Ruth to Illanoy

Iowa needs these type of guys on the staff ... Hawkeyes or HWC. I am making no bad comments about any current staff members, but guys like Ruth raise the bar for a program. Iowa needs guys like this - there is no substitute for elite training partners. That includes teammates and coaches. The Hawkeyes have to find an absolute stud upper weight to add the mix. Cox would be the dream, but there are others.

Here’s one way to help make that happen https://donorbox.org/hawkeye-wrestling-club-inner-circle

Meh. You say that but Iowa just won NCAAs and Ed Ruth has been out of wrestling since what? 2015? I’ll pass. Plus having extremely long arms with which to cradle people is something you can’t teach.

Not saying Ruth specifically. But it seems rather odd to dismiss a 3-time NC. You don't win 3 titles just because you have long arms. ... Having a guy that might be a little fresh and ready to roll doesn't exactly seem like a detriment. And, hasn't he been involved in MMA - doesn't seem like he's been sitting on his couch. So, if Spencer takes 5-6 years off to focus on things - health, family, job or whatever - and then comes back to coach, would you care he wasn't involved specifically in wrestling for a few years - I can't imagine.

Where has he been coaching and which wrestlers has he impacted?
Simply saying someone with his credentials is certainly appealing. I can't imagine any program would be upset with adding a former 3x NC. Doesn't everyone have to start somewhere?

I get it. And if it were coming off his college success, even with the character issues (Taco Bell drunk at 2am) I would be more receptive to Ruth. But if you’re gonna add someone from PSU now I’d only look at Nolf or Zain.

Lets not overlook the mental aspect of the sport. Say what you want, but PSU has something going on in the mental aspect of the sport. What are they, something like 25 for 25 in NCAA semifinal matches? They are doing something besides recruiting to have the results they are having.

Whatever Cael has figured out is worth knowing. Gable brought something totally different to the wrestling world and at a level that it changed the sport. Look at how many Gable proteges are coaching and have coached. You will probably start to see that with Cael and his guys soon.

On the same page ... definitely want the complete package. Not saying Ruth would be my choice, just saying it's an impressive piece to add to a coaching staff. Nolf or Zain, absolutely. That dominate type athlete just can't be replicated.

Don't think I've seen such a massive oversimplification of somebody's wrestling. Ruth wasn't even a big cradler once he bumped to 184. He just took people down whenever he wanted and made it look effortless. "Long arms." Lol, he's an all-time great.

One of my pet peeves are people who belittle Ruth as merely being a physical freak. Ask any of his coaches or teammates at Penn State. He put in a hell of a lot of hard work to make things look that easy.

And seems like he was never really given his due during that time period. Than again, not many can be away from the sport for years and walk into a B1G D-1 assistant's job.

So what character issue does he have then? Got drunk and drove? Thank goodness no one got hurt, but I doubt he's a bad guy because of it.
Was just clarifying that there was a difference between his event and a typical Taco Bell trip. It was awhile ago and I have never known the guy.

10000%, world level training partner also would be huge for upper weight recruits.

Good catch by Poeta. Can Ed Ruth wrestle? You betcha. Can Ed Ruth coach? We will see. Can Ed Ruth recruit? We will see. A great pedigree, Pennsylvania (P.S.U.) and New Jersey (Blair Academy).

The University of Illinois is a tough place to recruit.

Slow news day, maybe a perspective. Raised in Iowa, long time living in Chicago. Guess that makes me amphibious. University of Iowa athletic stuff is pervasive throughout Chicagoland; Iowa alumni stickers, Tiger Hawk stickers, Hawkeye wrestling gear, t-shirts, hoodies, sweat gear, etc. Whenever I speak with parents who have children attending the University of Iowa they always (to the person!) tell me what a great school the University of Iowa is, what a great community Iowa City is, what a great time they have when they visit their children at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. And how proud they are to have their children attend the University of Iowa. Superlatives always. Well maybe not so much about the cornfields, that’s probably an acquired taste.

Infrequently hear the same comments about the University of Illinois, Champaign.

Campbell is tough place to recruit to also, but Kolat made it work. I would also say that Stillwater is tough place to recruit to, but they sure put our some good teams. The right guy can get it done. Iowa State is tough place to recruit now, but it wasn't 40 years ago.

I think Poeta can talk people into coming and they will be a formidable team in the coming years. Will they be a NCAA title threat - who knows? If they can get some Illinois pride going like Mark Johnson was able to do when he first got there, then the sky is the limit.

One thing you do hear a lot about is how good of a school U of I is and how much a degree is worth from there. It has its positives.

Good insight, all persuasive points. The University of Illinois wrestling program must successfully compete for east coast athletes-wrestlers for the program to indeed advance. Ed Ruth’s future role as coach-recruiter would seem crucial to this success. Ed Ruth is an east coast kind-of-guy.

Understandably I’m preaching to the choir here, but every successful wrestling program recruits east of the Mississippi Flyway. The University of Iowa has always been an active recruiter in the east, as University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Penn State, Cornell, North Carolina State, Edinboro, and Appalachian State. Did I leave anyone off this list?

Point being, there is always one-heck of a lot of quality competition for the elite, and the exceptional high school wrestler. Ed Ruth’s employment would seem clearly defined for him.

Are you doing alright? This might be the most cohesive post you've ever had.

FYI - Ed Ruth has been coaching at the NC State RTC since late last year, so he has been involved with wrestling and wrestling coaching recently. As a second assistant this is a great hire from my view, they have the super vet coach in Hunter to lead the recruiting charge.

For the record I think this is a good hire by Illinois. My point is he’s not high profile enough anymore for a top top tier program like an Iowa to take a flyer on.

The bigger question is what’s taking so long to announce Nolf to Stanford…

Wuuuh? Judging by our upper weight coaches this would be a huge upgrade. Only drawback is he’s not a former hawk. Multiple time AA to 3 time champ big leap in talent.

You’re assuming he’s at that caliber right now, you’re also assuming he’s a good coach and a good fit for our program. On the first I’m assuming he’s not. On the last 2 nobody knows. Like I said a team like Illinois should take a flyer on him and it’s a good hire. There are some upper weights behind the scenes in the room that are underrated by everyone and also very beneficial to the team.

Noted, don’t disagree completely. Who would you rate as our top upperweight coach? Curious.

And Morningstar was? I am guessing Poeta knows something about Ruth and has checked him out.

This might be the dumbest take yet.. You are comparing M* to Edward Ruth. M* was hired at Wisconsin as an assistant by Barry Davis and there was lots of buzz about his ability to recruit/coach that’s what ultimately helped him return to Iowa. Which one would you rather have come sit down in your living room and recruit your son. I’m pretty sure I know who your wife or boyfriend would choose.
