Rutgers

It is possible that Rutgers goes to the NCAA Tournament
and Iowa Hawkeyes do not. We still do not have a quality
win against the top ranked teams in Big Ten Conference.
Our opportunities remain against Ohio St., Michigan St.
and Illinois. Only the Spartans come to Iowa City.

Student section is SRO & I don't see an empty seat in the house. The Illinois AD & friends were at the Rutgers Club for dinner. I told them I hoped they had their earplugs with them
@MrsScrew Let's not forget Cato! He was a good dude and hilarious--the Meat Loaf comment had us laughing pretty good!

Iowa just beats who they are supposed to beat and they are comfortably in.

Watching that game last night I was struck by how many dumb turnovers Rutgers had and they still thumped the 1st place team in the B1G.

It was also strange listening to Jess Settles make glowing remarks about Illinois and how he thought they have a chance to win it all - while getting boat raced by RU.

And, one of RU's best players (Baker) was pretty much MIA the entire game.

Not to mention, the team with Cockburn in the middle got out rebounded by 18.

Strange game.

I am glad you pointed this out......cause, yeah, it was a strange game. I saw this too but as KF would say "that's basketball".....🤷‍♂️.....Rutgers is playing well now that's for sure and we still have a ways to go yet but I thought last year's team at 10-10 in the conference with Miles Johnson and with the core group playing still today was a better team......but I am poorly trained in Rutgers BB and don't really care too much either....

It also seems to me when these good teams play Rutgers....they play like friggin crap and with Cockburn and the Illini getting outrebounded by 18.....seriously? WTH....uhh....a bit of effort maybe? And our fans complain about stuff like this.... it happens.

And sorry, I am stilled pissed and will not get over that stupid call on Keegan....stuff like that too.

I will say and we've seen this happen to so many players at Iowa and around the conference, Paul Mulcahy has taken his game to levels I didn't think he could. He is a really nice player for Rutgers and a differentiator imo.....

But it is what happens when players get a few years of significant experience playing in the league...Rutgers has some quality Seniors and Juniors and they are playing well.

Early reports indicate the injury may be significant 😞

awaiting today's testing results but it's sounding like not "significant". Hopefully some Novocain and a little dirt will make it all better. It's his non-throwing hand, I would expect that nothing but death will keep him from playing on Sunday vs Purdue

When RU lost Johnson and that other good player to Oregon I thought there would fall off but their core group has stuck together and are showing how a mature group of vets can flourish with tough defense and some playmakers on offense.
NJ always has HS talent like top 50 Omuyri so Pickell has a shot at sustaining this success.

More proof that there is not a great team in the B1G this year. Lots of teams that can be great on any given night, but no consistency.
Seems to be a recurring theme in the B1G. Plenty of very good teams, some real star power, but no team that is truly dominant. Purdue beat NW last night by 6, after beating MD by 1 at home and getting thumped by Michigan by 24.

I'm not seeing a deep run by any B1G team, but who really knows?

Purdue looks a lot like Iowa from last year to me. Spectacular offense most nights but their defense isn't good on many. They have great post players and a lot of shooters. The one thing they do have that Iowa didn't was elite guard play from Ivey. Iowa had no one like him. I still wouldn't be surprised at all if they don't make it past the round of 16.

Yeah....good post and who really knows after last year's non-existent, disappointing run for the B1G and their high seeds too. Nine Big Ten teams secured NCAA tournament bids ...this stuff (results) doesn't bother me so much cause anything can happen in basketball and like you said, there are plenty of very good teams. One and done too.

There is a reason why they call it March Madness and I love the month.....it is my favorite one. 👍

Rutgers is now 75 in net. Quad1 loss currently need to win tonight even though it will be a Quad2. Since they started the net what is the lowest # taken? 75 seems out of range but holy cow they are hot right now!!!

This Illustrates that the net takes into account more so on bad losses than Good wins apparently.

Which is either a flaw in the system, a feature or something else depending on how you look at it.
Iowa appears to be maximizing results relative to the NET having no real good wins and no bad losses. RU is on the opposite end of that spectrum.
I would personally reward good wins more than penalize bad losses. In particularly I think they should have significantly reduced weighting as the season progresses. But if a team is going to be a beneficiary of a not so great rating system it might as well be the Hawks.

With the experience Rutgers had coming back and the emergence of some younger players they appear to be the team no one will want left on their schedule. Kudos to them for their continued improvement this season. They will be a tough out in the Tournament.

It also shows that it doesn't do what humans get so caught up in - which is looking at how they are playing right now. I like that the whole season matters. I think you can add some weight to improving as the season goes on...but you still have to count all the games the same.

Here’s the deal with the NET and Rutgers.

The dug themselves a pretty big analytics hole to start out the year.

Expected Outcome VS Actual Outcome

And as a subset:

Good wins+ Good Losses

Bad Wins+ Bad Losses

OE+DE

Using Kenpom’s numbers, and they ebb and flow close enough to NET to use as a visual, we can see where Rutgers stumbled, surged some, stumbled, and then surged.

They started out the year #67 on Kenpom.

First game against #313 Lehigh was a 3 point win. That’s analytically a bad loss. So they drop to #71.

The next couple of games were so-so wins, not necessarily bad but enough to drop to #73

The next stretch dug the real hole. Rutgers dropped from #73-#93 during a three game losing streak.

A good Clemson win followed by a very bad loss (EO vs AO) to Illinois dropped them another 5 spots to #98.

Some head way made against Purdue but that was erased by a DD loss to Seton Hall. Now Rutgers sits at #100.

A 16 point win against #354 Maine(Bad win EO VS AO) drops them to #105.

Rutgers makes up considerable ground during the next 3 wins. 2 near 30 point blowouts and a win against Michigan takes them to #87. Rutgers is on the rise….until they aren’t.

Rutgers stubs their analytics toe against PSU losing by 17 dropping them back to #95.

The next two wins against Maryland and Iowa don’t move the needle much(EO vs AO) but they do move to #93

Losing to Minnesota was “expected” but the loss at home to Maryland hurt. Rutgers drops back to #100. 1 step forward, one step back.

Another not great win (2 points) against Nebraska drops them further. The loss at NW didn’t do much but here we are at #104

All of a sudden Rutgers comes alive. The 21 point MSU win(EO vs AO) vaults Rutgers from #104 to #88. A good OSU win moved them to #85. Beating Wisconsin on the road was another huge analytics win. Rutgers now sits at #75. Blowing out Illinois at home moves them all the way to #68

Ans of course none of this happens on a vacuum. Other teams are moving and shaking as well. But, as illustrated, the early games really killed this team. The committee is aware of the injury situation so I’m sure that will be taken into account. But that sort of thing isn’t baked into what we see in the NET

I hope that helped with some of the confusion.

Just about any team in the country is bound to pick up 2-3 more L’s than any other conference. The B1G may not have a “killer” team like Gonzaga, but it’s a yearly grind.
