Rutgers

Shit, might as well tell Fran that we should not even get on the plane. It doesnt sound like Iowa has a chance on Saturday.

No one is saying Iowa doesn't have a chance. But Rutgers is quite a bit better than Minnesota, and Iowa lost to them on the road. I put the game as a pick-em. Rutgers actually plays defense, and their weakness from previous years, shooting, hasn't been a problem this year. Rutgers doesn't really have anyone who can guard Garza 1-1, no one in the Big 10 does. Frederick and Wieskamp are really good. But Rutgers is good, they are at home, and they have a good team that plays hard.

I remember being really impressed with Touissant last year and thought he'd grow into his sophomore year - but I see from his stat line that he hasn't been starting, and has been getting fewer minutes. Is he in a sophomore slump, or is he just being outplayed by people ahead of him in the rotation? Or is it just that Bohannon is back and taking up minutes he got last year?

Looking forward to this matchup, and hoping that Harper can go and isn't too hampered by his ankle. Was really hoping that our freshman center would be able to get some minutes against Garza just for the experience of playing against an elite big man, and give him a better idea of how much work he needs to put in during the offseason. Matching up against Cockburn was a learning experience for him, and was hoping Garza would be another - but that'll have to wait until February, I guess.

Hoping for a good game with no injuries.

JBo has taken a lot of minutes away from JT. JBo has been struggling with his shot outside of UNC and the most recent game vs NW, but Fran has stuck with him. JT has had some pretty good moments off the bench (closed the gap vs Gonzaga), but has had some of the same issues with TOs that plagued him last year and his shot still isn’t there. JT’s speed gives our team a completely different look when he’s out there though.

Looking forward to a good game. Just wish RU didn't have so many injuries:

1. SG Geo Baker still recovering from a high ankle sprain suffered in game 1, though he looked close to his old self in the last game against Purdue.

2. 6-11, 240-pound, Top 50 freshman C Cliff Omoruyi (who was the starter for the first five games, to prevent Myles Johnson from getting in foul trouble early on) is OUT with a hyperextended/sprained knee.

3. PG Jacob Young suffered a deep hip/back bruise when he was slammed to the floor on a dribble drive two games ago against OSU, and he was wincing in pain during the Purdue game (though he still played 35 minutes).

4. Backup G/F Mawot Mag is recovering from an ankle sprain that caused him to miss a few games.

5. SF Ron Harper, Jr. is questionable with an ankle sprain suffered before the Purdue game.

6. G/F Caleb McConnell has been OUT all season with a back injury. The plan has been to redshirt him this year, though we are still hoping he can return, as he likely would have been our starting SF (or at least 6th man) had it not been for the injury.

If Harper can't go, I think you guys will win by 10-15 points, as I just can't see RU going 11-21 again from 3-pt range like we did against Purdue, without Harper. Damn shame, as this could be an epic battle if Harper can go.
Purdue typically plays better Defense than Iowa though, so don't get your dobber down relative to some wide open 3's. You'll get plenty of looks I'm afraid.

Hopefully we just hit more of them.

Without doing any research I feel like every Rutgers game for Iowa has been close. Feel like they know how to play Iowa as well or better than anyone in our league.

Is Joe T. healthy though. Injured in the last game and didn’t play after that.

I'm more concerned about the five spot. If the refs continue to handcuff Myles, either in actual calls or the threat of calling a tight/terrible game, it could be a long day for us. We need an evenly called game to have a shot. A surprise appearance by Cliff O. would be great, but I won't hold my breath.

Iowa is pretty good at not getting foul calls. Partially because they don't try at defense (it seems).

Myles Johnson might be a great defensive center, but Trevion Williams pretty much had his way against him going 21 and 12. Hopefully, Luka can do as well or better.
Rutgers alum here. In order to remain on the court and avoid the horrible calls of the tOSU game, Myles Johnson played much less aggressively on defense against Purdue. Even BTN's Steven Bardo on his podcast said Rutgers , especially Myles Johnson, is getting shafted by the refs. He thought 2 possibly 3 of the calls against Johnson were not fouls.

I knew that, not sure why I put HC. We'll never know what could have been but we're pretty happy with what Pikiell has done since getting here.
He was the head coach of the freshman team, back in the days when freshman were not eligible to play immediately. So not quite the head coach of the program, but a head coach.

First team to 100 wins.

