shit, might as well tell Fran that we should not even get on the plane. It doesnt sound like Iowa has a chance on Saturday.

Hopefully a fun, high scoring affair.
Iowa wins and gets a nice boost to a top 3 finish in the league. A loss would hurt, but not devastating. Of course, there would be the post game losing of one's sh!t fest that some people go for here if they don't win. But that comes with the territory.

Myles Johnson might be a great defensive center, but Trevion Williams pretty much had his way against him going 21 and 12. Hopefully, Luka can do as well or better.
This is true . Myles is a great defensive center but he has been neutered by the refs . With Cliff out too , he has been less aggressive because he’s scared to get in foul trouble . If you watch the Ohio state game that he played 12 minutes and fouled out you will see what I mean . That game was extreme, but over the last few years he hasn’t gotten any respect from the refs and has been called for some of the worst fouls I’ve seen.
It must be nice to have a big man that is reffed the correct way. It’s either that , or Garza never fouls !

As long as Cliff Omoruyi is out, Myles isn't playing all-out defense. The way the refs called the Ohio State game had him on edge. Three of his foul against OSU were phantom calls. Besides, Rutgers, in the last few games against Purdue, hasn't focused on stopping Williams. Williams was able to get his points, but Rutgers stop their perimeter game (3pt), which has been the difference. Rutgers has won the last three games against Purdue.

That seemed to be the case last year. This year it seems the refs are not giving him the same calls. He's been in early foul trouble two or three times already this year, and that didn't happen last year. Hell thats why he leads the nation by a TON on offensive efficiency. Before their last game his points per 40 minutes was a ridiculous 47.6 points per 40 minutes played! That ISwho game he only played 17 minutes and scored 35 or something crazy like that.

Hopefully Rutgers thinks their good post defender can handle Garza without a double team and they game plan accordingly. It's just too tough to stop a great offensive player in the post without getting into foul trouble.

The blueprint for beating Iowa is clear. Double Garza and make them beat you with perimeter shots. If two out of JW, JB, and CJF hit shots, Iowa wins. If one hits shots, it's close. If none do, Iowa loses.

Rutgers probably plans for both.....Rutgers coach has a really good defensive big man. Maybe they start out guarding Garza one on one with some fakes towards a double so they don't give up open shooters....and if that isn't working they start doubling from different players.

They may start doubling to try and frustrate Luka or figure out if he can make the right pass, and then go away from it.....it all comes down to execution.

Garza is a great player, but he hasn't been making the pass out of the double to the weakside.
* If the one backside defender plays too low then the backside wing is open for 3.
* If the backside defender plays too high then the backside corner is open for 3.
* If the backside defender is in position to take away both passes, either the spacing is poor the backside wing needs to cut to the block or flash to the high post to score or make the backside defender commit.

It's easier to talk about than to execute because seeing and passing out of a good double team is tough, but it is pretty simple to isolate in a drill. It's pretty tough to criticize the #1 offense in the land, but if they can be more efficient in attacking the double team they could be operating at a crazy high level.

Rutgers alum, played basketball for Rutgers and was the MBB HC. The old basketball gym, located in what is referred to as the College Ave gym or "the barn" is dedicated to him and has his name on the court.

I looked it up and he was an assistant at RU in the late 60s.

I can't help but wonder if he could have made Rutgers a power, had things worked out a little differently.

I knew that, not sure why I put HC. We'll never know what could have been but we're pretty happy with what Pikiell has done since getting here.
Rutgers wasn't ready to be a power back then. The school hasn't been serious about athletics until recently. They were half serious starting 20 years ago. And fully serious about 1 year ago.

First team to 100 wins.

Iowa looks like a rural YMCA all-star team...with old man level athleticism (I’m 53 myself) where dunking is never even a thing, but they gettin’ buckets all day long.

Rutgers is a an interesting mix of talents who are now maturing and they continue to improve their outside shots. Most of the dudes could get away with just using raw energy and athleticism to get to the hoop while in high school (Jacob Young has Phi Slamma Jamma bloodlines) but being gym rats and getting coached up eventually pays dividends.
Myles Johnson didn’t start taking basketball seriously until he got to college as he’s a computer engineering guy but is beginning to dominate defensively and in rebounding.

Looking forward to a good game. Just wish RU didn't have so many injuries:

1. SG Geo Baker still recovering from a high ankle sprain suffered in game 1, though he looked close to his old self in the last game against Purdue.

2. 6-11, 240-pound, Top 50 freshman C Cliff Omoruyi (who was the starter for the first five games, to prevent Myles Johnson from getting in foul trouble early on) is OUT with a hyperextended/sprained knee.

3. PG Jacob Young suffered a deep hip/back bruise when he was slammed to the floor on a dribble drive two games ago against OSU, and he was wincing in pain during the Purdue game (though he still played 35 minutes).

4. Backup G/F Mawot Mag is recovering from an ankle sprain that caused him to miss a few games.

5. SF Ron Harper, Jr. is questionable with an ankle sprain suffered before the Purdue game.

6. G/F Caleb McConnell has been OUT all season with a back injury. The plan has been to redshirt him this year, though we are still hoping he can return, as he likely would have been our starting SF (or at least 6th man) had it not been for the injury.

If Harper can't go, I think you guys will win by 10-15 points, as I just can't see RU going 11-21 again from 3-pt range like we did against Purdue, without Harper. Damn shame, as this could be an epic battle if Harper can go.

I'd say fully serious when Hobbs was hired as AD. That's when the fundraising started in earnest to make all the rest happen. Hiring Schiano back last December was when football got extra serious