Iowa looks like a rural YMCA all-star team...with old man level athleticism (I’m 53 myself) where dunking is never even a thing, but they gettin’ buckets all day long.

Rutgers is a an interesting mix of talents who are now maturing and they continue to improve their outside shots. Most of the dudes could get away with just using raw energy and athleticism to get to the hoop while in high school (Jacob Young has Phi Slamma Jamma bloodlines) but being gym rats and getting coached up eventually pays dividends.
Myles Johnson didn’t start taking basketball seriously until he got to college as he’s a computer engineering guy but is beginning to dominate defensively and in rebounding.
Do you get extra points for dunking now? ;) Seriously, Iowa has plenty of guys who can dunk, but they'd rather drop that 3 bomb on ya, including our AA center......

I don't think he was injured in the game. He had a wrap on that leg when he first came in, but they never said anything specifically about what the issue was. If this slows him up that negates his one advantage, his ability to play fast. It would be nice if he can't go much if Fran would give Ulis the chance to step in, but not sure that will happen.

He was first injured on a dirty play by the Gophers. If you remember he went down in that game. Was limping a little and wrapped from the start of the NW game. Then he appeared to injury his ankle or foot in the NW game.

Normal season it would a tough call on Ulis RS vs. 1 or 2 game use. If nobody loses eligibility this season it might be a good idea to let Joe rest the leg rather than playing through the injury.

He most definitely did get hurt in the last game. Room himself out of the game. They even mentioned it during the game and showed him in the tunnel trying it out.

I understand that, but think the injury was previous to that game, hence the WRAP on his leg when he entered the game for the first time??? He has never worn anything like that before....

Just saying that Rutgers has a fairly diverse roster where you get elite athleticism at guard with explosively quick and bouncy J. Young and powerful and bouncy Montez Mathis. Then there’s guys like Myles Johnson and Paul Mulcahy, neither of whom will ever be more than 24 inches off the floor but they are both great at what they do well. Johnson defends the rim well while Mulcahy is a pass first oversized guard and both have great court awareness. R. Harper Jr. has practically doubled his three point shooting percentage from his freshman year while shooting them at double the clip.

Teams like Iowa are fun to watch because they can score the basketball with elite shooting across all positions. And, they allow buckets at the other end...

I've never seen a fan base proactively throw out the poor officiating excuse as much as RU fans.

Guess you missed Bardo's podcast where he rants about how the refs are screwing Rutgers over. And he has zero connections to Rutgers. This is just part of his rant.

I did not listen to this, but I hope he can add to it after the Ref's screw Rutgers over during the Iowa game. ;)

It will be a refreshing difference if the refs do screw over a team against us especially on their court.

Do Iowa fans think Garza gets away with everything? Or is that just every other B1G fan base?

Contact around the basket, constant moving screens, shuffling his pivot foot

Looking like Harper and (surprisingly) McConnell will both be available today, which has boosted some excitement on the Rutgers board. Also looking like Bo Boroski will be reffing, though, which subsequently dampened that enthusiasm.

Just finished watching on delay. Great game, though of course I wish it had gone the other way. 4-12 from the FT line just isn't going to cut it.

Glad McCaffery seemed to be okay enough to inbound the ball after that freak injury. See you guys again in February.

No, Garza has such GREAT footwork around the basket & does post moves that many big men can’t, so to those unfamiliar with his game, it looks like travel, but isn’t.

You forgot to add that Harper Jr is pudgy this year, but can still apparently bully his way to the hoop. I think u r seriously under estimating the athleticism of Iowa players. Wieskamp, Fredricks, Nunge, Murray dunk with ease. However, many times they prefer the easier layup without the show boating.

Ever notice that Garza almost always gets a bloody nose/cut lip/cuts over his eyes? He gets fouled EVERY time he touches the ball inside of 10 feet. He outworks every opposing center. And he has practiced all of this moves thousands of times just so he doesn't travel. Google him and look at the videos of his off-season training. There is a good reason he's one of the best.

He just looks that way. He is a big kid with huge hands and can really shoot it. He will be playing in the league someday.

It's more than he just looks that way. He's a good athlete and he is a big kid. He also needs to be in better shape if he wants to play in the NBA. His game would be much better and explosive if he shed some weight.

He's 6'6", 245 lbs. He is not small-boned like his father - he's a strong kid who can jump. Did you even watch the game?
